It should have a SO-239 connector on the back, Universal Radio lists it as "SO-239" connector... Check this page: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/parts/so2adapt.html That lists just about all (common) SO239/PL259 connectors and adapters
Newtonian 453 Posted September 6, 2015 BTW, now that I've abandoned all hope of ever seeing my Yaesu VX-8DR again I have a couple of things to sell: 1. original antenna + 6m extender ($20 value) 2. original battery ($40) 3. manual/user's guide 4. Glossy fold-out quick guide and pocket guide -- indispensible ($25) 5. Programming software and cable ($60) 6. Original wall charger (???) The VX-8DR was/is a great radio. Check out the reviews on eham.net. If you have $300 burning a hole in your pocket you could do a lot worse. Everything I'm offering is very lightly used or not used at all. It all looks new. If anyone wants these check the retail prices (the figures above are off the top of my head) and make me an offer for everything. I can't be bothered selling this piecemeal. Check this page: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/parts/so2adapt.html That lists just about all (common) SO239/PL259 connectors and adapters thanks man. took a closer look at it today. it's an adapter. the end screwed onto the radio looks like a standard cb type plug, while the end that the antenna jack goes into is a female bnc. ug255 looks like the male version of that. on the plus side....there's the magnetic base, with a ferule and nut. the guy that gave it to me said i just need to install a piece of wire of the right length? to have a good antenna? he rattled off a formula, but i don't remember it, lolol
tinman22 0 Posted September 7, 2015 1/2 wave dipole (feet) = 468 / frequency in Mhz. (1/4 wave, use 234 / frequency in Mhz)
1LtCAP 4,264 Posted September 7, 2015 this radio's 2 meter only? .....
tinman22 0 Posted September 7, 2015 Yup. 2m only. And I think only 10 or 20 memory spots.
1LtCAP 4,264 Posted September 7, 2015 so what do i do to use that formula? pick a frequency in the middle of the range, plug it in, and i got my necessary antenna length for the radio?
Carcano 14 Posted September 7, 2015 so what do i do to use that formula? pick a frequency in the middle of the range, plug it in, and i got my necessary antenna length for the radio? Cap, I would just get the connector and use an Arrow Antenna J-Pole and put it on the roof...
Carcano 14 Posted September 7, 2015 http://www.arrowantennas.com/osj/j-pole.html I have one I bought several years ago, it has withstood several storms and is still in good working order. These are machined elements and will last many years if installed correctly. The only issue is every 2-3 years I need to tighten the elements...I've often wondered how thread locker would work on these but haven't tried it. W2MC 1,699 Posted September 8, 2015 A 2 meter j pole is easy to make out of 1/2 inch copper pipe. http://www.qsl.net/kg4bin/2jpole.gif
1LtCAP 4,264 Posted September 8, 2015 now i'm feeling stupid...that doesn't look roof mountable? i thought i needed to keep the antenna as close to center of the roof of the truck as i could?
tinman22 0 Posted September 8, 2015 Perhaps a diamond or comet mag mount would fit the bill. Of you have a mount and cable already you canrobably get a whip and load to fit and be on your way
Carcano 14 Posted September 8, 2015 now i'm feeling stupid...that doesn't look roof mountable? i thought i needed to keep the antenna as close to center of the roof of the truck as i could? Oh, your mounting it on the car... In that case, a mag mount should work. I have an NMO mount on my truck, if you are not looking to drill into the cab roof the mag mount is a much better option. The J-pole really sin't car mountable...those are great for base/home use..
tinman22 0 Posted September 8, 2015 If you post up a picture of the mag mount you have we might be able to point you I the direction for an antenna that would fit the base. Could probably get an antenna for less than $

W2MC 1,699 Posted September 9, 2015 didnt know you wanted something for the car.....thought we were talking J-Poles. It CAN be done, but there are much better choices available

Use a channel with little/no activity between the mobile and base you shouldn't have to put up with too much of that. Most of the foul mouth talk seems to stay under channel 26-28 and most is on AM not SSB (LSB/USB). I'm glad you didn't leave channel 6 on in the shop!!! 19 can be bad but on 6 a sailor can't compete...
