Range 14 and self healing targets

Recommended Posts

May be a long shot but i would figure i would ask. Are these allowed on the rifle and or pistol range?

if so, is there a:
    * Size limitation
*do they have to be close to the ground, or is the 5ft height limit of the regular targets apply?
    * saw a thread stating nothing resembling a human, is a silhouette ok?

i was thinking about something like these:

My Idea was to have 3 or 4 of them stringed up around 4ft high~30 yards away (practice for rimfire games), The string would be between 2 pieces of wood, so no metal used

if those aren't ok, can i use self healing Gongs in the fashion above?

I would call them up directly and ask.  I had some self-healing plastic/rubber toys I would shoot, but they stopped allowing toys on the range... I recall seeing someone shoot a mannequin before, but I'm not sure if they stopped that or not...

Every time I've been there in the past three years there is always someone with those orange targets.  The only thing the RO's have said about them is to move them out to 25 yards.  It was pistol shooters that had them too close.

Basically, they don't want anything that would leave behind bits of garbage, glass, wood splinters, be dangerous, toxic or be construed as a human target.  The list of vorboten targets is pretty clear.  If it's not on that list, then it should be okay.

I seem to recall ballistics gel was not allowed but I don't see that on the forbidden list anymore.  I wonder what that's all about.

I've shot these before and nobody said anything.

They didn't move much when shooting 556 at 50 or 100. I thought I was missing until I went up and saw the marks.

They sell them, including the bouncy ones.

I double checked that I could bring my own.

As said earlier, 25 yards minimum for ground targets.

I guess my concern is i wanted to hang them so they would be about 4 feet off the ground. somewhere between 25 and 50 yards out. I have only seen then set low, so my concern was if it was a rule or not

14. Paper targets, plastic jugs, tin cans, plywood targets (no more than 1/8 of an inch thick), and clay targets, are acceptable targets. Above ground targets must be a minimum of 15 yards and all ground targets 25 yards.

I have a question or two about shooting pistol at Range-14. As I read the above, it sounds like the closest you can set up is 15 yards (and must be above ground). And ground targets are OK at 25 yrs (no metal). What is needed to hang paper targets, let's say at 15 or 20 yards? Do I have to make some kind of support - what's typically used? Thanks.

You can buy targets there. They are just a wooden post with cardboard. You can make your own. I've also seen yard signs, and similar types.

Yeah, not much to it. The soil there is loose sand, for the most part. They give you a post hole digger if you need it (i bring a little folding shovel for camping etc) and you just dig a hole about 8-12" or so and stick the wood right in there and bury it. The targets are like a piece of 1x3 with pieces of cardboard stapled on. Few different designs, some have targets printed on, some have a bad guy, etc. Just be sure to bury it deep enough, gets windy out there and ive had em fall over etc. Before... the targets are 3$ each. Hardly worth building your own unless you make a ton at a time like they do.

Saw people make a stand out of pvc pipes as well. That was cool.

My suggestion is to put your paper targets offset. I always put mine centered not thinking about it and kept shooting the wood til it splintered and the target became worthless. Generally by then the cardboard was all flabby and destroyed anyways, but the other day i realized i should put the bullseye the other way off to the side so it doesnt destroy the post, haha.

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
