JW_Pepper 10 Posted December 16, 2016 I have an AR that's been sitting with the FFL I use for over a month. I have been waiting for him to pin and weld a muzzle brake onto the barrel. I keep asking for updates on when it will be done and he won't give me a date. I'm pretty fed up dealing with him at this point and want to move the rifle to another shop and have them do the compliance. Can I do this without running into complications? 302w 83 Posted December 16, 2016 Does he have the lower? Take the upper only.. it is yours. Bring it to another shop. Then take the lower.
JW_Pepper 10 Posted December 16, 2016 Does he have the lower? Take the upper only.. it is yours. Bring it to another shop. Then take the lower. Thanks for the reply. Yes, I had a complete rifle shipped to him and he has not transferred the lower to me yet. It sounds like I can just ask for the upper and then make a second trip back to have the lower transferred.
fatty 241 Posted December 16, 2016 let us know who this FFL is so we know not to use him for that type of work

The upper is a brick.

JW_Pepper 10 Posted January 5, 2017 let us know who this FFL is so we know not to use him for that type of work Precision Firearms and Coatings in Edison, NJ. Good price for transfers if you can tolerate the service but would not recommend for any compliance or gunsmithing type work.
fishnut 2,358 Posted January 5, 2017 So how did you make out OP? He do the work or did you have to take it elce ware?
ogfarmer 138 Posted January 5, 2017 FYI, Tier 1 Defense in Mountainside does pin/weld while you wait. You wont even have time to find something on tv and its done nicely
JW_Pepper 10 Posted January 6, 2017 So how did you make out OP? He do the work or did you have to take it elce ware? After I asked him for the upper, he suddenly became super responsive and said he would have it done that week. I reluctantly agreed. Later when I call him to arrange a time to pickup, he tells me that the brake I wanted to use (YHM) was hardened steel and that he couldn't drill into in. Instead, he decided to directly spot weld it onto the barrel itself without so much as consulting me first to see if I would be ok with it. The weld, although on the bottom looks like hell. I was not at all pleased with the experience. FYI, Tier 1 Defense in Mountainside does pin/weld while you wait. Looking for a new FFL.

They transfer for about 53 bucks total + compliance work? What did you pay to have a bad experience? Mike and his partner are no hacks, real craftsman, their work is like art. Paying them an additional couple bucks on the transfer probably would've gotten you your rifle sooner and done properly.

Sota 1,191 Posted January 8, 2017 be amazed what a couple good files and some cold blue can do to fix a bugger job.
remixer 1,645 Posted January 10, 2017 YHM is not hardened steel. It can be drilled with any standard steel bit.
