Shooting some 9mm's

Greetings,

 

Was able to get to the Bullet Hole in Belleville, NJ w/ the wife on Sat. to do some shooting and break in the new G19 that I picked up. Also brought along a 2nd gen G17 w/ night sights & trigger job and a 1995 Sig P226 ( the last year of the German made P226's).

 

My wife is a fan of the Sig and not so big a fan of the Glocks in general. I also have a 2nd gen G19 that I practice w/ daily for dry firing excercises. This gun has Trijicon night sights and can be shot very accurately. My wife has been willing to entertain the idea of a Glock since she's getting a little, more familiar w/ them through dry fire practice time.

 

The new G19 wasn't as accurate as I'd like, mostly due to the trigger still being a little crunchy (it's new after all) and the horrible stock sights (will be changing to something else in the near future). Was pulling 15 yard 5 round groups of about 3" or so. W/ the 2nd gen G19 (that's very broken in), I can do under 2" on average at 15 yards slowfire. The G17 shoots very accurately and was able to shoot 5 round strings of under 2" at 15 yards. I haven't shot the P226 in a while and forgot how good that gun is. My 1st couple of groups that I shot w/ the P226 were hovering somewhere around 1" or so. My wife tends to shoot the best w/ the Sig as well. She is nowhere as "into it" as I am, but she was hitting COM w/ spreads of about 5" or so. Surprisingly, I found the recoil of the G17 to be less than the P226.

 

I did take a full mag on the G19 and was shooting roughly 2 shots per second. All 15 rounds went into about 5" at 15 yards. Wish the range would allow rapid fire practice. As it was, the range officer asked me to slow down my speed. I really like the G19. It is a lot of firepower in a really efficient package. It's pretty easy to stay on target with faster shooting. I wasn't sure if I'd like the 3rd gen finger grooves over the finger grooveless grip frame of the 2nd gen's, but I've grown to really like it. They fit my hand well. I've shot the G17/22 frames w/ the finger grooves and didn't like it as well. The spacing on the finger grooves on the full size guns don't fit me as well. Will be doing some work on the trigger to get it smooth and changing out the sights. The only other guns that I really like in this size class are the Sig P228 and HK USP9C. The range had a couple of used P228's that I may be looking into.... see how the wife like's it...... "but honey, I bought it for you" might work.....maybe

There is nothing like a day at the range with your wife. You can get away with using her as an excuse to buy a new gun no more than two times every 3 years. She will catch on if you go for the third.

 

Whenever my wife expresses interest in a new gun, I make it the backgound on her computer. Eventually she says lets go get one. If she even says that's cute it is up there. Works very well.

Just out of idle curiosity, why would she avoid the range?

There is nothing like a day at the range with your wife. You can get away with using her as an excuse to buy a new gun no more than two times every 3 years. She will catch on if you go for the third.

 

Whenever my wife expresses interest in a new gun, I make it the backgound on her computer. Eventually she says lets go get one. If she even says that's cute it is up there. Works very well.

Though, most indoor ranges have excellent ventilation, drawing the air towards the targets and away from the shooters.

after a few months, the baby will hear everything - no earplugs for the kid and as it grows, the insulation gets less and less....

 

the lead is also a real issue - I often wonder whether we should get our lead levels checked as part of our annual physicals. Especially women of child=bearing age. Not trying to scare anyone, but just a thought

Sound waves and lead are a few reasons, but jarring is a big concern. For small frame girls, the recoil of even a 9mm is a little too much "sudden" movement.

Thank all of you. The lead for one. And you never know what type of hand cannon people are bringing to the range. I can feel a 12 gage to my core 5 booths away the vibration is not good for the baby. Some studies say it is OK but way take chances.

I agree with you, it's not worth the risk. My wife wants to come with me, but after my last visit someone here was shooting a .308 variant AR.. That thing was 3 booths over and between the flash, the ammo jumping over to my lane, and the blast felt I decided that it wasn't worth it. Especially where we are at now the baby can even hear, so its a double NONO.

I prefer to leave the wife & home & take the girlfriend to the range. Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

 

I agree that pregnancy & an indoor range are probably not the best match. Although I wouldn't hesitate to take her plinking with a Ruger 10/22 at an outdoor range.
