Forgive me for not jumping in on this earlier, I’m out of town at the moment. I am the seller, and I had recommended J&J Gunworks. He is local to me, and I have bought 2 firearms through him before. His transfer fee then was $45, and I didn’t think it was too unreasonable. Last one I bought was a shotgun in Nov 2019. Frankly, I was pretty taken aback when I heard what J&J was charging for the transfer this time. Had I known he had doubled his transfer fee, I wouldn’t have recommended him. That’s ridiculous. I’d have to go back and check my purchase records, I don’t know if he charged me a 3% fee for a credit card. The ammo thing, well honestly, I kind of get it. He doesn’t have much, and he wants to be able to sell it to people purchasing firearms from him. To me, that’s a reasonable point. @axeman_g, I’ll reach out to you when I get back in town. This never sat right with me.

I don't see an issue with the OP here. He stated up front he knew he was ultimately responsible and is just sharing his experience. This also serves as a good PSA for the many, many new owners or soon to be new owners we have here. Just like any other business, some FFL are more in line with the prices in the market and want repeat business. Others will bleed the public for every cent they can. As always, caveat emptor.
  4. 3 points
Point taken. But let this be a lesson, always call the FFL and ask about fees.

Right up front, this issue is a result of me not using my purchase power and walking away. But I was not being patient, I wanted my new H&K. Purchased an H&K USPC .40 here on forum. Seller mentions J&J Gunworks and wanted to transfer through there. I agreed, having never used them before or even know of their existence. Its not to far from me in Cherry Hill, about 20 mins. We met up there and did paperwork on Sat morning. First I asked about some .223 ammo he had in boxes, he has about a dozen unopened 1000rd boxes. Told me he would sell me 5 boxes of 20 max and price was $100. That's a little steep, understatement, so I passed. I then asked for his Transfer fee..... $85 plus NICS $15 plus tax.!!!! I left my gun there while I awaited NICS. I should have pulled it. NICS is in, I asked again for his transfer fee... he quotes me $103 again, I again stated that it was too high. I went back today to get the H&K, expressed my displeasure with the price and cited numerous other FFLs within 30 minutes of me that where 50% less. He smirked and said that "I should have gone to them." Then I look at my receipt, 3% Credit Card Fee added. Never again... and I suggest you dont go either. This guy is what is wrong with the firearms community right now.

Well . . . That sucks and thanks for warning us . . . I'm in Cherry Hill as well but haven't been there. But, you had the option of contacting them before setting up to do the transfer there and asking about the price. This is why I TRY to use the same few shops where I already know people. Once the gun is left there, you don't have a lot of options.
  7. 2 points
Two separate FFLs we both pay the same landlord who owns the property. Zero connections.
  8. 2 points
We do not sell guns at the range. We only do transfers for members of the range and we only charge the illegal NICS fee. Two separate businesses. Anthony

Certainly! The rifle was built specifically to what I thought would suit me the best for 3-gun. The qualities I sought were light weight to swing around faster, but I also wanted an 18" barrel so I could squeeze a rifle length gas system on it. Of course on top of all that I wanted minimal sight picture disturbance when firing for fast follow ups. The lighter the rifle gets the harder this gets as you have less mass working in your favor. I got the rifle light by using the 2a armament balios lite milled receiver set which is very light weight. Even the picatinny rail is milled out on top, the brass deflector is minimized, there is no forward assist...it is light. On top of that I used a handful of titanium parts like the pistol grip screw, takedown pins, safety etc. The handguard and stock aren't the lightest units in the world but on the lighter side, the stock is the luth ar mba-3 with the adjustable bits removed as I didn't utilize them. The handguard is a carbon fiber 15" long octagonal handguard. 15" was important to me because I have long lankey arms and I put my support hand all the way out there to drive the gun. I got octagonal so there is a flat on the underside to rest it more securely on barricades and things like that. I also shaved weight by paying a few bucks more for a fluted barrel which is a White Oak 18" SPR fluted, although now they have even better options. I kept sight picture disturbance down with a big JP 3 port muzzle brake, combined with less reciprocating mass and consequently, less gas in the system. Working from front to back the gas is turned down with a SLR titanium adjustable gas block. The BCG is a stainless LMOS one from JP, and the buffer is also the JP LMOS rifle length buffer in a rifle length tube (rifle length wins in the performance department hands down). That's all in front of a Woff -10% recoil spring which allows the gas to run even more turned down. Less mass and less spring needed to move around means less gas = less energy = less sight picture disturbance. The dot is a Vortex Spitfire AR which is the prism style red dot. I enjoyed shooting matches with it because I feel it has several advantages over traditional dots. The larger circles around the dot are measured in MOA (22 and 45moa respectively I think, but i forget) and you can use them to gauge hold over, because in 3-gun you aren't turning dials and practically speaking you need to hold over everything. Holding over a target at long range with a red dot gets weird if you have only the dot, as the target is swimming around under your dot in empty glassy space and it gets weird. The rifle weighs about 6.5 pounds with an empty magazine and the optic on top of it. I hope this was helpful, it turned out longer than I anticipated LOL.

No, c'mon.... it is perfectly reasonable to walk into a place of business, start a transaction, and then after it is all started ..... only then ask about how much said transaction will be, and complain abt it. Then, doubly complain - and get upset by a snarky comment and besmirch someone on a public forum - 'cause i feel i paid to much'. Why is it gun owners feel that everyone has to drop their drawers on pricing just because its guns or ammo?

I tried the CMMG conversion out of three ar barrels. Two of them accuracy was good for short range training. Don’t expect tight groups at 100 yards. But for 25 yards you’re good to go. A dedicated 22 LR barrel will get you better accuracy.
  12. 1 point
    Well . . . Hasn't this gotten out of hand . . .

As you probably know, there are transaction fees associated with CCs. That cuts into the retailer's bottom line and makes profitability difficult when working off thin margins in viciously competitive markets. I happen to dislike when stores have a CC surcharge. I much prefer the cash discount model. As a practical matter, it is the same, but instead of penalizing someone for using a CC, you are rewarding them for paying in cash. It's all about the optics.

Right it really is more than a hobby. It initially started as home defense. My wife convinced me to get my permit and she would get hers. She has friends who shoot as a sport and also very much into it. The irony here is that she’s still waiting for her permit. She e-mailed PD and they’re saying they’re backed up, I applied for my permit and already got it. Same PD, we live in the same household, and background check already went through so not sure.. Anyway after going in, I thought proficiency is key to self defense. So I started taking intro classes which lead to more advanced classes. All of this within a very short time period. I’ve been playing The Division 2 since March 2019 and what unfolded in 2020 felt so surreal as if the events from The Division 2 came to life. And what I’ve been doing there in virtual, now all makes sense in real life, calibers, optics, operating systems etc. With any hobby you can have extremes, golf clubs, memberships, outings etc. For me personally the firearms/shooting has been more expensive. Other more expensive hobbies for me has been audio.

Hello All, New here form New Jersey and new to firearms, got my FPID back in Sept 2020. ~2mo from application to receiving permit in the mail. So far spent over $2k on training classes ~30 hours and shooting nearly 5000 rounds and counting. Traded in one range (golf) for another range and trying to go at least once a week either for a class or if not, for range time. I was an avid golfer and haven’t touched a golf club at all in 2020. Maybe 2021 is the year to get back in but running around timed drills has got me hooked. Would love to post pictures but fear it’ll just get inventoried when ATF comes knocking. It seems after becoming a responsible firearms owner, I feel like I’ve become a second class citizen fearful of becoming a criminal just because I own such items, which can become illegal tomorrow. Maybe banning guns will not be a good thing, look at how prohibition turned out. Mainly focused the most popular calibers .308Win/7.62NATO, .223Rem/5.56NATO, .45ACP, 9mm Luger and .22LR. Favorite brands, HK, FN, LWRC, V Seven, ZEV. Stay Health and Stay Safe

@kc17 Kevin, You're more than welcome to stop-by! Best time to do so would be around 11:30-ish so you can have lunch with us, get "in" on the 50-50 and prize raffle and listen to the speakers. We'll have Charlie Cook from "Riding Shotgun With Charlie", myself, our President Dan Grdovic (former Mod here), and a speaker from The Organization of States-NJ. Lunch will be Giberson Farms hot dogs to supplement my Crock Pot Hog Hunt Pork Roast w/ potatoes, corn, celery, onions, carrots and soft drinks. Although we invited our sponsors, they all declined due to the usual "Saturday RUSH" at their businesses. So no "mini Trade Show", just a room full of patriots, some of whom are hunting for the first time Hope to see you tomorrow. Don't be shy! Rosey

Welcome. One heck of a way to start out. It seems you've gone all in. While I'm hesitant to refer to firearms ownership and practice as a hobby, since it is much more than that, I do understand many people see it as a hobby. With that said, just out of curiosity, which hobby do you feel is more expensive, golf or firearms/shooting?

as someone else said........i thought it was illegal to charge more than the 15 buck nics?
  22. 1 point
Wow very cool! I started wanting only a handgun myself ordered an HK VP9 and shipped it to an FFL I’ve gone to in the past RTSP Randolph. While picking it up and doing NICS, I asked if I could look at a rifle. They had two on the wall, LWRC IC-SPR and HK MR556 and thus began the spiral. I have access to a nice lathe and milling machine at another club I”m a member of, maybe I’ll try it some time.
  23. 1 point
Good for you. And welcome aboard. I started out wanting just one pistol. I'm now in the middle of redoing my garage so I can continue playing with firearms on my lathe and milling machine. So yeah, it goes that way.

I have the .22 kit for my 92fs Inox. It works freaking fantastic! Beretta has sales every now and then and you can save $100 on the kit if you have patience. It's well worth it at any price though!

22lr would perform better in a Vietnam era M-16 with a 1:12 than a modern 1:7bbl I wonder what 22lr chronos out of an AR barrel, how much velocity is being lost due to the .001 difference. Not strictly true. Some preppers have the kit in their BUG to go wabbit hunting. No point in wasting 223 ammo or making more noise than necessary if one is eating off the fat o' the land.

I've shot at Range 702, The Gun Store, and Las Vegas Gun Range. They all have full auto stuff you can rent. Haven't done Battlefield Vegas, but I've heard nothing but good things about the place, so yeah go ahead and do that one. If you don't mind going out side of Vegas, Pro Gun Club in Boulder is a nice outdoor range. They do a lot of sporting clays, periodic taxi cab shoots, and the minute you walk into the club house they have a full service bar right there . If you've got friends out there with guns to borrow there's BLM land designated as shooting areas you can go use.

I hate it when people are right. Time to bust out the moacks and filer and hope I don't loosen the fasteners while I'm staking as raz-o cautioned... I'll post a pic of it for all your giggles and toe-cringing when done. Thanks all for your advice and suggestions...y'all are the best!

That is not to the TDP. That being said, it may never fail or it may fail tomorrow. I would buy a staking tool ($60 on Brownells) and make it good. Retain Value? Reliability is more important than resale value. How much value is there in a gun that doesn’t work right?
  30. 1 point
Bushmaster used to have a reputation for loose keys due to poor staking and or undersized screws. I have a staking tool if you are around Cedar Grove and want to put a more aggressive staking on that.

Well now. If i now i have a high demand product. If i wait i know prices will rise on my product. Why wouldn’t i wait to sell. C’mon really. Id do the same. Im doing the same with stuff i want to sell. I dont have a college degree. But i do have common sense. Are you a millennial?

I'll throw in a recommendation for the Holosun 510C reflex sight. Basically a less expensive Eotech. I have a couple of them and they have been fantastic. Very low (to practically none) parallax. Great battery life, supplemented by solar power. Holds a zero and works very well with a 3x magnifier.

Based on this data, I’d probably get an Aimpoint...and I’m a HUGE Trijicon fan. https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/Observations-On-The-Effect-Of-Parallax-Error-When-Shooting-With-An-Aimpoint-Comp-M5-And-Trijicon-MRO/18-761668/
