gave it 3 coats of tung oil.

Blond wood looks better, IMHO.

Saw a guy that had an M1 for sale with furniture lighter than that with tiger stripe grain and recoated everything, the contrast was quite striking. I have seen mausers like that but not an M1. He wanted some astronomical amount of money for it well north of $2K, IIRC, seemed to be a collector piece though.
