Dad was right I should have been a teacher or a cop.

The average police officer's 2009 base pay was almost $104,000 in Bergen County and nearly $88,000 in Passaic County, with some of the highest pay in lower-crime areas and some of the lower salaries in higher-crime communities. Here are averages by municipality, along with crime rates and the percent of officers earning at least $100,000. Data covers patrolmen up through police chiefs.

we can't vote police budgets down.. I think police should be measured on their towns crime rate, the more crime the more funding the department gets, kinda like the merit system for teachers.

This is so true. I work at a PD and the officers make way to much for the size of the town. They are actually getting rid of the police department in my town and having the neighboring towns PD take over because the taxes here got too high. Most of Hightstowns budgets is to the Police Department, and our town is very small.

They tried that in Flemington last year, but it didn't pass. The town

IMO even if a LEO works for a lower-crime or higher-crime community they all put their lives on the line every time they stop a car for a traffic violation or answer a domestic violence call. I am a firm believer that every community must take care of their first line off defense and that would be the Police Department.

Its hard to get a cop job. You really have to know somebody on the inside. My son took no less than 6 exams, passed with top marks, has a Rutgers 4 year degree in criminal justice, and never was able to get on a police force. So, he gave up and went to law school instead.

If you are talking about a Non-Civil Service Town, then YES, you are 100% correct, otherwise..Sorry but Nonsense...

My Town, as well as the other Civil Service towns DONT play those games. the List is the List. Qualified Veteran's go to the Top, then it goes by score under that. the ONLY other time that a list can be "Bumped" is through Lateral transfer from another agency, OR, as now with all the layoffs, a department can hire officers laid off from another agency by putting them at the head of the list. Now, NON-Civil Service Towns? You are 21000% right, if you dont Know someone, ot at least the RIGHT someone (or in the case of Hackensack, "Donate" to the proper campaign), then you're SOL. Our mayor is all pissed off right now because we'eve only hired maybe 2 guys from town over the last 8 years or so..80% of the guys we hire are from ONE other town in the county, but the List is the List, We have a Captian who's son DOESNT work for us because he didnt score high enough. It's (With us) the same with Promotions, The LIST is the LIST is the LIST.

The police will never save your ass, so that's a pretty piss-poor first line of defense. They are very important, and they have a tough job. But they're not going to pluck you from the jaws of death. That's pretty rare.

we can't vote police budgets down.. I think police should be measured on their towns crime rate, the more crime the more funding the department gets, kinda like the merit system for teachers.

Then you will end up with something like this:

http://www.villagevoice.com/2010-05-04/ ... precinct/1

Eight pages of stories about how cops intimidate people that try to file crime reports. And, when a person is robbed at gunpoint, and has the shit kicked out of him, and his wallet stolen, the report goes in as "lost property" (wallet). Their only metrics are how many people they stop on the street and frisk.

It's time to learn that only you are responsible for your safety. Let the cops do their job, which is investigating crime and apprehending suspects. Not protecting you.

Cops (and firefighters, and our military, and others in public safety) put their lives on the line to keep others safe. They kiss their husbands, wives, children, and parents goodbye when the leave for work, planning to see them again in 8/10/12 hours, but knowing they could be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty to keep YOUR husbands, wives, children, and parents out of harm's way. What's a fair amount to pay someone who's willing to put their life on the line for others?

Just my two cents...

That "life on the line" argument is weak at best. They made a career choice knowing what they were getting into. I don't see the grunts in the military making that kind of money.

If you're going to pay a 100K salary to a police officer then you should require something for it, like a 4 year degree and lots of time served. High starting salaries invite job seekers who arent qualified and know the right people or people who are just looking for the money. I always believed being a cop was a calling, not a "hey, this pays good I'll try it" kind of job. The salaries should start low and stay that way to only get the comitted people applying for the positions. Let the monetary rewards come a few years later.

It's not police work, it's politics. On the flip side, the job is politics in many places so the job can suck as well. But not 100K suck.

I have the utmost respect for all of them. But the people I know took the job because it was a job. None of them thought of it like the priesthood. They figured 25 and out sounds good and took it. We lose more people in construction then fire and police combined in a year. But I never herd a construction worker say I'm going out to make the world a better prettier place and I dont know if I'll make it home !! Both risk there lives at times none took the job to die they took it cause it was a job plain and simple.

I love cops. I respect and admire what they do. But putting them on a pedestal is a little much.

You think teachers make a retarded amount of money? Look at police instead! I live in a sleepy town that basically has 0 crime and is only 1 square mile in size. Yet we have 40 police officers with a starting salary of about 100k?! Let alone the fact that they only require a HS degree to at least apply. At least the state police requires a BS but still that isn't a 100k job, I don't care how dangerous it is -- military is much worse and is half the pay. Total BS.

Talk about wasteful spending.

Nobody realizes this...That's why crime victims can't sue PD's that did not prevent a crime upon them!!!

There is not ONE cop in my town that makes less then 100k, explain that then? (we also have approx 40 cops for 1 square mile...PD system is just as ****ed as the education system)

I did a little research in the nearby towns and all are about the same, hardly anyone under 100k. Total BS. Hate monmouth county wasteful spending.

That isnt what you said.. You said "TO START" Top Salaries, Once you add in benefits, i;m not surprised, and their take home with overtime is more than likely Higher than that (Oh and BEFORE you start whining about overtime, 90% of that is generated by being short handed). Starting pay ranged between about $25 and 40K. As far as too Much? You get what you pay for. Go ahead and pay your cops like shit...and you'll get New Orleans.

They do start at 100k, I don't see one cop making under that and I'm pretty sure the APP list doesn't factor in benefits as part of their salary (though if they do, then I'm sorry and retract my statement).

Again...I live in a quiet town, we don't need a multimillion dollar police force for 1 square mile.
