Black bear hunt gets final OK

Recommended Posts

I'd be very interested in bagging a bear, but what firearms will be legal to use? I assume slugs only, since centerfire rifles are not permitted for hunting in NJ.

Really? Darn.. a 7.62x54R in the right place would take the bear right down :(

YUP only shotguns I believe. They may let bow's but you arn't going to see me shooting a bear with a bow.

I will be getting a permit and will be trying like hell to get a bear. We shall see what happens.

Or as Ron White once said "I was doing 55 with my head lights on and the horn blowin, and I got em."

My philosphy has always been, never shoot a sharp stick at any animal that runs faster than you do....especially one that may see you as a food item.

I would do crossbow... Also, with the distance limit for bow being reduced to 150 ft from a house, I may have to pay Mark a visit ;)

hey, show me where I can sign up would ya?

and, just 'cuz I need to know, what are you expected to do with the dead 3 or 400 pounder anyway?

Butcher it up and eat. As long as there are no worms in the meat, I am good... you hungry??

I mean more along the lines of dragging it to a car and getting it home to do that. Forgive the newb question but I have never actually heard good things about bear meat.

The wife has no problem with deer meat but bear meat? I guess where I ma going with this is if I were to go on this hunt, I don't plan on eating it. What would my options be then?

Thanks for the link!

Trenton, NJ --(AmmoLand.com)- The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is currently offering Bear Hunting Seminars, which uncertified hunters must attend in order to obtain a permit for the bear season included in the recently adopted Comprehensive Black Bear Management Policy (CBBMP).

The CBBMP will become effective upon publication in the NJ Register in early fall.

Certifications remain valid for hunters who attended a NJ Bear Hunting Seminar from 2003 to 2006. Those who are interested in bear hunting but do not have certification are encouraged to register for a seminar as soon as possible.

The first round of seminars is now posted at www.wildlifelicense.com/nj/ALS/course/course_report.php where hunters must register to attend. Seminars will be offered throughout the fall, including the weekend before the season to accommodate hunters coming from out-of-state.

The bear hunt will be held in portions of a 1,000 square-mile area north of Route 78 and west of Rt. 287 in Morris, Sussex, Warren and Passaic counties. The black bear permit application period opens on October 1; hunters will be able to apply at any license agent or on the division

Shotguns only.

3in slugs nicely aimed behind the leg do the trick. Break the leg, drop the bear, dont deal with a 400lb pissed bear that is going to charge for about 25-50 yards before it bleeds out trying to perfect a lung shot on an animal that big.

I am totally going out again this winter for a bear.

If you do not want to eat the meat, you can donate it, or just take it to the taxidermist and have the hide done, Bear meat is not that bad, some parts are gamier, but if you grind it up and make burger or sausage, mix it with pork. Do not use the fat from the bear if you can, there is a lot of flavor in it and can change everything...

ASk around and see what others do with the meat.

For me if I kill it and it is not spoiled I eat it. (provided there are no worms in the meat, common problem in Canadian bear)

    • If you’re going to VA, buy 2 radios.  Program one for here and one for there.  If you guys are buying Baofeng radios do yourself a favor and get a tactical antenna for it,it’ll extend your reach.
    • Both our memories are a bit lacking. 3 bystanders were hit by NYPD bullets and 6 were hit by fragments at the Empire State Building shooting. The bullets later were determined to have passed through the bad guy as I said. He was not a big guy. The police fired 16 rds and 7 hit the bad guy.  Spray and pray?  I think not.  These officers fired until the threat was stopped and everyone is moving. Have you ever tried to hit a moving target whilst you're moving.  If you watch the video from where the police encounter him, the BG draws his gun from his bag, NYPD guys shoot, and the BG hit the ground is about 2 or 3 seconds.  The closest officer is maybe 12 feet or less.  The closest cover are those concrete flower pots.  If the officers chose to take cover before drawing the BG would have had a chance to shoot at least one officer. Know your target and beyond?  Agree 100%.  However, this by the Empire State Building at 9 am during the week.  There are bystanders and traffic in every direction.  The officers had a choice of doing what they did or letting the BG shoot them with his 1911 and shoot someone else. I think they made the right choice and the same one I would have made.  The officers exercised the best option in protecting themselves and the public. The first video is the police shooting.  The second is more detailed and gives you a lot of background information on the shooter. One thing this shows is if NYPD had to use fmj undoubtedly more bystanders would have been wounded perhaps killed.  NJ's hollowpoint law. only creates more danger to the public.
