Wouldn't this be considered illegal?

Did they take a hunter safety course? Have proper Spring Season Tags? If not, Fish and Game should take away their firearms and fine them a G note...I kid of course. They need to have open season on seagulls along Route 72.

Sounds pretty illegal to me. NJ dep. of fish and wildlife should have been the ones to take care of the situation, killing it being the last resort. A police officer shooting a turkey is no different then you or i doing it, nothing grants them the ability to do this, and it's one of many reason the dep of f. and w. was created. Sounds like they wanted it gone now and took it out back....hehe. Now will something come of it, i highly doubt it because the police did it, but if i told them i killed a turkey that was reeking havok on my street i would probably be fined a boatload of cash. Come to think of it, we have a turkey that likes to peck at peoples cars at an intersection around here, i'd love to see that guy on my dinner table.

It was probably injured and the LEO put it down. I don't see the problem...

That's no reason to kill it, certainly no justification there. Nor do i think a police officer has the knowledge to deem an animal injured to the point it cant survive on it's own. If it was injured they could have captured it and relocated it. Again, nothing grants a Police officer the right to put down any animal for any reason. The dept of fish and wildlife would have done it for them, sounds like they just wanted it gone and made it happen.

I look at it this way, the turkeys were here before us, and they have equally if not more rights to be here then us. We create way more problems for them then they do us, we took away there homes, and wonder why there walking around our streets.

This can be done, but you need to follow the law:

1. Don't get caught

2. Make gravy from the drippings.

Scoped Gamo Air Rifle + Predictable Turkey Behavior = Hot Open Sammiches with Gravy

Dude, you're killing me over here. Hear my stomach roar.

BTW, don't poach, kids. We are talking about extreme situations of nuisance animals. Probably not relevant to NJ law, but damn well relevant to God's law and also PA law.

So using your logic, if a vehicle strikes a deer and it is obvious that it has 4 broken legs, the PD should call F&G to come relocate it? Are you freaking kidding me?

I started this thread and while I really dont care per say that they shot it. I don't feel it was really warranted. My big issue is that I cant go shoot a turkey until the season opens. If I do I am in violation of laws and can be fined and all that fun stuff. Meanwhile those bozos get a blurb in the paper.

You do it and you'll get more than a Blurb. :)

One of the biggest reasons some PA and other state LE Agencies use suppressors is to kill wounded deer in populated areas is so all the PETA types don't come running to their windows when they hear a gun shot or 47. :thsmiley_deadhorse:

If you try to put a deer / bear / Crip / Blood out of their misery using a pistol round, you might need to reapply the lead treatment a couple of times until you get your desired results. Pull the cruiser in tight if you can to the wounded mammal, pap-pap and then call Animal Control for a removal... or your local Sino take-out joint.

I was driving through Princeton about 10 years ago on my way to work. Due to traffic I was on one of the side streets with the mansions. An injured deer was on the side of the road and a police cruiser was pulled next to it. The officer visually examined the deer as I stopped next to him. The officer pulled his pistol and shot the deer in the head from about 5 feet away; about 15 feet from me.

I thought to myself, hmmm, I thought it would have been more protocol involved with it.

Like it or not euthinizing an animal is not part of a Police officers job, when we have rouge bears roaming around they call animal specialists, people take in rescue animals all the time there is no need for an uneducated person to make a decision like that. If a police officers notices a hurt animal he can just kill it? thats basically your logic. F&w hire very knowledgeable personnel to take care of NJ's wildlife, they are here for a reason.

Like it or not, it is, and a necessary part of the job. I challenge you to find anyone that will take in an injured whitetail deer in NJ.

Challenge accepted....

#1 Popcorn Park Zoo.

#2 Also if you look at the spring ?? (not sure) hunters guide it talks about caring for injured or sick wild animals. There are people in NJ who are licensed, registered, or whatever you gotta be to take care of wild animals.

What do I win?

Like I said, I am really only pointing out the hypocrisy. There is also a difference between an animal that has been hit by a car and is injured and an animal that is annoying drivers.

Other people annoy me while driving all the time. Doesn't mean I can shoot them.

I really, really want a turkey. This thread is driving me crazy. Give me turkey! Never seen one on my property and don't really hunt much. And a good turkey is a lot of work and a lot of food. Maybe I can get the family matriarch to do one for Easter.
