TheDon 3 Posted September 5, 2012 I go shooting with my next-door neighbor from time to time. He's a pistol-guy at heart, but has gotten somewhat attached to my AR15. He wants to buy one and asked me for a recommendation. I asked him for a budget. He said $700. Trying not to laugh, I suggested something closer to $1,200 and informed him that my ST would cost him $1,800+. He said he really has to keep it under $750, $800 max out the door. I am really reluctant to say the "B" word. You can't even get a S&W in his price range. Anyone know anything about PSA? Any recommendations in his price range? Thanks
A-Tech 8 Posted September 5, 2012 I know Stags are going for under $800 typically. Not a bad AR by any means. He doesn't need all the bells and whistles that I'm sure yours has to be valued around $1800. Let him buy the gun and peice it up to match his budget. Try the Firearms price request at the top of the page and see what you get.
TheDon 3 Posted September 5, 2012 Thanks A-Tech. I'll check into Stag. Shame on me for just assuming Stags were in the same price range as the S&W. Another question: If I tell him to go with an A2 upper, what will he really be losing for a plinking/zombie gun? Anything in the A3 spec that is a "must-have"? jrfly3006 42 Posted September 5, 2012 Have my Stag model 3 for a few months now..runs great..excellent warranty and customer service..fit and finish nice..850 out the door with tax and NICS..would absolutely recommend it
A-Tech 8 Posted September 5, 2012 A3 is flat top. If he doesn't plan on adding any optics, than I guess he would be ok. There is a detachable carry handle made for flat top uppers though. So if he wanted the look of the handle, he could have both. Personally my choice is on A3 for the fact that I can all sorts of optics on it, while maintaining co-witness. jrfly3006 42 Posted September 5, 2012 FWIW Stag mod 3 comes flat top..waiting on red dot but running gen 2 MBUS for now..
siderman 1,140 Posted September 5, 2012 S&W M&P Sport is easily in that price range with $ left over for ammo. No forward assist(so what?) or ejection port cover(dont crawl thru mud!) and still shoots 5.56 just fine.

Tactical Turtle 11 Posted September 5, 2012 Mp15 sport you can find in that price range. There's a ar in the marketplace for 750 with no nics or tax
when_shtf 4 Posted September 5, 2012 Stag3 Upper $465 LW-15 Loaded Lower $110 That's $575. Now you just need to add sights/optics and mags. It can all be done for under $700 and the quality will be very good.
checko 180 Posted September 5, 2012 I got a stag upper. I think they're gtg.

TheDon 3 Posted September 5, 2012 I just looked up the specs on the model 3. Strange handguard system, but otherwise a good LE. I am going to try to convince my neighbor to spend the extra $100 for the performance package: upgraded barrel steel (4150 barrel steel chrome lined) •1:7 twist rifling •M4 feed ramps •M-16 bolt carrier •Heavy buffer assembly I'll have him post a price request when he is ready to buy. Am I correct that Stag does not have a midlength? Thanks for the recommendation.
Krdshrk 3,878 Posted September 6, 2012 For that price range, you'll have to skip on the midlength...
notmetoo 41 Posted September 6, 2012 Cheyenne had M&P Sports for $625 for a while. Might be $675 now. My son picked one up. Decent bargain AR.

The handguard is unconventional but very lightweight, comfortable and fully customizable..i didnt go for the plus package but all of their guns come with the m4 ramps including mine. Im not sure about the midlength..
Krdshrk 3,878 Posted September 6, 2012 With that Stag Model 3 upper, you'll need a low profile gas block front sight.
jrfly3006 42 Posted September 6, 2012 With that Stag Model 3 upper, you'll need a low profile gas block front sight. Yep..since i had a regular sight already i threw it on a yankee hill gas block riser (12$)to get it to same height..working pretty well
TheDon 3 Posted September 6, 2012 With that Stag Model 3 upper, you'll need a low profile gas block front sight. Thanks for the heads-up. I was planning on just giving him the sights that came on my son's M&P to get him by until he can afford optics and BUS. Now I guess the we'll need to order a riser for the front sight. Shocker 151 Posted September 6, 2012 Maybe look for a used AR? +a billion For $800 you could get all mid- or high-level brand names, AND probably a stack of mags, PLUS maybe even optics. People seem to change their minds about AR's all the time. And since everything is modular even if something broke you replace it for a few bucks. Especially for NJ compliant
