RobertJames 14 Posted December 24, 2012 I guess the bad guys can check the map as to which house to skip now! Judging by all the dots, I don't think there are too many to skip. Impressive. I thought to see that many gun owners you'd have to go further up-state. ETA despicable on the part of the newspaper.
Bully 749 Posted December 24, 2012 I would publish the journalist's name and address. If I find anything like that in my neck of the woods, I will personally go and visit the paper with an attorney in tow. C

M1152 713 Posted December 24, 2012 Or to rob to get guns when nobody is home yep, then the publisher should be held as an accomplice to the thief and any gun crime takes place afterwards
woodentoe 14 Posted December 24, 2012 I see they also have dots in NJ. Do they supply alternate address on a NY permit ? They may be business owners in NY and live in NJ. You'd need a premises permit to have a handgun in your store.

lunker 274 Posted December 24, 2012 I scrolled though pages of comments. I couldn't find a positive one. The closest I saw were a couple of "freedom of the press allows them to do it... but it is still morally wrong.".

Parker 213 Posted December 25, 2012 This happened a couple of years ago. Someone put up a link and listed all the licensed handgun owners in the state. It included owners names, addresses, etc., dating back to 1930. The site was taken down after officials got involved. http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Gun-list-site-returns-593077.php
H.M. Murdock 0 Posted December 25, 2012 In some ways that cat is out of the bag -- the data for all points on the map are easily retrieved in batch and written to a CSV file (Bucket 3 -- check) Some jerk-off activist is bound to keep it up somewhere on the internet, out of the reach of our courts. Sigman 41 Posted December 25, 2012 The media are Obama's minions. I have not watched a news station since this incident has happened and will not be part of their ratings quest. I've been keeping myself entertained watching Trailer Park Boy's episodes.
Parker 213 Posted December 25, 2012 The original link (whospacking.org) was taken down but was discussed on numerous NY gun forums and defensivecarry.com back in 2010. The list is still out there if you look hard enough. Why is this okay? New York Penal Law § 400.00(5) states: "The name and address of any person to whom an application for any license has been granted shall be a public record."
so_dank 0 Posted December 25, 2012 It all depends on the records.. are they considered public records if so have at them. If its being used a basic public knowledge no harm done in states eyes. Unless it can be shown its being used to slander someones character. If they start to make statements about the residents being hostile, criminal, unfit citizens I'd be first to contact a lawyer. Media used to be important and trusted. Now its a soap opera, how sad or evil can we make this music sound.
PDM 91 Posted December 25, 2012 Well this a perfect example of why it isn't "reasonable" to license gun owners. Subjects them to risk and increases risk of gun theft.
