Ordering a handgun

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

Just applied for 3 permits at the local PD and despite it being less than 10 months since I received my last background check, they want me to get fingerprinted again. I don't know if any of you have tried to schedule that lately, but currently the next available appointments are about two weeks out.

Anyway, my question is if a handgun you want is not in stock - can you order it with the permits you receive even if you'd take delivery of the gun AFTER the permits have expired? I'd hate lose a pistol permit or two because I can't find what I want. Do shops fill out the permit the day you placed the order or the day you took delivery? Never had to order a gun before these crazy times.

Thanks

There is absolutely no reason to be fingerprinted again. They don't change and I would refuse to pay for it! They can run a background request all by themselves. I would suggest speaking with the detective in charge first, then his Chief, and if that doesn't work the NJSP Firearms Bureau to give the Chief a nudge call.

Ive ordered a few guns through Gallery of Guns, very easy and fast. Ordered on a monday night , FFL called me that thursday to come pick it up. As for the permit, You only fill it out upon delivery of the gun. As for these times now its extreme thin pickins online.

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's ridiculous I'll have to pay 120 dollars just for fingerprinting in the last year. I guess I'll try to talk to the PD and see what I can do.

I knew the serial # went on the permit... was just hoping there was something I could do to not have useless permits and have to go through the entire ridiculous process for a 4th time.

I guess I'll try my local shops and then look around online if it comes to that.

Thanks for the replies!

Your problem is that the PD doesn't know how to use Morphotrak. Once you are fingerprinted, you are really done as far as Morphotrak is concerned. If they used it like elsewhere, current background can be checked with a simple order request, prints can be electronically delivered to any agency, fingerprint cards can even be printed... Another frustraiting thing about NJ... It took me some effort with my local PD as well because the Chief likes to have background done every so many permits issued, which IS the discretion of the issuing authority. So he and I had a sit down and discussed the situation (actually a great Chief, just POOR police clerk) and I no longer have to do anything for the subsequent background checks.

Stop bribing him with duncan donuts. You didn't bring enough for all of us

Their wrong you only have to do that once.. Did your prints change i dont think so.. if they did you need to figure that out cause you could make alot of money on the black market!!!

I'm gonna stop by the PD today and ask to speak to the officer that requested it... if not him someone else to try to get it resolved. I JUST picked up a rifle yesterday and went through the NICS and can show them that paperwork. Hopefully they're reasonable with me.

Quick update... stopped in and talked to the person who requested that I get fingerprinted again. Turns out the Chief who signed my original FPID has since retired and this guy is the replacement. He told me that everyone going through the first time with him will have to get reprinted, but after that we won't have to do it in the future.

I wasn't going to argue with him, so I thanked him for his time and left. Oh well...

sorry, but that sounds like a load of crap to me. an $18 background check is what they are supposed to do after you are fingerprinted.. (at least, that was what i was told by my PD)

Yeah, that's the actual cost when requesting current background on someone already in the system. Some PDs pass the cost along, some do not.

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
