Why N.J. could soon be only state without self-serve gas

Recommended Posts

Christie implemented odd/even gas rationing during the Sandy post storm crisis due to the long lines of people filling up their spare tanks for their generators.  I was one of the ones without power for 12 days, I remember it well.

Yup, here, too. We had it a lot worse in PA, though. Roughly 1/4 of the population (over 3 million people) without power for at least a week. We did not have the long term gas shortages, though. I had people in Jersey actually asking me to bring them gas when I went there and they saw my plate.

It should be optional, not subject to the whim of that union thug, Swiney. As a kid in HS and college I worked in a couple of gas stations and have probably pumped many tens of thousands of gallons of gas. I have no problem with having someone else fill my car while I listen to the radio. If you have a blinding desire to pump your own, it should not be against the law as it is now.

This right here. I don't understand the great debate that I'm seeing all over the Web about whether or not it should be self serve or full service, as if those are the only options. Why has this gotten SO much attention nationwide and our firearm rights don't? It's pumping gas....it's not rocket science

I haven't seen a full serve pump in 20 years.

I think there might be a button you can push or something to request a cashier to come out. It would be faster to go inside, wait in line, pay with cash, come back out and pump exactly what you paid without going back in for change.

There are no gas pumpers at the ready outside of NJ as far as I have seen.

UPDATE!

I found two gas stations with Full Serve islands "near" where I live. I still have not actually pulled into a gas station (outside of Jersey) with ANY Full Serve dispensers in almost 20 years. And in that time I have spent quite a bit of time in PA (obviously) and been to (not simply through) at least 10 states all over the country more than once.

They may not be as rare as I thought but they certainly are not common.

We have one near our house in Bucks county,PA. But it's .10 cents more per gallon and only the Jersey women pull up into the "full service" islands. BTW, my wife never pumped her own gas and never wanted to, until we moved  to PA. Now she prefers it....pull up, pump asap and then leave. The BJ's near our house is always 12 cents cheaper than all other stations plus we get 10 cents off per gallon with the card and an additional 5 cents after shopping. It's still about 5 cents more a gallon than NJ, but for in/out quickness I go there.

BTW, I'm amazed how many of my NJ friends rarely or never pumped their own gas...they think all states have full service.

You obviously don't use cash. Self Serve was a NIGHTMARE for me when I moved to PA. Wait in line to pay, pump the gas, then wait in line a SECOND time to get change. Sucks!!!

I'm always amazed at how crusty and old the gaspumps are in Pennsylvania. Specifically, they are the old kind without the nozzle cover and the pump housing itself is often analog.

They probably dispense 95% of what they are supposed to also.

i generally pump my own. at least in my mustang. i don't trust a gas jockey to touch my car.

that said..........fuck that self serve bullshit. they want to make us pump our own? then lower the price accordingly, since they will no longer be employing gas jockeys.

With the '77 Chevy I've had a couple gas station employees here in NJ get the nozzle stuck...plus damamge to the paint from gas being spilled and even some who didn't know how to remove a capor lock gas cap...one guy gave me DIESEL instead of GAS. I was PISSED, had to get the tank dropped.

I just pull up, hand the worker my CC and tell him "I'M PUMPING IT!" if they don't like it I tell 'em where to shove it after the amount of screw ups I've seen.

In Chester I had to fill up last year, it was a self serve Sunoco station. The pumps were from the late 70's w/ out digital read out. The hose had a pin hole sized leak in it...I made it a point to fill up before getting over the Commodore bridge from that point

I am brand-loyal to ExxonMobil and have been for over 10 years.  I pay for my gasoline with either my E/M credit card or my E/M Speedpass on my keychain that is linked to my E/M credit card.  I always pump my own gas at all E/M gas stations in New Jersey, as well as when traveling through other states and never have had any problems or issues with the station attendents of doing so.  I prefer to pump my own gas, especially when some gas pumps prompt you to input your zip code, (associated with you billing address).  It is easier and lets me pump the exact amount I want, rounding to the nearest one dollar amount preference.

I was just reading this and wondering if we are going to see sky rocketing prices for fuel due to refineries and terminals being shut down. From reading past posts I know there are a few forum members who know the ins and outs of the business, hopefully they can chime in.

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in
    • I use an Alien Gear cloak tuck (IWB) with my Shield.  Neoprene back - in the summer it does feel warm but doesn't rub or chafe.   https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-iwb-holster.html Could also go with the shapeshift as it has multiple options - OWB/IWB, Appendix... https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-shapeshift-modular-holster-system.html
    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
