Saiga 12

Recommended Posts

Just in case anyone is interested. The bullet Hole in belleville nj has the saiga 12 for $559 or so, in stock, plus tax. nics included.

they also had the rifle in 7.62 39.

Does the saiga take standard AK mags? And can you put a pistol grip on it or it can only have the straight stock?

Your Q: "Does the saiga take standard AK mags? And can you put a pistol grip on it or it can only have the straight stock?"

1- Just to cover it, the Saiga 12 cannot have a pistol grip in NJ (as its a shotgun). And as you know, they do not take reg AK mags, rather Saiga 12 mags. I know you were asking about the 762 version, but wanted to avoid any confusion with the advice on the 762 version (and have someone commit an indictable crime by mistake).

2- Now onto the 762.

First and foremost, if modding a imported rifle that was so imported as a sporting rifle, you have federal 922 compliance to deal with. Best vendor to visit for all this info is dinzagarms.com.

Yes, it can take a pistol grip, assuming you dont put other banned features on it, i.e., folding stock, bayo lug, threaded barrel, etc.

two ways to add a pistol grip. First would be to move the entire fire control group which takes a considerable amount of work with dremel, etc. then add pistol grip, along with new FCG (US compliance), and some other compliance parts.

Second way to add a PG would be to get the original saiga stock that has a skeleton stock with kind of a pistol grip built into it.

Regarding AK mags, there are mods needed to the saiga to allow it to take standard double stack AK mags. Namely, you have to drill and tap a feed ramp onto the trunnion. It sounds worse than it is. Once thats installed, you need to trim down the mag release a bit to let the standard mag to fit.

- The only reason Id do that mod is if have other AK type rifles that use standard mags. If not, just skip the whole ramp install and just go with Surefire 15 round (yes 15 round) SAIGA mags. They have the feedramp built into them (it looks like a nipple on the top of the mag).

Just make sure you maintain 922 compliance with the required number of US parts; and dont make a AW under NJ law.

Hope this helps.
