Hello from Camden County!!! Want to get my first firearm

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. Introducing myself on these forums. I live in Camden County. I am an NRA member. I have lived all over the US and now in NJ. Unfortunately I cannot believe the level of restriction in the state of NJ.

I have not owned a gun up to this point, my father on the other hand had quite the collection.

I will be a first time gun owner and will obviously go through pistol training and other avenues to make sure I am up to date and trained to maintain a gun.

Anyone else in this area? What has been your experiences with the licensing process thus far? Is it true that in NJ you need a pistol permit for each gun and they expire in 90 days? wtf is up with that!!

If anyone around here knows of good shooting ranges to train at please let me know. Come say hello.

welcome to the forum and NJ.

about permits, yes and no. Yes, you need one for each handgun purchase... yes they expire in 90 days, but you can extend them for another 90 days.

and oh yeah... sooon... one gun a month.

Welcome! Like the Col. said...it all really depends what town you live in. On some rare occasions your FID (Firearms ID card) will get processed in the alotted 30 day time frame. Others may take upwards or 6 months or more. Unfortunately its just a waiting game.

Once you do get your FID you can apply for more PP's (Purchase permits for handguns) and they usually do not take as long as your FID did to be processed.

When you go to your local PD, make sure to apply for your FID and PP's at the same time to avoid having to wait again, after you get your FID. This is the math I do, especially being there is a new law soon to be in effect (as maksim said) for only one handgun per month, figure out how many handguns you would like to purchase, then apply for that many PP's plus two. They are only $2 a piece and you will most likely end up using them, if you don't its not a major loss, just 4 bucks.

thanks guys i appreciate it.

i had to be fingerprinted at my local PD for a job last summer, anyone know if I will need a 2nd fingerprinting?

I have heard stories where a lot of places say "oh our fingerprinting guy is away" to try to delay you from getting your permits and FID.

I have heard nothing but horror stories with getting a CCW in NJ.

Welcome

Unless you have a note from the King - you will NOT get a CCW in NJ. A CCW is a concealed carry permit and despite the fact that NJ is a "May Issue" state the fact remains that unless you are a retired LEO (law enforcement officer) or as noted above have special dispensation from the King (that's that guy in Trenton...) the 'common man' is unable to obtain a CCW in NJ.

In order to obtain your FID you will most likely need to be re-fingerprinted. The FID card enables you to buy any long gun in NJ. You will need a separate pistol permit for each pistol you wish to purchase.

Welcome. Your local PD does not care if you were fingerprinted for something else they want you to get fingerprinted again because they charge for it and it is more inconvenient for you.

Good news for you one of the best FFL's in the state is in Camden co. our own PK90 look up his thread in this forum for contact info.
