Taurus 1911

Recommended Posts

Anyone have one I can shoot at BA over the next few weeks?

Would also like to try an RIA and a Para if anyone has one.

REALLY like to try a Springer, Colt or S&W,Kimber but I am afraid I will like them too much and I can't afford one :(

Yes, I am back on my 1911 kick and since I am looking to get rid of the M&P, 1911 wil be it's replacement.

Not to clutter your brain with more ideas Mike but ParaUSA's GI Expert is a damn good gun at a damn good price. Everyone who has shot mine likes it and it hasn't given me a single problem after 300 or so rounds.

My .02....

My FFL is a damn nice guy, honest, forthright and simple. He was the NJSP and NJDOC firearms instructor for about 20years as well as a champion shooter. does some custom gunsmithing on 1911 and revolvers also, mainly upgrades, race gun, steel plate options etc etc.

I told him I was interested in acquiring a 1911... as I dont have one currently. He showed me a couple he had in stock, estate sale stuff. I told him of my ambi requirements, me being lefty, and he pulled out 2 Tauri ....Pt1991s. His words now.... "This is the best buy in 1911s ever available, from fit, function, features and price."

This is a man I trust explicitly in regards to firearms.

I still have not got one yet though....

But I do, and I really like it. 500+ rounds not a single hiccup.

Having heard that story in person, I fixed that quote for you... ;)

Some of eschew the sluggish 45ACP and go for the mighty 10mm in our 1911s.

I will not argue with 10mm...thats an awesome round...

The recoil caused my rear sight to go flying off after less than a box of ammo in my new DW CBOB. I was lucky to find it in a pretty dark range. To be fair, I think the rear sight screw was stripped.

Take a looksee at an STI Spartan b4 you take the Taurus plunge.

Shane, you seem to be very pushy when it comes to your favorite guns. It's not a bad thing, as I am a little pushy too. But Taurus makes a real nice 1911. AND SO DOES PARA!!!

Mikey... did you get it throught Bob? Can I ask your walking price?

Check my new thread about the Pt1911 I fondled while in WV.

No I didn't. He is too far for me to make it worth my while to drive to.

I am getting it from Vinny who came thru with the best price (once again) using the price request feature :) and from other places I checked.

Also, had lengthy talk about the taurus with Vinny yesterday.

I obviosuly respect his knowledge on such matters. He said the Pt1911 is by far the best buy in 1991. Best 1911 for the money hands down.

This coming from a guy who owns STI 1911s and I am sure has seen many other come thru his hands.

Now I just need to buy some .45 acp and go shootin'.

Ray Ray, pushy? Not at all. Merely pointing out another option with good reviews at a close price point. The only reason I found out about the Spartan line is because I went looking for a hold over 9mm 1911 until I have time to build myself one in that caliber as ALL my 1911's are .45. Now that I ordered the Dillon press, I probably wont persue a 9mm 1911 for IDPA so I can stay in the class Im shooting in. I wouldnt exactly call an STI a fave but the rep for STI is very good quality and workmanship. You have to keep in mind where I come from in my opinions on 1911's. I own zero production 1911's. I also realise not everyone can pop for a custom or build their own. SO having spent countless hours chatting, talking, reading, etc etc with most known smiths on the planet, I have some opinions on what production guns or brands are decent.... Keep in mind that I do not do what most smiths do. I build ground up. Most guns are built on production guns. These are the guys that have the inside scoop on whats good and bad at the production level. My opinions are formed from discussions with them. In the case of the Taurus I have heard some unfavorable things generally speaking and the brand soesnt have the best rep. Also keep in mind that Taurus 1911 sites are porprietary cut and in the case of the railed 1911 very few holsters fit it because its overly large compared to other railed 1911's .In the case of the Para... well I dont want to keep pissing in your cheerios but like I said most smiths dont even want to work on them unless its to gut all the para internals. If you did want work done I do know some smiths that specialise in Para's such as Hunter Customs. Bob does great work! Also I can not attest to the latest factory guns because I simply dont follow production guns anymore.

I have said this countless times. A 1911 is a HARD pistol to do cheaply. It wasnt designed to be made inexpesively. Consider that the price of a Taurus complete is damn close to what I pay for all the parts to build a 1911 WITHOUT the frame slide and barrel!!! Consider the round count a 1911 is designed to achieve without significant failure. What do you consider a lot through your pistol to call it good? My Para was done before I did work Myself. Mellenium Custom overhauled it. I trust THAT para because I have idunno +10,000 rounds through it. But like I said, only the frame and slide are Para. EVERYONE that I shot with that competed with a Para did the same thing I did, flush all Para internals. Their soft. Might be ok for 1000 rounds but not the kind of shooting we did. YMMV.
