fear that if I buy an AR (legal, without evil features etc.) that even though it abides by the AWB if a cop were to see it I would be arrested and charged for having an illegal assault weapon even though it wasn't. I guess I just dont trust cops to know what is legal and what isn't and I dont want to be the test case for the AWB loopholes... this just occured to me this morning, and while I do plan to buy / build one soon it just bothers me that I even have to feel that way in my own state / country. Thoughts?

Just because you don't see them every day, does not mean they aren't around. You can't spend an hour at any range and not see an AR or AK type firearm. This is not lost on the police.

Just out of idle curiosity, where would a cop see it? It goes to the range cased, it stays in the safe at home, it's transported to the smith, shop, etc. in a case. Where would said fictional rifle be seen that it it would even attract the attention of the police?

It's the pervasive fear of guns in NJ. You can taste it in the air. Spend some time in a free state, it's refreshing.

Nobody can reasonably argue that NJ's gun laws aren't stupid, arbitrary and unnecessarily restrictive. That said, we obey these laws not because we fear the consequences of breaking them, but because we're law-abiding citizens and responsible gun owners. We all know how easily we could circumvent these laws. 30 round AR mags are easily available just across the border in America. We don't buy them because the law prohibits it. Same for hi-cap handgun mags, suppressors, flash hiders, etc. Leave the paranoia for those who are hiding illegal stuff in their safes, in their closets, or under their floorboards. As long as you're legally allowed to possess, and have legally acquired, and are in compliance of the absurd laws we live under, be proud to show your stuff off (where legal to do so), and let someone else worry about the cops seeing (and actually recognizing) something they shouldn't have.

 

It's difficult enough to participate in shooting sports in NJ, don't make it tougher on yourself.

 

As an aside, I've seen references to the "walk of shame" when purchasing guns or ammo at Dick's. I think we need to turn that around and consider it a walk of pride, a victory lap, a visible and overt demonstration of a US citizen availing him/herself of the rights recognized by those who risked (and many lost) everything to ensure that we can forever do exactly that, in spite of onerous and restrictive regulation.

As far as I know, it's legal to hunt with a semi-automatic rifle as long as you're properly licensed and the rifle is loaded with the required number of rounds, but can you see people freaking out when they see you out in the field with an AR? :shock:

The thing is, the guy really does have a basis to be afraid of owning a black rifle. There really are ridiculous cops out there who would arrest a guy and try to slap him with weapons charges for a 100% legal weapon Remember the guy in jersey City last year? Psycho shot at cops but all the chief kept saying was that his pump shotgun was an assault weapon because of the sling and shell holder....

There is a general stigma associated with "evil black rifles" in some circles... even in the gun community, there are people that see no need for such things. Certainly doesn't make buying your first AR any easier. That being said, you have nothing to worry about. I've seen ARs at every range and shop I've been to in NJ. If you look thru the AR picture thread on this forum, you'll see that many of us have ARs as well. Best thing to do is to understand the specific things you can and can't do with an AR in NJ and then just forget about the whole cop thing. Unless you're running around your apartment dressed like a ninja waving the AR around while all your window blinds are open and a neighbor sees you, I doubt you have anything to worry about

They have absolutely no clue what they are doing at Dick's. On top of their corporate policy that complies with imaginary gun control laws, they don't even have knowledge employees. Last time I purchased a gun there, the person behind the counter actually pulled out an ATF Form 4473 and seriously asked me "do you have to fill this thing out too?" Another clerk told me that 18.5" barrel shotguns are sold "specifically as home defense guns and buying them is totally different than sporting guns" :clap: Some real winners over there.

THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA DAMMIT and I dont give a F*CK what people think in Dicks or any other retail establishment or my Neighbors either for that matter! I am a law abiding,Hard working,Tax Paying UNITED STATES Citizen which intitles me to certain inalienable Rights! Simmer down sparky, all I'm saying is that most of the people that run this state would like to have you believe that guns are bad and that by owning them you are by nature doing something illegal. I dont think most would disagree that the state would probably disarm everyone in it if they could and they try to use fear to that end. Im not being "paranoid" or have "personal problems" im only intending to point out that alot of people dont just openly trust NJ police to know what the laws are. I find it shocking that you apparently believe every cop in NJ knows the firearm laws like the back of their hand and would never falsely arrest you for a gun they believe to be banned, even though it is not. I lived in a so called "free state" for 24 years and coming to new jersey there is an undeniable feeling here that they would like you to feel like you are a criminal if you own guns.
