Do you get project guns?

Recommended Posts

Does anybody else get project guns or guns that need a little TLC? I recently picked up a Winchester 1897 12GA that needed a little help to say the least. But I got it for $75.00, while a good 1897 runs about 500+. When I first got it the action was seized, and there is almost no bluing. The last 3" of the 36" barrel is corroded but the rest is nice. I got it with the intentions of cutting down the barrel and making a repro Trench Gun. win97-sm.jpg

A little work, and I got it already functioning. I shot it yesterday. I can already tell this is going to be one sweet little gun. Does anybody else recognize a diamond in the rough and look for projects.

Yes, I do as well. I look for something with a working action everything else is optional. I have a Stevens 22 that I got for 40 bucks and turned it into a practice project rifle. I reblued the metal, free floated the barrel, sanded, patched, checkered and finished the stock. I alsoInstalled a peep sight which included drilling and tapping the receiver. I also did work with the action, trigger and springs. It was a fun learning gun and I figured that I only lost forty bucks if I completely screwed it up. The only thing I need is a front sight riser. There are no front sights that sit high enough considering the peep sight I installed was not designed for that rifle. I need to chat with a machinest about a custom sight base, it hasn't been on the top of my list.

I have also restored some WWII rifles. I find it relaxing and enjoyable.

ive been trying to get a u-fix-em mosin lately. know where i can find one? ;)

Cabelas in Hamburg PA has them on sale for $99. They are Mosin Nagant 91/30's in 7.62x54r and come with ammo pouches, tool, cleaning kit, oil cans, sling and bayonet. They must have got a large surplus of them. I was up there on Friday and sold 3 while I was at the counter. Ofcourse I was one of the 3. For the price its a nice piece of history that actually functions. They are in very good condition also. the one I got was dated 1943.

    • So, as I interpret things, you get a hit on #1. It says nothing about feeding from said magazine, just that the magazine attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip. And it is attached. Was this what was considered when it was written? 100% no. However, this is NJ and I don't think they would give you an inch when as written it covers it in plain english.  #2 would be a hard yes if you put a threaded barrel on your setup, so I'd not do that.  #3... well it's not a shroud, but it does allow you to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned. Shroud is ill defined, and it could be argued to partially enshroud the barrel from the bottom. I would bet cash money that the AG would gladly say that second part there is to clarify the intent of the law and that since you can do that, you violated the stated intent of the law.
    • I don't know why we ( NJ gun organizations ) have not yet filed a lawsuit on "duty to inform"  A clear violation of the constitution 5th and probably 4th.  Maybe this guys lawyer will and get that charge dropped.  what other right do you need to inform a law enforcement officer of.    are you required to identify as a republican or democrat during an encounter, and by the way,  what constitutes an encounter.  voluntary? involuntary?   time to get this one knocked down. come on ANJRPC stop waiting for court decisions and go on the attack.
    • Right, each location will have a different set of Repeater frequencies you can use in your area.  You could also just have 2 sets of CHIRP files ready to go and make sure you have the ability to program them quickly in a SHTF situation.  Maybe dedicate at least one radio for each location with specific programming, and then when you get there you can re-program the radios you take with you with the programming specific to that location.   More expensive radios have the ability to program them via your phone app and BT connection.
