OBDOGS 3 gun match August 12, 2012

 

Sign up time is 9:30 and we will hopefully start shooting at 10:30. If you would like to come early and help set up, we could use you. Tom and I always meet at the Seville diner on rt 18 at 7am for breakfast.

 

OK, Here's the deal with the rules for the 3gun match.

 

First of all there will be no official score, you will have a score sheet and we will put your score on it but it's only for your own keeping. If you are shooting with a group, you can compare how well you did as a group.

 

We have decided to do this because there really isn't good scoring software out there using IDPA style scoring for 3 gun (please Jane, help us out). To try to use USPSA software would only complicate things more with the targets we use. When IDPA develops a scoring program then we will hold a match that abides by the IDPA rules. But until then here's how we are going to run this match......

 

Since there will be no official results posted it will pretty much be a "run what you brung" match.

 

1. There will be no classes or divisions.

 

2. You must have a Rifle, Shotgun and Handgun. There will be no sharing, if you don't have your own dedicated guns you can't shoot, don't ask. We tried that last year and it really slowed things down.

 

3. Rifles must be pistol caliber carbines or bigger. They must be semi auto or full auto (if you are allowed to have one in the state of NJ) No .22s. If you aren't sure call me. There will an option to table your rifle or let it hang so if you want to use a sling you can. if you have never done that, try to practice at home, there are plenty of youtube videos of transitioning to a handgun (Practice putting your safety on before letting it hang, it will prevent a DQ). Know your zero, we wont be shooting very far (40 yards max) but you will need to be accurate. All rifles will start with 10 rounds in the mag and 1 in the gun or less. All mags will be loaded to 10 max.

 

4. Shotguns must be 12 gauge pump or auto, bird shot only, number 6 shot or smaller i.e. 6,6.5, 7, 7.5 and so on. no slings for shotguns. All shotguns will start with 6 rounds or less.

 

Reloads for rifles and shotguns can come from anywhere on your body and you can carry as much as you want but you really wont need much per stage so don't go crazy carrying 30 rounds of shotgun shells. Figure on having 20 extra rounds of rifle and 20 shotgun at the start of each stage and you should be fine. Most of the time you wont be shooting both in the same stage.

 

5. Pistols must be 9mm or bigger semi auto or revolver. open guns, dots whatever you want as long as you are safe and reload it somewhat fast. It must be worn on the strong side hip or thigh and it must be secure. Again, if you aren't sure call me. Pistols will start with 10 in the mag and 1 in the chamber or less. All mags will be loaded to 10 rounds max.

 

FYI NJ has a 15 round limit on all magazines.

 

6. Safety rules. All the saftey rules you have ever heard of are in effect and will be explained in detail at the start of the match.

Being a club member at OBRPC for over a year I would have thought just MAYBE this info would be published somewhere. I do attend all the club meetings and this was not discussed.

 

I haven't even heard people talking about it until now.

 

If the club wants to keep these events on the down-low to limit attendance then they are doing a good job............

This is an IDPA match - most of the competitions keep their announcements to their own competition. You don't hear USPSA announcements at an IDPA match and vice versa generally

The main reasons that you haven't heard about it till now is that there isn't any representation from the League at the general membership meetings and no one from the League is writing anything for the club's newsletter. It's listed in the club newsletter as a regular Match, so the club knows that the pits will be used for the League. It's only the actual COF that's not indicated. In John's defense, he's been really busy finishing the Academy and doing other training as his new employer dictates. What John really needs is a Co-Chair who can step-up and run the whole thing without him. So far, that hasn't happened. So we need someone who will be there for almost every Match, who is dedicated and knows how to build Stages by the Rule book, and who isn't already a Match Director for another Club. Hard shoes to fill......

 

FWIW as a Discipline Chair, the first time I heard about this special Match was reading it here, the same as you.

 

The best advice I can give is to go shoot a Match from every discipline and get on every League's email list. Then you'll have first crack at the info as it comes from an email "blast".

Thanks Dave, now I understand. I have not had a chance to participate in an IDPA match yet. To be honest, I don't think I get any emails regarding up-coming USPSA matches either at our club yet I have participated in several. I do see threads started regarding the USPSA matches though on here and they are listed on our monthly calendar also.

 

What interests me about this up-coming IDPA match is that it is mutligun. I enjoyed our multigun "Zombie" match last year at OBRPC and wanted to do another one. This sounds like it should be similar but probably more stringent on the rules (shooting from cover, etc....), something I am not familiar with but can certainly learn!

I know what you're saying Mike. I've only participated in one 3-Gun Match my entire life, but speaking from experience of watching several, I can tell you that chamber-clearing and muzzle sweeping are two very important issues. IF you're going to use a Tac Sling, the best advice I have is to get used to wearing a long gun around the house. That way you'll have a chance to "get the bugs out" prior to Match day. You don't want to get DQ'd for some stupid crap mistake you wouldn't have made IF you only had a single gun to use! So put all of your stuff on and check it out and see how it works before you show-up to a Match and try to use it (but you already knew this, lol). Having never shot an IDPA Match, you'll be at a slight disadvantage in both scoring and rules/procedures. Learn or study how to do IDPA stuff like "slicing the pie", Tac Reloads, how to shoot while backing-up and other things. NEVER volunteer to be the first person to shoot a Stage, as any hidden DQ dangers will become apparent while others in front of you are doing their runs. The Rule Book is available on-line.

 

John is going to have a mandatory safety meeting to go over gun handling prior to the Match. This is in his email. Don't be afraid to ask questions--it could save you from a DQ!

All the clubs that hold matches have them on specific days every month.

Shongum 1st Saturday of Month

CJ USPSA 2nd Sunday

OB IDPA 2nd Sunday

Topton 3rd Sunday

Somerset IDPA 3rd Sunday

OB USPSA 4th Sunday

These are just a few of the matches that I know of that are held each month.

If there is a scheduling conflict and the match will be cancelled or held on a different day, the MD will let people know via email, match announcements, or website update.

What kind of sling is suggested for this? 1 point, 2 point 3 point???? I usually run my pistol on my hip but I could see where a sling would bump into that. So is thigh holster def the way to go?

No thigh holsters allowed. I will be using a 1-point sling. You can use your support hand to move your rifle out of the way safely. However, if you're unfamiliar with sling usage, I would recommend not using one - it's not necessary.
