Buying Ammo at Dicks???

Recommended Posts

I haven't bought any ammo at Dicks in a few years because I reload, but I just bought my first EBR and stopped there to pick up some .223 to try the rifle. They put the ammo in a plastic lock box to take up to the register, and the guy at the gun counter looked at my FID card and said, "Oh we don't do that anymore". No one asked me for ID...I paid for it and left.

My local shops still check DL and FID and write it in the book...what's going on at Dick's?

I just cant believe they make you put it in a lock box for it to be carried to the register. The Deptford Dicks... They check your firearms ID card regardless but the guy at the counter is cool. You can take a basket like you would use at a grocery store and walk freely after you are logged. Stopped in there Friday to pick up 10 boxes of the Federal Truball 12 ga and literally was handed them and told to have a good day. Guess that's the difference between the North and South Jersey stores

It is not required by law for rifle and shotgun ammunition. Only for handgun ammo. If a caliber is used in both, like 22LR, they put it under handgun ammo and require FID to buy it.

Is that right? CMO wrote me info down for buying a $23 box of simple standard Federal .308 FMJ with my new Rem 700 AAC-SD on Wednesday, (I hate Hate HATE the idea of having a firearm around with no ammo so even though it was brand new, no scope even, I had to buy some ammo just in case). I laughed but they did it anyway.

Dicks seems to be schizophrenic when it comes to ammo sales.

Some stores put the ammo in a plastic box. Some stores walk it to the register. Some stores ask for the FID for longgun ammo. Some stores don't.

The Mt. Laurel Dicks lets you walk around with shells. So does the Cherry Hill store. The Princeton store puts ammunition in a plastic box.

I think it it all depends on that store's loss prevention policy.

I guess it's just me, but I'd rather they walk it to the counter and let me continue shopping. They put the guns in the back for a reason... so I can wander around on my way to the register and consider impulse buying a new kayak or tennis balls for the dog. If you're at a Dick's that wants to walk it up for you, order the ammo, thank the guy hauling it up to the front and go about browsing. He doesn't need you to watch him walk to the front. And I don't need to be carting around 60lbs of shells while I decide if I need a new UnderArmor hat.

You can afford to buy ammo at DIcks?!? ;)

Even though you're "winking" I have to say that it's my first EBR and I don't know where to get .223- figured I had the best chance of picking up a few boxes as cheap as possible for the time being till I find online bulk. My cousin tells me he's reloading .223 and gets 2.5 times as much ammo for the same price. I do my own pistol ammo but haven't done any rifle. I guess I'll get there eventually.

You're a guitar guy right? Me too.

Go to the Cabelas web site and sign up for their e-mail flyers. They often have good sales combined with free shipping. You should be able to get a case of PMC 223 for $300 shipped when they have a sale. I know that's a big nut for all at once, but you definitely want bulk 223 laying around.

I have been using Sportmen's Guide, Cheaper Than Dirt, SG Ammo, and Lucky Gunner for online ammo.

I'd love to see the band, but I see you're down south... I'm way up NW.

I need to get back into/start a band, I miss it bad.

I shouldn't say "walk around" with shells, but I've never been escorted to the front of the store in Mt. Laurel or Cherry Hill. But then again 90% of the time when I'm shopping at Dicks, I'm on my way home from work and wearing a suit. I have noticed I tend to get treated differently pretty much everywhere when I'm in a suit than when I look like a 5.11 Catalog model.

Here's a different scenario.

Some 16 year old (?) kid in the sporting goods section at Walmart sells me some 9mm, hands me my bag, looks at my sidearm, and says, "Just please don't load up in the store."

I was like, "Are you kidding me?"

He said, "I figured you were already loaded, but it has happened."

That's Walmart's version of walking you to the register with your ammo :)

The Dick's store in Princeton is the worst shopping experience. I hate going there. They come up with some new stupid rule every time I go there and there is nobody there to help so it takes at least an hour to buy anything. Then when I get to the register it takes another 15min.

Went to look at shotguns there one day and the guy told me he needs to see my FID and DL before I can handle anything. He told me to leave them on the counter while I look at guns so that the camera can see my ID. All guns had trigger locks on them. Then he told me it was too late to get Nics and I should come back another day at least an hour before nics closes.

I used to go there to refill co2 tanks too. That is until I bought a digital scale. Guess what ... Found out I was paying for 20oz of co2 and they only filled it with 12oz.

I went to Dick's in PA and the shopping experience was great. I'd rather pay the $1 toll and drive a couple miles more. Good service gets my business. Already spent about $400 there last month.

You know, now that I think about it, Rays used to do the same thing with handgun/rimfire ammo, the salesman would bring it up to the register, you claimed your pile when it was time to check out.
