What 22 pistol should I buy

Recommended Posts

I'm assuming you mean the mark series? Cause the sr22 is very straightforward.

Oh yea I forgot about the sr22. Yea I meant the mark series guns.

I was also thinking of spending a few more bucks and getting a used colt woodsman. Those are really sweet guns too.

Try the Browning Buckmark. Solid, very accurate, fills the hand and STEEL. All in all a great pistol.

Another vote for the Browning Buck Mark. Solid build, metal and several variations available. Magazines have been easy to come by.

How old is this pistol?

Op the SR-22 is just hands down fun to shoot. If you want a tack driver Buckmark

Just wanted to thank you guys for mentioning the Browning Buckmark .22 pistol. I never heard of this gun so I did a little research and thought it could be what I'm looking for. I went to my local shop today asking if they had one to check out and they said they haven't had a new one in months but had a mint used one on the shelf that just came in. Once I held it it I was sold. Felt very solid and seemed extremely well built and fit and finish was superb. I compared it to a Ruger 22/45 they had but the Buckmark just felt so much better in my hand. I also liked the heavier weight of the Buckmark. Another shop was selling a used Colt Woodsman I was thinking about getting but that was about $200 more and the condition was much more used so I figure this would be a great starter .22 for now. I put a deposit on the Buckmark and will put in the NICS in about 3 weeks because I just bought a gun last weekend. Now I will be scouring the earth for .22 ammo and stock up so I can feed her next month.

You can't beat a Ruger 22/45. All around great gun. Swallows any type of ammo, lots of aftermarket parts. Put a Valquartsen trigger in it and you will be thrilled. Takedown is tricky but once you do it a few times its old hat. Get the threaded barrel and put the comp on it. Get a rail and a dot and you have one hell of a great open gun. iMHO

Is that what you decided on? The Sig 226?

Yes the sig 226 classic(22lr) You can convert it to 9mm and 40cal by just changing the slide and mags.

The sig 226 is a well built platform. I'm excited to add it to the collection.

But I cant find it in 22 lr. Its cheaper to buy it this way then 9mm and convert it to 22 lr.

Dont know I cant find one. But around $600 online. There is a sig 220 in 22 lr on GB right now for $529.

But I think the 220 can only convert to 45 and 357.

I have never seen a 226 in .22 in any store the past five months. Tons of Sig mosquitos and 1911 in the shops. Ask your local shop if they can locate a 226 for you.

I have found one online but all said and done it's a couple of hundred over it's historic(pre madness) price.

It's the same problem I had buying my M&P shield. Eventually members here helped me find one at a reasonable price.

I hoping the same thing happens with the sig.

What's the 226 chambered in 22lr costing new

I paid $579 for the 22 sig and $326 for the 40 cal x-change kit at my LGS. I got lucky, I had decided on one and went to my LGS to "talk" to them about it and get their opinion on the gun.....they had it in stock and told me if I really wanted it I better put a deposit on it. They had nothing but great things to say about it. They also had about 3 or 4 sig 226 in 9mm and all were $1,100+ (BUT, there are many different combinations on sig 226's) so going this route for me was cheaper. Sadly, I'm still waiting for my permits since 2nd week of Jan so I can't tell you how it shoots.....yet.

Just got a new stainless Ruger Mark III Target today... thought about upgrading to the Hunter, but didn't feel like spending an extra $200 today. The target should be fine. Especially after I put some different grips on it, and maybe a red dot optic. Anyway, can't wait to get it in my hands!

Varna, I am curious how well the gun functions when converted to 40 from 22lr. My next purchase will be a 40 but if this option is reliable and functions well I might have to go this route.

It is 100%.  Have been shooting a p226 22lr with 40 and 9 x-change kits for some time. Functions just like a new 40 or 9 with those slides.  And it usually works out cheaper than buying the 40 or 9 p226 by itself initially.

I would get a Ruger 22/45 Lite with a 4" barrel .. best of both worlds... reliable Ruger Mark action, light weight, accurate, dependable, backed by Ruger, lots of aftermarket parts, upgrades, etc...  If I could only have ONE .22LR, it would be a Stainless Steel Ruger Mark II with a 5.5" bull barrel.   This new Mark III is sweet, too, with a catalog * of KMKIII512H.

But, for versatility, or to carry, etc., the 22/45 Lite would be my first choice, especially if I was fond of the 1911-style grip, or if I wanted something lighter for family members.  My only problem with it is the cost and long-term durablity, especially when compared with the roughly equally priced all-steel ones.  So, even though I want one, its not a good value to me.  I personally would rather have an all-steel one, instead.  And magazines are easier to find for the regular Marks.  If these aluminum slide ones were going for around $325, they would be an incredible bargain, but at $450 or more, they are not.  It works well, but the only thing I am not too crazy about is the front sight... needs a nice red fiber optic one installed, and it might be fun to customize the grips.

That said, my favorite .22LR to shoot is hands down the M&P 22.  It might not be as accurate as 22LR Target guns... Ruger Marks, etc., but it just feels good, is quite reliable, and is fun to shoot.

The SR-22 is nice, but I am not sure if its a keeper.  The trigger is kind of crappy and it feels more like a stapler.  I have medium-size hands and the large grip feels tiny.  But, if it is reliable and compact, then it has versatility and the sights are nice for a small gun. If the 22/45 Lite wasn't a lot more, there wouldn't be any consideration.

The SIG 1911-22 feels good in the hand, but I cannot get past the cheaper metal it is made of, although it seems quite durable.  If it was aircraft aluminum, I would not have sold mine.  However, I also don't like the fact that you need an allen key to disassemble and it is very hard to get the barrel out of the slide to clean (at least on mine) as it has very tight tolerances and the finish is easily scratched.  Also, it has really crappy sights, but I am sure they can be upgraded and maybe the trigger can be polished a little.

Another option is to get a nice .22LR revolver.  Everyone should have a double-action .22LR revolver.  Ruger SP101, S&W 317 http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_765497_-1_757768_757767_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y, , S&W 617, Taurus 992 (versatile with .22LR and .22WMR).

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
