Philly PD loses M16

Recommended Posts

"The department received the gun and 1,356 other fully-automatic M16s from the federal government in 2009 and the guns were being converted into semi-automatic AR-15 rifles. A regularly-scheduled audit, the first since December 2012, showed that one weapon was"

Govt giving them 1,356 full auto rifles.. must be nice

Why would they be taking 1300 Vietnam era M16s to covert them into semiautos?  This makes no sense. That picture is not even an A1, it's a slab side.

I was wondering the same thing about the conversion. I don't think they expect anyone to know the difference in the pic. Probably googled m16 and picked the first thing that popped up.

Not sure why the Philly PD thought they needed 1357 M16's, but that question aside, I'm surprised they only lost one over the past 4-5 years. Not excusing it, but cynical me would have predicted a lot more than that would have walked off.

Being free i don't think that bothered them.  Most military small arms are carried a lot and shot little as I'm sure you know.

I suppose it's possible, but it doesn;t make any sense.  They have plenty of other peoples' money for ARs.

And all the arms I carried in the military were shot to hell.  We didn't spend our weeks painting decks and they didn't teach us how to cook in OSUT.

I was issued two brand new weapons from 1967 to 2009. The first was a M16E1 as a SP4 in Vietnam and the other a M9 about 1991 as a Major.

I don't understand why they would convert them to semi.

I'm sure they didn't want to spend the time or money training everyone how to shoot full auto. Not a big issue as the uses for full auto in LE are very limited. If you wanted a full auto weapon issued in the agency I worked for you first had to be an expert shooter at a minimum and complete 3-4 long days of training. Add to that at least 1000 rds plus a year to maintain proficiency. All of that is expensive even for the Federal government.

The coast guard at the point pleasant station "lost" an M-16 years ago.

One of the results was that the "law enforcement" guardsman were not allowed weapons while on patrol.

That all backfired when they responded to reported a woman screaming tor help on Treasure Island one night and they couldn't go ashore because they had no weapons. No balls either.

The assailant was only armed with a knife. And the woman was assaulted.
