Carrying... How to deal with kids?

Recommended Posts

My dad started carrying just yesterday. OWB with a hoodie currently since he can get away with it in the current weather.

We were at Walmart and I believe a small kid maybe 5-6 saw his Sig when he got his wallet. Pretty sure I heard him say something to his dad that the man had a gun or something like that. Either way, we paid and went home. No issue.

That being said, how do you handle kids if you scare them with a gun? I really don't know what the proper thing would have been to do. Obviously, if they have uber liberal parents you should just walk away. If I'm carrying I'm not going to lecture kids or whatever, but it would be nice if I could quickly say something to diffuse the situation.

Teenagers are a lost cause, and adults are hit or miss. You may be able to have a calm discussion about it. Kids get scared easily and it would be nice to let a kid know people who own guns are normal.

Not trying to be a dick because one day it might happen to me but obviously he can't get away with it. Could have easily been a parent, teenager or whoever bending down to get gum. Regardless I don't think most kids will get scared. I'd imagine it'd scare an adult first. I find OWB more comfortable but not comforting when trying to conceal. I just always feel one wrong move you're flashing the world.

I'd say the solution to this situation is avoiding it all together. If the goal is concealed carry then the firearm should be concealed, not concealed until you reach for your wallet, or sit in a chair, or bend over to pick something up, or whatever.

I've been staring at this reply for like 5 mins. It's probably so true, then yet i think that would eliminate about 80% of the shirts I wear. I don't really wear "long" shirts. So then I guess I'd be relegated to appendix carry because I really couldn't think of clothing that wouldn't guarantee it peaking out when I sat down.

Good reply.

Finding the right carry system for each individual is the key....as well as a bit of dressing around the carry......in that wearing "jersey shore" cap sleeve tight T-shirts/stretch wife beaters etc are not going to ever conceal a weapon well...

Who gives a shit about these worthless little shitbag kids. I carry everywhere, including church, & I do not care if some little retard kid or the parents see that I have a gun on my belt, or on a shoulder holster. It is none of their business, esp if they are a bunch of libtards. if they do see the gun & ask, I will just tell them that I am a plain clothes police officer with the federal gov't, DHS!

Looks like you'd need to buy new clothes. For me specifically, I wear baggy clothes to begin with, but a dark dickies button down work shirt conceals well.

No, USA. Pennsylvania, specifically.

Edit: he isn't trying to conceal specifically. Even if he was, stuff happens.

If he's going to open carry thats his choice but he should expect to constantly have attention drawn to him. Note that he's been carrying for one day and he's already had a kid say "look a man with a gun!".

PA is not TX. People are not open carrying everywhere there. I would just tell anyone(kid, teenager, or adult) it's a tool for your job. Whether you are lying or telling the truth doesn't matter. It will diffuse the situation and if it doesn't, walk away.

What happens if a cop sees your weapon if you ebbs to get something. What is the penalty if it's supposed to be concealed?

For PA, so long as you're not in a prohibited place, nothing. PA issues a Licence To Carry a Firearm and does not stipulated concealed. Open carry is legal everywhere but you need a LTCF in Philly.

I guess this answer depends where you are - when I took the FL concealed carry course, the instructor said that it is your duty to keep it concealed in FL, and if this isn't done you can be charged with brandishing.

"he isn't trying to conceal specifically."

Honestly, he should pick one and stick to it.

The accidental transition from concealed to showing probably freaks people out more than open carry.

I tend to agree with this ...

Open carry is illegal in TX ;)

I am more worried about concealing in the warmer weather.  Right now I wear vests all the time and it works well.  Guess I will need to get some of those 50's shirts this spring.

I have no problem concealing in normal fitting tshirts/polos....ranging from subcompact to small full size

With a whopping 4 posts I'd suspect a troll.

You carry at Church; meaning you attend Church.  Perhaps you should spend more time and energy learning patience, understanding and a little bit of "love thy neighbor".

You have the wrong attitude as a firearms owner.

You have the wrong attitude as a believer in God.

You say you would/have impersonated a federal officer?

I would ask the parents if they minded if I answered the kids question.  If they gave me permission, I'd get on a knee and told the kid I carry when I'm allowed to protect myself and my family and that there a lot of bad people in the world.

If the parents would object I would have still say it carry to protect myself from bad people and leave it at that.

IWB? On the hip? Can't be rear of the hip because perhaps back of a tshirt or polo shirt might just show a smidge of your back when you sit down. Unless your Ts are really long.

Yes I know, dress to carry, just never ever considered the wardrobe befor because I knew in NJ I would never be allowed but it's still good to think about it. Sitting down I would guess is the make or break decision about clothes or comfort.

When I ccw it's a crossbreed iWb with the clips about middle of the options..with additional cant...in 4-430 ish position...my shirts are normal size .. Not extra long or anything...when I sit my shirts don't show my back...or the pistol......although if I were to bend over at the waist to pick up something off the floor it would undoubtedly print ..if I'm in a situation which requires discretion I stoop ...lol

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
