Bad news about the range/gun shop in Monroe (Middlesex)

Recommended Posts

The shooting range will be going in as planned, but the retail store has been denied.

I dont understand what the big fight is over.. the gun range is already going in there... guns are coming and going. Im sure theyll be rentals and ammo sales so having some additional inventory shouldnt be such a big deal.

wow that sucks...  just to think of all the effort put into it in the 1st place.  at least the range was approved...  seems like there is more danger with the range then a gun shop though.  I dont get it, wont people just drive an extra 15 mins down the road to buy it from someone else but still end up in the town that denied them in the 1st place?  so stoooooopid

Monroe residents as a whole are feverishly anti-development. They had been a farm town for so long that commercial construction over anything is fought by the locals it affects. Point in case, there is not one typical fast food establishment (sans subway, does that really count?) in the 44 sq miles of the municipality.

And you know what? Why move forward with the range? I wouldnt want to bring revenue to that town if they pulled that shit with me.

Why not? the more places to shoot the better, and after a year or two the (more rational) people opposed to the store will see that people coming and going legally with guns is not a problem and will not have a valid argument to base their opposition to the store on anymore (not that they really have one now). The range owner could then try again to get a store in there.

Okay now which range is this? The one approved about 2years ago that was supposed to go in on Mott Ave or the one that Ira from Legend is putting up?

Damn! As a private club concept not being able to subsidize membership $'s with ammo and gun sales/rentals may put a serious strain on the existing business plan.

Perhaps this is why we haven't heard anything further about the planned public range that Tarantino got approval in 2011.

Forgive me it was in fact the Mott ave range. Just saw her previous post trying to bang the war drums for support

Still doesn't bode well for Ira I should think.....

Once the range opens and operates uneventfully for a while, they will probably revisit the gun shop.  At least having a range there is a foot in the door.

Agreed but I'm attempting to put myself in the proprietor's and investor's shoes....In essence they spending what can prove to be a substantial amount of resources on the hope that the township will acquiesce in the future......Clearly an expensive gamble.

Selfishly I do hope both gets built but realistically I foresee a revisiting of their respective feasibility studies.

I'm from Monroe and despite the efforts of many it's already developed way more than we would have liked to see (and all the surrounding areas too). However it's one shop/range that would be going in. I'd hardly call that "development". There's strip malls and housing developments everywhere now ...I think it's either someone's not "greasing the skids" or they're afraid a gun range isn't so PC in this climate. I wish I knew when the meeting was ...I could've gotten some people to turn out to support it. I would've been preaching about it at my bands gigs in the area too - tons of people from Monroe come out to see us.

Thing is, the range is approved. They just won't let them sell firearms or ammo,

Ira from Legends Firearms posted this on facebook in case anyone was confusing his range and store for this one

For any of you that might have seen in the paper about a new proposed gun store in Monroe getting shot down, that's not my place. I already have my approval, this was for a guy that had a public range approved in Monroe about 18 months ago. He wanted to add a store. My range/store approval is already done. We are currently waiting to get on the next zoning board agenda for site plan approval. If you haven't signed up for the preconstruction discount, you still have time. Go to unionhillgunclub.com and sign up!

hi all. my name is dave and i am the son of the family building the range on Mott avenue. to calm everyone's nerves, the gun shop did get denied however the range has already been approved. our plan is to go ahead and build the range with or without sales. sadly at the meeting, there were some concerned residents who brought up things that were 100% not relevant to the variance. the scenarios the residents brought up were absolutely incredible. one of them which still makes me laugh is "what happens when 2 people are racing through my development because they both want to be the first person at the range and one cuts the other off. they get out of their cars and start shooting at each other in my development with kids around, and I promise you that will happen!"

all that being said, we are moving forward with the range project and you guys can look forward to Recoil Shooting Range in Monroe NJ hopefully sooner rather than later. we will update everyone on progress as well as when our next meeting will be, clearly we need all the support we can get. please feel free to ask questions through private message or in this thread.

Thank for the update...I for one have been scouring the local papers searching for any progress after your petition was approved some 2 years ago and there are quite a few like me in Monroe/and surrounding towns. Please keep us up to date and as I live not 5 minutes away fully expect to be a member.

    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
