NJ Bounty Hunters

Anyone here a bounty hunter..

I seen on the State Police website about the bounty hunter license, and it was interesting. I wonder if you are allowed to carry, but I guess considering your either retired or have had at least 5 years in law enforcement you would be able to carry regardless.

But seems to pay pretty good, up to 50k per apprehension. wow...

If I got laid off as a police officer I would look into this

The retired officer permit requires a minimum of 15 years of service for a carry permit, or a minimum of four years if retiring due to disability. Merely serving on a police dept for five years does not necessarily get you a carry permit.

To be licensed as a bounty hunter, you have to have a minimum of five years in law enforcement. That license does not automatically grant a right to carry; you need a separate carry permit to do that, under the justifiable need standard.

The bounty hunter license requirement is fairly new (only about four years old). Prior to that, anyone could say they were bounty hunters; it all depended on whether the bail bondsmen wanted to hire them. Part of the reason for the change was that many "schools" were teaching bounty hunter courses with no standards or oversight. At least one school, who convinced their students that their certificates were legally valid, taught that it was legal to force their way into homes and/or assault people who were suspected of hiding bail jumpers. There was also at least one incident where bounty hunters apprehended the wrong person and were later charged with kidnapping.

I remember just before this law went into effect, I was at the Willowbrook mall and saw a guy wearing a bail agent shirt. He looked about 18 (if that), and was also wearing a utility belt with handcuffs and an expandable baton. Of course, he was only at the mall to strut around and make himself look like a tough guy.

why the hell would you have to be a cop for five years to be a bounty hunter? Im sure this is just another dumb a** jersey law. Im sure the DOG was not a cop.

And if you had seen firsthand some of the Serial ASSHATTERY these Morons have accomplished bothe here and in other states... The Kidnapping and Dumping of the Victim once they realized they had the wrong woman, and several Deaths, with ZERO accountability on the part of the Bounty Hunters...yeah i dont see this as a BAD thing. I've had them in the past kick the wrong doors, grab the wrong people, and do things that as a COP would land me in jail..only to have a complete walk beacuse of a SCOTUS decision that dates back to the early 19th century.

I am not saying they should not require training and background checks. But being an ex leo does not necessarily mean they can do it better.
