How to tell M&P from Pro to Regular

I have been looking at the SW mp series HG and was thinking of getting one. How do you tell the difference between the standard and the Pro series? I have looked on thier site and the listings in the Pro series don't say Pro on them for the M&P.

I think the Pro series can be fired without the magazine in the gun. The standard model normally comes with the mag safety. The Pro has a warning that the gun can be fired without the magazine in.

Honestly, I would get a standard model, remove the mag safety if you don't want it there, then get the APEX Tactical kit and install it yourself. The Pro is a lightly polished up version of the standard M&P. The consensus is that it the Pro is not worth it because it is still not a great finished product for the extra money you spent on it over the basic model. Better to spend the difference on a kit that will improve it by leaps and bounds.

True dat, plus if it has a 5" slide and its not labelel "L" its a pro.

 

I don't know why S&W doesn't have "Pro" in the descriptions but if you click on it you can see the wording on the slide in the picture.

 

And in regards to the mag safety, you can get a regular without that, you just have to make sure you have the right SKU. A non-pro will come with and without a thumb safety, with and without a mag safety. Mine is without/without.

I just received a response from a price request saying these are not NJ legal guns because they are 19 round capacity. I thought they were 17 (according to S&W site). Can't the mags be made NJ legal?

They make 10 rounders for all of us living in low cap states.

The 19/17 rd mags are illegal. The gun is legal and those mags can't be sold with the gun. I got mine from A-n-A with 2 blocked @ 15 and then got some extra 15rd mags from G & R Tactical.

Pro will have:

 

Either a regular or the long slide with "Pro" on it.

No Mag disconnect, will go bang with no mag in gun (dryfire it as others mentioned) (although some did come without mag disconnect iirc)

Fiber optic novak sight in front (big green dot)

Trigger is different, does not suck as much.

Buy the regular m&p 9 without mag safety, which comes with 10 round mags and then put the Apex DCAEK in it. The only thing the Pro gives you over this is night sights, which really aren't that big of a deal.

 

The Apex DCAEK will give you a sweet trigger. I just recently bought the regular m&p 9, and did this and LOVE it!

I have the pro series in .40 cal. Love it. No mag disconnect , no internal lock , no safety besides the trigger safety , the trigger is nice and crisp. I have the 5 inch version , says Pro on the slide. Capacity is 15 + 1 .

There are non-pro versions that do not have the magazine disconnect. You can identify a Pro by the "Pro Series" marking on the slide.

 

The Pro has a slightly better trigger than stock and a fiber optic sight for a little more money. However as others have pointed out the Apex sear is better than the Pro sear and I think there are better sight options than those on the Pro. So in my opinion I'd rather get a regular M&P and install the Apex parts and sights of my choice.

yep, the no magazine disconnect is an option on all the models, and even if you have one, you can get it removed

Any of the M&P's that don't have a magazine safety will have that writing...

 

I didn't know people needed to be warned the gun will fire if there is a round in the chamber and the trigger is pulled.

The 9L's are getting impossible to find. S&W stopped making them when they realized people were buying them for $150 less than the Pro models and just sending them off for custom work or installing APEX parts. The Pro is nothing special. It has FO sights and a "worked" trigger that is still crap IMO. But if you want a 5" barrel in an M&P, it's the only game in town now.

The pro it will have to be then. I want the 5" barrel, and the FO is gravy as I also want that, but will be upgrading the trigger. Its a shame on the slide writing.
