9mm 1911's

Recommended Posts

So, did a Buy It Now for a S&W 1911 on Gunsamerica last week and got an email they have no stock. Two days later they remove the add, thanks!

Now I'm looking to see what else is out there. Didn't want to spend $1500 for the S&W, maybe Steve will trade for a 610?  ;)

Anyway, what else is there? I saw a Kimber Stainless 2, know nothing about that model, but it is a 1911 in 9mm.

Dan Wesson makes one, Springfield Armory has one. I prefer bright stainless, not too interested in blued guns.

Two weeks before I can use the next PPP, so I have time to look-around.

I can't make it this Sunday, but thanks for the offer!

Steves S&W is ok, not shiny enough, but not too bad either. I have seen good and bad on the newer Kimbers.

Maks, I think the STI's tend to be blued guns, right? What was your 1911 9mm, was it a S&W? You let me and my wife try it a few years ago at OBRPC.

Maks is a smith and wesson..  i would stick to one of these 3 smith, Kimber or STI..

The smith and Kimber are both SS  the kimber is mag Picky i ran the wilsons but had to do alot of work to the mags and ended up buying kimber mags in the end the wilsons were running good but then i wore them out and rather than rebuild them i purchased the kimbers and they run flawless 9 rounds over the 10rnd wilsons you lose that one round with the kimber mags..I really like the kimber mine is the team 2. I had to replace the extractor at 1200 rnds i had to keep setting the tension i check it every time i clean my 1911's it started dropping too low replaced it with an ed brown match extractor.

the smith runs with the wilsons just have to cut one spring off to fit that 10th round without binding on a reload with one in the chamber had to do this with the kimber too...The smith and wesson pro is a great gun it works and is set up for the wilson mags.

If you bump to the trojan you can get it chromed would suggest the dawson precision comp ready 100.00 you get added benefits chroming is on top of that which puts it in the 1500. range.

The only thing I would trade my Smith for is the same gun with adjustable sights or maybe a Dan Wesson PM9. The Smiths are a bit high in price right now, that's about what the DW's were going for when I got mine. The Springer is really nice but can be a little finicky. Of course Springfield would make it right but who wants to send a gun back and forth until they get it right. The finish on the sti is crap, unless you get it hard chromed which puts you right back in the same price range as the Smith and DW. Fugg it, get a Wilson or Nighthawk. It's only money.

I have a Kimber 9mm and it runs like a champ.  I have about 6000 rounds thru it and have not had any issues except when I try and get cheap with powder and don't load it with enough ooomph.  Great gun and crazy accurate.  Handles really well and looks great.  I love mine.

9mm 1911 recoil is VERY manageable.

Good luck.

I own and carry a Colt 1911 9mm. However, it is a 3" barrel with an aluminum frame which makes it great for ccw but not the best choice for the range although it is a good shooter. Some hate the Hogue Rubber grips but they are excellent for a fighting gun.

Definitely get the Trojan from Dawson. For the money, it just cant be beat in terms of features, quality and reliability. The trojan is superior to the spartan in that its a ramped barrel vs a ramped frame (Better for feeding 9mm and .40 and better support for higher pressure cases), better blued vs phosphate finish, nicer machining, and better fit/finish. The spartan is still a great gun and a fantastic value if you want a lower priced workhorse shooter. I have a trojan in 9 and spartan in 45 and both run flawlessly. Kimber and Springfield, specifically with thier 9's, dont have the same reputation. Second choice is the Smith as its also an excellent gun but its priced quite a bit higher than the STI although you do get stainless steel as a feature. Seems to be only available in the pro series which means a slick gun, but at a price. Know that some of its parts are proprietary, even being a 1911 which may or may not be an issue if you're just going to leave it be (which, as a massaged pro series, you should just be able to do).

Ok, now that I am at a laptop....

I have had the Smith Wesson 1911 Pro Series, 9mm.  They are all stainless, external extractor.  Throughout the years, they did have a few changes.  The 9mm pro has a magwell, the 45 acp pro does not.  You actually get a very good value for the gun in 9mm.

Sights are standard 3 white dot sights, which I have actually blacked mine out, and will soon replace with fiber front, black rear.

The gun itself has been flawless through somewhere to the neighborhood of 10k rounds? give or take. more importantly,  I have shot it from local ranges, to local matches, all the way to USPSA area championships, in the dead of winter, through heat of summer.

The gun itself is uber reliable.  It came with 2 wilson 9mm mags which are good, but the only sticking points.

1. The mags have a plastic follower, which over time will wear, break/ etc.

2. The mags are 10 rounds, and on a closed slide, to start 10+1, are fairly hard to seat.  I cut off 1 coil off of the spring, and they have been significantly better.

3. Some people I know have had issues with the wilson mags, having the follower stick near the mag release notch.

4. The gun is as reliable as the mag.  The only failures I have had with the gun, mostly failure to feeds, have been as a result of dirty mags, and well, I did not clean mags every time they hit the ground until I started shooting an SVI 2011.

Back to gun, positive extraction every time.  Smith support is very good, and it is worth every penny of the $1300 or so I paid for the gun brand new.  One of the only guns I bought new. It truly is one of those guns that you can buy, and don't have to do anything to. (ok ok... it does have about a 5 lb trigger, so I would lighten it up if all you shoot are guns with 2.5 lb triggers.)

Other choices would be Dan Wesson PM9.

Springfields are nice, but along with STI's, I have seen those guns have issues, and they are not stainless.  Kimbers I have seen run well, and others that have massive issues.  I think the Smith 1911 is the only 9mm 1911 that everyone I know that bought one, the gun just runs.

Hope that helps.  I can bring it out if you want to shoot it.

+1 to what Maks said. Except for clipping the spring on the mags. Just get some Tripp Cobra mags, they are 10 round and seat no problem. Shiny is definitely overated. You remember this gun, you know you liked it.

Oh, and if you want to trade that 610, I'll trade you a gen4 G23, trijicon HD night sights, 8 mags, like new.

Thanks to all for their advice and opinions. I am pulling the trigger on the Dan Wesson, simply to have something different. Heck, it's going to get Bluelined anyway, like so many other guns I have.............. Sorry Joe, had to say it.  :)

The S&W's will always be around, may get one for the wife next year, if I can get her to leave the 92FS in the safe. She did like Maks S&W last year.

I do like those STI's, could be on the list for next year also.

When can we expect to see this DW at a steel match?

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
