Trap shooting - a first attempt

Recommended Posts

Andrew B was nice enough to take me out trap shooting this weekend for a first try.  I had never even touched a shotgun before, so this was a very new experience.  He taught me how to correctly hold the gun and I learned quite a bit.  Unfortunately, before I learned to do it correctly I also learned how not to do it correctly.  Fortunately it looks much worse than it feels :)

If you shoulder it correctly , your whole body absorbs the recoil and you should not really need a limbsaver. Shy is about 4'9 ( 2 inches shorter than I ) . The gun is too long for her , but she still shoots it pain free because it is tucked right into her armpit . She can't have an adjustable stock on her Beretta 12 g because it is a semiauto. If you watch the video you see her REALLY concentrate on getting it into her shoulder hollow ( is that what you would call it?)

Poor Howard!  I saw ya Sunday at Old Bridge for the Steel Match.  Shotgun League was right next to the Pits.  I could have given you a 5 minute lesson with a friend's scattergun so you would have avoided such a bruise, and then you could have continued with the steel match uninterrupted.  And I'd still be able to shoot my black powder match.  Next time just ask and I'll be glad to help!  Just because I wear a pair of Colt Smokewagons doesn't mean I can't learn ya how to knock clay birds outta the sky, lol!

Thanks Dave, but I earned these colors on Saturday - and it did not keep me away from Static yesterday! ;)

I've burned through at least 20 cases of shotgun ammo in the past 6 years and hunted with a shotgun since the 70s.   I don't need to have a limbsaver and I know how to shoulder my shotguns.   The difference between "feeling it" and feeling nothing at all after 3-4 rounds of trap or skeet is what a limbsaver does for you.

Sheeesh, Howard, just what you need - another expensive hobby. Priced any Krieghoff's?

I think Howard has ADHD.

Funny you should mention that.  As I pulled out my D800e to take some pictures at the steel match yesterday a friend made the comment that my cheapest hobby is probably the RC Quad copter.

Yes, it's worth the money.

Easiest way to avoid a bruise is to just use the pistol grip in the stock and shoot the 3 Dram or less load using a strong-hand ONLY technique like I do.  It's easy to do with low brass.........

Seriously, yes I can break birds with strong-hand.  I can break LOTS of birds if I use both hands and a shoulder (doesn't matter which side).  It's all about getting used to gun handling and gun fit!

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in
    • I use an Alien Gear cloak tuck (IWB) with my Shield.  Neoprene back - in the summer it does feel warm but doesn't rub or chafe.   https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-iwb-holster.html Could also go with the shapeshift as it has multiple options - OWB/IWB, Appendix... https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-shapeshift-modular-holster-system.html
    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
