New Gun Safe

I need a gun safe for my house. I have a small collection of pistols (7) and a few rifles (3), and would need all but my SHTF piece to fit in there. I would like to spend under $300 if possible. Any suggestions? I live in Atlantic Highlands (next to Sandy hook) and am willing to drive and pick it up or order it over the internet and have it delivered. There have been a few burglaries in the nearby neighborhood and I want my guns to remain mine.

I've seen the following safe - it's good, but imo he's asking too much, plus it really is 1555 lbs, he's got industrial scales as he's a metal recycler... And it's been on Craigslist since like March so he may take less for it.

Last time I was in Tractor Supply they had a couple of gun safes. I don't remember the brand, but I think the price range was right around where you need to be.

If you want a locking cabinet... dicks this week has a 14 gun cabinet for $129 I believe, this is down from $200 regular price.

I have one of those stack on models from dix. An adult would not be able to get into them without a prybar or a drill in my opinion. They are somewhat secure, but do not offer nearly as much protection as a real safe.

I doubt a locking cabinet will due much for a thief with some time. The safe I have a thief could probably get into in a few minutes, but for me its more about keeping little fingers off the guns.

Yeah, exactly...it really depends on what your needs are. I have a Liberty National Security, Kept outside of my home, for valuables

 

I keep that stack on cabinet in my home for my firearms, just to keep little hands out, but I will probably end up getting another Liberty for my house. I dont know,....I havent made up my mind yet.

I've been researching this subject for awhile now. A gun cabinet it not fire or theft protection. At most the walls are made of 14 gauge metal and could be broken through with a sledge hammer or axe. It would suffice to keep kids out, but not a thief with the slightest determination.

at first i realized i needed a gun safe.. BEFORE i purchased any guns.. im just careful like that..

 

then i started to look HOPING to pick up something in that range.. 300-500

 

it was really frustrating.. i finally settled on a safe that was around a thousand dollars.. expensive.. but its too heavy to move.. will keep just about anyone out without major tools.. and is fire proof.. also realizing this is a ONE time purchase..

 

as much as it sucked spending that much.. i feel a LOT better knowing my stuff is stored in that..

Just be careful with those 'gun safes'. Often the cabinet is 12 gauge steel (0.1046" thick).

 

Be aware that Kett makes a tool to cut 12 ga.

Don't wast your time cheaping out with a "cabinet". You will eventually get a real safe so you might as well start there. This is from personal experience. By the time i finished welding stuff onto a cheap Stackon and bolting it to the wall, I could have just bought a good one. Lowe's has them for $400.

I doubt it is fireproof. After having a friend go through a recent house fire that totally destroyed his home, one of the few items surviving was the fireproof safe. Slight moisture managed to find it's way inside but the firearms were still in great shape and needed only a good cleaning.

 

Our club picked up three safes from Sam's Club for $600 each. They have electronic locks which can be a problem at times but the safes do what we need them to do which is store firearms and are somewhat fireproof. The fire angle was not an issue as they are in a block and poured concrete building.

 

If moving the safe is an issue, look into these safes. Several members bought them on a group buy and were extremely happy with them. They are not cheap but well built and easier to move than most.

Lowe's sell gun safes too $300-$400 range made by Sentry

According to their website they have two long gun safes available. One is 20 CF for $697, the other is 12 CF for $397.

 

While much better than cabinets, these safes appear to have a 20 min fire rating @ 1200 - 1400. Keep in mind that unless its UL tested, many independent testers start the timer when they start the fire. It may take 10 mins for a slow burning fire to reach 1200 - 1400 degrees leaving this safe ok to burn for up to ten mins.

 

National average small home house fire is around 27 mins.

 

 

Again, these safe's are still better than cabinets which offer NO fire protection, and very little burglary protection. But are they good for the long haul?
