my apologies.. but I will personally continue to refer to my firearms as weapons.. I am not a competition shooter... nor a hunter.. I carry a gun (when legally allowed) to defend myself.. as in shoot someone who is trying to cause me great harm.. every gun I owned is derived from a LEO or MIL platform.. so for me.. personally... they ARE weapons.. again.. apologies f that goes against the grain..

That's an NRA hang-up. At a recent NRA Basic Pistol class, they referred to it as the "W" word, and we were not allowed to use that term.

What a waste of time, since ALL firearms can be used in combat ala "A 22 in your hand is better than a 357 in your safe". Even by that definition, aren't all guns, "weapons"?

I have dedicated firearms which are not intended to be used defensively but as a game piece. But guess what?

 

If an unfortunate situation was to arise, that game piece would turn into a weapon pretty quickly.

Yeah screw that. They're weapons plain and simple. If someone is offended by that, whatever. I'm pretty sure if the only weapon I owned was a Marlin 60 or other .22 rifle meant for target shooting, I wouldn't hesitate to defend my life with it if the situation were to arise.

I agree with the NRA here, BUT the moment you turn an ordinary tool into a defensive tool it becomes a weapon. ie, a kitchen knife is used to cut meat or bread but God damn it if I gotta stick someone with it then it becomes a weapon.

No problem Harry. I had mixed feelings about the NRA definition. I hate the PC bs, but we've had a discussion in the past where some felt we shouldn't refer to our firearms as weapons. They are tools, they are sporting equipment, etc.

 

The anti-gunners like to use the word weapon, always in a negative light.

 

As Ray Ray said, almost anything can be turned into a weapon depending on how it is used.

 

Is a baseball bat a weapon? Is tire iron a weapon? Is a car a weapon? We don't refer to these things as weapons, but everyone of them can be used as one.

I agree a Guns is a gun until it's use to defend or cause harm to someone and then it becomes a weapon, as could be said about may objects.

For me, it has always been the intent at the moment.

When I was in the military, it was a rifle. When I had the intent to use it in a manner of high discrimination, it was a weapon (the same could be said about my fists, sidearm, spork, AT4, e-tool, Gerber, MRE-pound cakes, etc.)

In most cases, as a civilian, the guns I own are just that. God forbid I ever have to use them in a manner of self defense against two or four legged intruders, it will be a weapon.

But I don't see those words holding good or bad meanings, just different descriptions for different moments.

I don't own any guns that would be geared primarily towards target shooting.. obviously I target shoot often... but the guns I own primarily follow the lines of a "weapon" not that I ever want to use them that way.... just saying..

This is my new setup for the home defense handgun. I've stepped up from a Taurus M85 with the XD 45 tactical. I mounted the laserlyte bi-rail so I could use both the Streamlight TR1 and the new Ka-Bar pistol mounted knife. It's extremly sharpe and comes with a little plastic sheath. The setup does add some weight to the pistol but I'm not carrying it all day and the weight is on the front end to it would keep the barrel down for faster follow-up shots. I was wondering if anyone else has one or thought about getting one. I love it alot. It is functional but some might think a little too tactical, no?
