Doctor or Psychiatrist Letter for gun permit

I’m in the process of applying for a gun permit and was told I need a letter from a doctor or pyschiatrist that holds a MD. Dr. Pirelli has been mentioned in other posts but won’t do because he doesn’t have a MD. Is there a doctor or psychiatrist that does this type of evaluation? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Is this to do with something specific in your history, or a general requirement from your PD that they demand from every applicant? If its the latter, they are way outside what is allowed by law.

It's an either / or type situation.  Pirelli will do fine, and in fact specializes in these cases.  You MAY have misunderstood the request by the Detective Bureau OR the Detective is misunderstanding the requirements (imagine THAT!)?  Did you call Pirelli's office to ascertain what is happening and get turned-down OR is there some other confusion mixed-in here?

About one year ago, a family member needed a similar letter to get a NJFID.  The family member contacted Dr. Pirelli's office and was assigned to one of his staff psychologists.  It did not have to be a psychiatrist.  About three months later, the family member submitted the application for a NJFID, two P2P, and the completed letter to the NJ State Police (we don't have a municipal police department).  About two months after that, we were shopping for two pistols.

Dr. Pirelli's services aren't cheap, however, when you read the finished letter, you can immediately determine a lot of thought went into writing it.  Even the state trooper who took the paperwork was impressed.

To tell EVERYONE here the truth, I'm getting a little tired of low-post-count Newbies to the forum with their pre-launched salvo of, "Don't say Pirelli" when their ass is in a sling.  And then all you hear is CRICKETS when you give the OP the real scoop (FACTS) on the matter.  I'm beginning to think that some of these Posters are too cheap to fight for their 2A rights and are too embarrassed to type it...

I confirmed again with the police department that the letter has to come from a MD. If anyone knows of a MD please let me know.

Would help if you gave more details about what PD this is and exactly why they are requested a letter.

No PD is going to ask for a Doctor's letter to attest that an applicant is safe to possess a gun unless there is a past mental issue that either came up during the background check or was volunteered on the application form.

It's not going to be easy to find an MD who doesn't know you to give out such a letter. I would seek a consultation with a Lawyer that handles 2A cases on a regular basis and go from there. Sometimes there is no cheap and easy way out!

If the police department is insisting upon that requirement, I would reach out to NJ2AS (www.NJ2AS.org).  Alex may be able to help you out.  I'm really curious as to which PD that is.  If that doesn't work, then Johnny B already suggested the next step:  hire a 2A lawyer.

"Alex" is Alexander Roubian, president of New Jersey 2nd Amendment Society, or NJ2AS.  Or you become a member of ANJRPC.  They have several lawyers (on retainer?) that can answer basic legal questions. 

Given the recent Supreme Court ruling, and if the MD's letter is part of the PD's standard method of applying for a permit, they are going to have to re-think their applications requirements.

There are only two types of Doctors that can evaluate you, a Dr. of Psychology (not an MD) or a Dr. of Psychiatry (MD). Giving an either/or makes no sense then saying they must hold an MD. Both are accredited Doctors board certified to evaluate your mental health. 

Expect to pay upwards of $400-500 for an initial eval, and about $300 for a couple follow up sessions. All in, probably about $1500 or more when your done. 

I wouldn't be surprised if the evaluating Dr. Requested all your prior mental health info, including notes from prior evals.
