NJSP REQUALIFICATION

Recommended Posts

Good evening David, I also requalified with Mr. Cope this Tuesday the 19th (took my original qual with him in Aug. 2022).  I actually had rescheduled the week before the new qualification came out on 9/17, but Mr. Cope had the new S.P. 182 CCare form, which replaced the interim qual of 7/18, which replaced the qual prior. I'm also not on facebook and appreciate your willingness to keep us informed here on the forum.

Thanks again,

Ben

so i'm trying to understand the new deadline for requal.  I and others are holding permits with either a court order order or your chief's signature...it may not expire until 2025....My shooting qual done at RTSP certainly works...so its just the 1 hour course.  But lets say I don't own a computer, i still use a flip phone, i don't even know what a message board is....how would I know that anything has changed? there are no overhead signs on Route 80 reminding me to requalify, nothing in the newspapers....Will the court or my chief contact me?  Do they issue me a new ID card that looks or states something different than what I already have.  Sort of like the 15 round mag ownership ban, how are the unconnected supposed to know that they may be in legal trouble?  Just saying....

The short answer is that you're responsible to follow the law, so so there's no exemption/exception for not having online access.

There are plenty of older guys who STILL have 15 and 17 round magazines at the range, and those were outlawed years ago.

For CCW I suspect things will be done in a half-assed way where different PD's do different things.

so I got my new forms from RTSP for the new requirements and dropped one off at my local PD and since the court issued mine I sent a copy to them as well.

yesterday I got an envelope from the morris county court containing the exact same letter I got when they told me to resubmit it to local PD to add guns.   I guess they don't care about it anymore.

There is no need to engage the court.

They haven't cared about it in months...but don't run afoul of what's listed in their order.

I shot my requal at GFH at the end of August. My PD has not contacted me but I will send them a copy via certified mail mid December just to cover my ass. I'm waiting till then because I want to see if they contact me.

I have a recent email from the range where I qualified (Shooters) stipulating on behalf of my instructor, Dave Cope, and themselves, that my qualification complies with the current requirements and will remain vaild through the expiration of my permit in 2024. Since I also have USLS coverage, I will continue to carry without losing any sleep over this issue (or non-issue, if you prefer).

Ooops...........

Dajonga disclaimer... I work at Shooters.

Dajonga's summary of the big takeaways here...

- Don't be mean to us. We know this sucks. We know it is BS. We know the AG and Murphy suck, but we don't want to hear it every single time we take a call. Please, no profanity. We do not like this any more than you do.... We like it less, in fact. This creates more work for us. Be patient, be kind. Be a jerk to us and you will likely be asked to take your business elsewhere.

- Please do not call the store to ask questions about what is clearly stated above.... Our phones ring off the hook already. If every one of the nearly 4000 people who have qualified with us calls, it will be chaos.

- Only call the shop to schedule your qual. Clearly state that you are scheduling for a re-qualification or an initial qualification

- If you can prove you took your qualification with Shooters, you get to reshoot for free. NO EXCEPTIONS! As a serious gun owner in NJ who is accustomed to all of the insane paperwork needed to own guns in NJ, if you failed to keep a copy of your qual and/or your receipt, you have made a mistake. Be a grownup, admit you made a mistake & learn from it. Yes, we have a copy of your Qual in our records. No, we will not go up to the offices looking through thousands of pages of paperwork to provide a copy for you.

- You will need a holster.

- You will shoot 50 rounds.. 10 rounds each at 3, 5, 7, 10 & 15 yards in 5 round strings. There are no time restrictions

- The requal is shooting only and will only take 20 minutes or so.

- If you are shooting the qual for the first time or have lost your paperwork and need to take the whole thing again, the price for the classroom and shooting has increased from $90 to $120.

I think it's GREAT that you're taking care of people like this.

For folks who qualified after July 21 and received the SP 182 (but not the new SP 182 with CCARE) do they still have to requal?

I believe so.

At issue with the pre CCARE (SEPT 17, 2023) Shooters qualification is Shooters never did any holster work before. Now we are being forced to do it.

Got it.

Kudos for the way you're taking care of this.  I'll be shooting my re-qual this weekend...

I would think most folks who didn't keep a copy of their Shooters Qual can get it from their PD. My PD had us give them a copy of it.

Is the RE-qual done indoors or outdoors and is it one person at a time or a line-up of people?

Indoors.

As for how many people are on the line, I do not know. I have been off for a few days and have not witnessed the Re-Qual in action.

About 10 at a time.

VERY well done. It's almost like an assembly line.  You get a briefing in the classroom about the course of fire and how guns will be handled, then you go in and shoot.

When you're done shooting there's already  another group sitting in the classroom behind you, briefed and waiting to go shoot.

One guy in my squad didn't pass, so this is not just an administrative exercise.  You have to demonstrate safe handling and hit 40 out of 50.

This is a fantastic response by Shooters.
