siderman 1,140 Posted July 24, 2011 3 weeks later!- left for my sons homecoming July 1 and got back last night! need a vacation from our vacation. The actuall home coming was awesome, 4 busloads of Marines escorted by the Patriot Guard. Lots of screaming wives, gf's moms/dads(guilty)and a big party atmosphere. They had to get thru a few weeks of re-aclimation, counseling, classes..but we had a house at the beach for my son to hang outwith when he was off duty and he's back here now for liberty.Couple of quick stories I'll share. The "funny one": when they were in Germany getting ready for the flight home all of a sudden theres a happy(inebriated)Air Force nurse(lady officer)walking around asking for my son by name! Turns out she's from our town and coming home the same weekend and new about him leaving too, presumably via word of mouth from her parents which we know and talk too both having kids in Afghan. Now we of course did not disclose any dates/times for OPSEC so there was some coincidental presumption and good timing on her part. Keep in mind my boy does not know her but she was friendly with my older daughter.Any way can you imagine the crap he was taking from everyone, including some serious questions about a security lapse) how did she know...) from the upper ranks. My poor son was blindsided by all the sudden and un-wanted attention! Then all his buddies started in with the pokes and jabs about getting with an officer/nurse/drunk! He didnt find it too much fun but can look back now and laugh. Now the not so funny story. One night he had a buddy over and after a few to many my son went to bed. His friend then started telling stories after a few more drinks. Said my boy took two rounds to his armour plates(HOLY ****!!!) but was not affected(HOLY ****!!!) Wow- what a jolt that was! Also said my son did some kind of commendable/heroic thing with some kids but then realized we didnt know about any of this choice info and got very upset and we couldnt let on we knew. So we will not break that trust and maybe we will be told but HOLY ****! They are told to try and"filter" any info that may upset family so there it lays. And there was also a memorial service for the few in his unit that didnt make it that upset a lot, God bless them and rip. Anyway NJ looks good (yea I said that)and glad to be back home for a little more time together before he returns back full on again. Thanks again for all the good wishes. Oh yea- I had a lot of down time and was excited to visit the numerous pawn shops in the area to check out the guns but was very disappointed in the pricing and lack of haggling. Only saw one hand gun that really grabbed me, a Ruger .44 but at a firm $569++ I passed. Lots of guns for sale but being a military town lots of money to spend too. Speaking of my son took most of his deployment pay and threw down big on an awesome truck- Nissan Frontier loaded crew Pro 4x off road. I am very jealous but he surely deserves it! bry@n 195 Posted July 24, 2011 I'm sure in time, when he is ready, he may tell the HOLY**** story. Glad your spending time with him and he is home.
