LorenzoS 100 Posted January 30, 2012 Having grown up in NYC, I want to be careful not to overreact and move myself someplace too rural or off the grid. Denver or Boulder look like reasonably sized cities with a decent quality of life. Not sure about Wyoming, but that's why we plan to put a lot of effort exploring and visiting before making a final decision.
mipafox 438 Posted January 30, 2012 I haven't been to Denver in quite some time but it is a shithole. Then again, I consider NYC the holiest of shitholes. Boulder is fantastic. You are right on the plain with foothills ("Flat Irons") coming up to 30° in the view of your backyard. Down where you are there are bike trails, parks around Boulder Creek, ranches, ball parks, gun ranges, fishing ponds with bass, and open-air malls. Drive an hour up the hill and there are reservoirs, trout fishing, old gold mines, forests (cut your own wood). Go a little further and there is skiing, glaciers, Continental Divide, tree line, water safe to drink from ponds and streams, fish up to 5 feet long (pike etc.). In the summer I like to spend about an hour dragging my fat a** up the hill to flag staff to watch movies with the old hippies or watch meteor showers over the city. Then spend about 10 minutes riding my bike back down the hill at breakneck speeds.

deadeye74 5 Posted January 30, 2012 I like the desert so probably Nevada somewhere outside Vegas. Other choices would be Kentucky, up in the mountains far enough away to be left alone but close enough to a town so it's not a 2 hour ride to get groceries. bbk 188 Posted January 30, 2012 How is Denver a shithole? I'm just curious what you have to back said statement (I'm not offended, just annoyed when people make such comments and then provide no reason of why). I think some areas that surround Denver are pretty bad, like Aurora... and actually that's probably the only surrounding area that I would consider "bad." And really, the outer fringes of Aurora are miles better than any area around NYC, for example. And in the end, I'd still feel safer there then say Newark or West/North Philly (pretty much just avoid Colfax Ave in Aurora). Aside from Aurora, the other parts like Cherry Creek, Golden, Broomfield, etc. are all pretty nice and well-to-do suburbs. Denver itself is pretty nice too... homey, and really more of a town than a city (coming from our east coast mentality). Clean, smells good, great views, good food, and passionate people. There are a number of homeless people, but not to the point where it is a distraction. Boulder is nice, as is the Fort Collins area. I prefer southern Colorado, like CO Springs, and south-southwest of there (I'm actually no fan of CO Springs personally). Mipa did hit it on the head though-- really eclectic mix of people. Conservatives, hippes, military, libs, etc., but rarely the type that are looking to cause trouble, and all who pretty much respect and reach out to outsiders. I was just out there, and was in a town where my presence increased the Asian population by 100%, haha. Needless to say it was pretty bizarre the first few days, but, considering it was a small town, became a bit of an exotic staple after a few days-- and was really welcomed. While it was a personal interaction, it really showed me the efforts and care that the people hold out there.

mipafox 438 Posted January 30, 2012 How is Denver a shithole? I'm just curious what you have to back said statement (I'm not offended, just annoyed when people make such comments and then provide no reason of why). The same reason I think NYC is a shithole. It looks, talks, walks, and quacks like a shithole. You have a conflicting opinion. I am not annoyed by that in the least, since you are not asking me to live in that shithole or anything. I would agree with you that Denver overall is better than the worst cities you could possibly find in NJ overall. Great comparison

mipafox 438 Posted January 30, 2012 I will say again that I have not been to Denver (other than flying in and out of CO) in some time. I never really spent much time there although I have gone there for various reasons, such as games at Mile High. It has a bad reputation among the people I know in CO and always seemed little shitholey to me. People from NJ probably have a higher shithole tolerance than the people I know in CO

Malsua 1,422 Posted January 30, 2012 Boulder Co is like Berkely East or Ithaca west. I.E. Liberal haven. If you like living on the upper west side and all the NIBMY intervetionist government that comes with it, you'll love Boulder. If you wish to be left alone, pick a different city. Midwest 28 Posted January 30, 2012 Other choices would be Kentucky, up in the mountains far enough away to be left alone but close enough to a town so it's not a 2 hour ride to get groceries. Kentucky is a huge state with something for everyone. In KY if you have over 10 acres, your property can be assessed at the much lower agricultural rate. I have a friend with 20 acres here and he pays under $300 a year with a trailer on it. Gun laws are good, land is inexpensive, fireworks, stun guns,bb guns and slingshots allowed, NFA items allowed. Elk hunting in Southern and Western KY. Bear in the Southeast toward the mountains. Deer are nice and tall and plentiful. If you like boating and fishing there is Lake Cumberland in the Southern portion as well as the Ohio River to boat on. No major toll roads or bridge tolls. From Northern KY...Indianapolis, Columbus Ohio, Louisville, Lexington all 2 hours or less by car and speed limit is 70 mph on I-75 and Tenn border about 3 hours. With only three major cities Louisville, Lexington and Covington...most of KY is rural, and you will see more horses, cattle and deer than people further out. it doesn't snow all that much compared to the East Coast, though it will be colder in the winter..but less humid in the summer. They tax your vehicle and boat yearly, but the lower property taxes offsets that. We pay less property taxes than those in Ohio where they don't tax vehicles and boats yearly. Gather up some hunting buddies and buy some land out here $100,000 could get you 40 to 50 acres if not more. Open carry OK, concealed with permit, loaded pistol in the car with or without permit OK. Depending where you are, Kentucky could be considered the Mid South, Midwest or South. Casino gambling just across the river in Indiana. There are some dry counties here that will not sell alcohol, don't think anyone ever got in trouble for bringing it in for private consumption.

SpacemanFry 51 Posted January 30, 2012 I've always liked Colorado and would love to move there, however there are few jobs in what I do there. More realistically in the short run (3 years or so) I will probably end up moving across the river into PA while still maintaining a reasonable length commute to work into NJ. nino 0 Posted January 30, 2012 I have family in Florida and love it there but cant find a job for what I'm doing here. I would buy property out in pa with a cabin use it every weekend and still live in nj. I have a good job and hate to leave all my family and friends. That's my down fall of why it holds me back to move
Spartiati 63 Posted January 30, 2012 I'm thinking Wyoming, Montana or Colorado. Big sky, 100 acres or so, maybe a pond or stream or 5 on my property, and plenty of prime space for at least a 300 yd rifle pit. Build one of those "general steel" barn looking things and make my own indoor range too. (It's gonna be one hell of a man cave.) I like the way you think! NicePants 58 Posted January 30, 2012 Most likely PA. Close enough to NJ that I wouldn't need to take a plane to visit family, gun laws that are 1000x better than NJ's, and plus less taxes. Although, I keep hearing about how awesome Colorado is, particularly from this thread.

Zell959 40 Posted January 30, 2012 Grew up in NJ and there are at least some things I like about the area, so would probably just venture over the boarder into PA. Honestly wanted to see if it was possible back when I was house shopping, but just didn't work based on the geography of my job & my fiance's job. From what I know of PA, it seems like a pretty good place to be a gun owner (excluding Philadelphia)

From what I know of PA, it seems like a pretty good place to be a gun owner (excluding Philadelphia) Philly is 1000x better than Jersey to be a gun owner. No FID, no purchase permit, License to Carry is Shall Issue (although Philly tries to intimidate you, you'll get it just fine), there are no illegal guns in Philly (no matter what Nutter says), no mag restrictions, etc. And, yes, Philly is more of a shithole than Denver But similar to Denver, if you like city living, there are plenty of nice and reasonably safe areas if you use your head.
