I watched this last night. They didn't show how it happened but from what the Dad said he "swept" his thumb and the gun went off "accidentally".

It would be nice to know exactly what happened. I thought he said something about a misfire, but I don't remember exactly. I'll have to watch it again and see if I heard correctly. Still, how did his thumb get in the way on a misfire unless he tried to remove the cartridge and it went off...???...

 

I did like the shovel- thing his company made. Called a 'Crovel' or something like that. Looked like it was made pretty well.

I think he said he had his thumb over the barrel when it "misfired". Sounds like the recent "dog pulled the trigger" incidents. Round in chamber=gun is unsafe, duh.

 

Most of the preppers on these shows have some kind of prepping related business to promote.

 

Just proves a point, never go on TV, they can edit the footage to make it deliver whatever message they want, in this case, irresponsible parent.

LEO/CCW's with rounds chambered and weapon holstered walking around in public are not unsafe. That being said, I didn't watch the episode, but I chose to comment anyway. $0.02

I watched 2 episodes last night for the first time and I did see this part. Unfortunately the way the camera did not catch exactly what happened (or they edited it out) and he was very vague about it. Any which way I can imagine it happening would just be incredibly retarded so I don't know what happened

 

I did not think the show tried to portray the people either as gun nuts or crazy, but some of them did come out a bit like that simply because they are quite kooky. In fact there was one guy where the "experts" told him he needs to get some firearms for protection to round out his plans.

I watched some of this show, but I missed that part.

 

One thing I noticed, in the little bit of the two episodes I saw, is that a lot of the preppers don't look real healthy. Some of them are overweight. So if it's the end of the world as we know it, what are you going to do if you have a heart attack? Three years of food won't help you too much.

Actually I think they missed an opportunity to show how an injury like his would be handled in a bug out situation. Certainly wouldn't be med-evac 'copters available to him.

Actually I thought that the NY fire fighter situation was more like 'the norm' wrt preppers. There were certainly things that could be improved on but given his situation in NYC... Most of the people portrayed seem to be investing substantial amounts of money - a heck of a lot more then I could consider doing.

This got me curious, from my little bit of research I found that it's difficult to own a handgun in NYC but not so hard for a long gun. Also if he had a felony conviction he wouldn't be allowed on the NYFD. Anyone have any thoughts on the this??

 

Also the woman in New England made me LOL she said, if the shtf we don't need firearms, we have a supportive community....?..... And then lil' Jeffey Dahmer said, "if intruders behave badly we don't need guns, I'll just poison them or slit their throats well they are sleeping." WEIRDO

Yes. I am not judging anyone, but if someone is 300+ lbs, from an actuarial perspective, he/she is much more likely to die from heart disease, diabetes-related complications, or some other physical problem related to being overweight. The probability of dying from a health condition is much, much greater than the probability of dying from some doomsday scenario, so it is not a rational decision for a person to devote all their time and resources to storing up food while neglecting their physical health.

That guy didnt have a good plan at all. He was using a modern day electronic fuel injected vehicle to get to his bugout location 40 minutes away? An EMP would wipe that thing out clean and he would be screwed out of his bugout. I wonder why the "experts" didnt pick up on that. I doesnt surprise me that he shot his thumb off. He wasnt even prepared for the situation he was prepping for. NatGeo probably edited out the shooting of the thumb. I would bet money they have it on film.

Good point, didn't even make that connection myself. My thought is that he believes there will be warnings before it happens, and maybe that's why he loaded a bunch of bicycles onto his trailer. Incase his truck can't make it all the way. But IDK, if you can't fire a gun without blowing your thumb off, you're not prepped for doomsday.IMO

Looks like everyone is getting on this bandwagon. Animal Planet started a new series called "Meet the Preppers" that will follow a prepper family. I watched it last night and learned that I have been remissed in my duties as a father. I have not yet taught my children to slaughter a pig.

I guess prepping is the latest reality sensation now. So are gun reality shows. This could be good or bad for our hobby. I think Doomsday preppers spends a little too much time focusing on firearms to the point that it cast a negative immage on all firearms enthusiasts. The scared of guns crowd looks at a show like that and decides that these people are nuts and the have guns. They cannot seperate that in their minds. I got one weird comment already from an anti gun coworker because he watched that show and knows of my collection.

Now this guy goes and shoots his thumb off..........that doesnt help us any

I don't think all electronically controlled vehicle would be disabled. My understanding is that a pulse may disable some vehicles temporarily, but you would be able to restart some of them. I know there was a show where a guy drove a car beneath a epm generator and it was disabled, but I'm pretty sure he restarted it and it was fine. I guess if you were to be truly prepared for such an event, you would buy two (or more) electronic control modules, leave them in their cardboard shipping box and put them in a true metalized bag (faraday cage), and put them in your BOB. I kinda think a '66 Chevelle would be a sweet bug out ride.

 

EMP attacks are a real potential and should be taken seriously, as I will illustrate as follows. The day after the crazy N. Korea dictator died, a "friend" I know was contacted by some chaps in S. Korea asking for specialists in EMP proofing some important electronic data centers. I think SK should've thought about that sooner no?

Not sure but I think it's he soild state electronics that are the problem. I think anything with tubes would be unaffected. I believe that was one of the things the antonov was designed around. No direct knowledge but just something that I heard.
