mrg455 6 Posted October 14, 2012 Where would a good place be to sell an entire long gun collection including center fires, black powder and shotguns? hypothetically speaking say someone aquires a deceased relatives firearms, but does not want to: a) keep them b)sell individually c)have strangers come to their house I am looking for a one stop buy what I have and not get ripped off shop. again hypothetically, there might be a 12ga Pietro Beretta Victoria, maybe a H.Weimauch (spelling) sports waffen, a EuroArms .58cal and a whole bunch more, but let me make myself very clear.....I am looking for a one stop buy ALL that I have and not get ripped off shop. I thought about going to the Heritage Guild in Rahway, but I have read a few "not so nice things" so now I am looking for plan B. Thanks.
checko 180 Posted October 14, 2012 Lou's seem like stand up guys. My shop of choice
Tactical Turtle 11 Posted October 14, 2012 Gun shops normally give you 50% of there value... u maybe better off selling them here. Guns don't last long in the market place
Steve_G 51 Posted October 14, 2012 Sorry to say, pretty much any shop is going to give you a low ball offer. They have to make a decent profit to make it worth their while.
Old School 611 Posted October 14, 2012 "Not get ripped off" is very subjective. You can expect about 60-70% of retail. Remember they have to be marketed and there is the time value of money, So you can't expect top dollar. Mastodon has been known to buy collections and they do enough of it that I would guess they are fair. Nickjc, or Joe are the guys to talk to and I'll help how ever I can. johnp 45 Posted October 14, 2012 If you want to make the most profit you can, try and sell them here as a full collection, or piece them out. If you sell to a shop, they have to make a profit or else why do it. IMO, make a list of everything you have with pictures, post it in the marketplace on this forum. And say you want to sell as a whole collection give it a week or two to see if anyone bites.
BlueLineFish 615 Posted October 14, 2012 Just list them here. Whoever wants them must come to you and pick them up. This is the only way to maximize your profit.
1563621 388 Posted October 14, 2012 shops will low ball. Sell here, might take a little longer but maybe you will make alot more cash.
Adam 6 Posted October 14, 2012 I've seen Lou's in Raritan buy collections, multiple long arms etc. They have a ton of high end guns.. Just keep in mind, they buy with wanting to make a profit in mind.
lunker 274 Posted October 14, 2012 If both you and the buyer have NJ Firearms I'D cards, the transaction does not need to be at your house or through an FFL. Use an agreed on meeting place where guns are not out of place, like a WMA.
mrg455 6 Posted October 14, 2012 I think my biggest problem right now is, I don't know what most are worth. I think (if selling to a gun shop) 60% would be more then fair for both of us. the problem is.... do you reccommend me getting a gun price book, or should i just take them in to Lou's, the heritage guild etc, and see what they tell me?
Tactical Turtle 11 Posted October 14, 2012 Google them. Look at a couple sites and average out the prices. Won't cost you anything but time and it will give you an idea what to ask for at the shops. Go in with the numbers and where you found them knock off 30% amd haggle from there. Ur selling a collection not just one gun so they should offer you a tad more then they would at an individual price point. Also have you thought of consignment?? Babyface Finster 45 Posted October 14, 2012 I understand where you're coming from, but I've bought several guns from forum members and have had zero problems. As was already said, you don;t have to meet at your house. You can easily research the values on the internet. I urge you to reconsider and post them for sale here. I'm in the market for another shotgun :derisive:

Take pictures and any info you have on the guns, and post them up here asking for help identifying what they are. Lots of knowledgeable guys on here, who could be able to pinpoint a certain rifle to within a decade and tell you it's current market value. If you can identify the guns yourself, check gunbroker and gunsamerica, and just bing (this guns) value. And you should be able to come up with a fair asking price. Kingsoverqueens 10 Posted October 14, 2012 I'm in the same boat. My father asked me to buy his entire collection, but I don't have the money allocated for the type of guns he's got.
Adam 6 Posted October 14, 2012 A good shop, will open that book right in front of you and SHOW you book value. I've seen Chris at Lou's do it often. Any where you plan on bringing them, call in advance an let them know you have X #s of guns you would like to sell and it is an all or nothing deal.. They may make arrangements for you to come before or after hours so your not tying up counter space during business hour with XX guns..

BlueLineFish 615 Posted October 14, 2012 One of the best ways is to check auction sites like gunbroker. Look at what ones have sold for and go by that
Maksim 1,504 Posted October 14, 2012 If you are in central jersey, depending on where, tj sporting arms, Bullseye tactical, East Brunswick Sportsmans, all good places, they will show you the book value, and give you an offer, expect 50% that is what it is. For common guns, make a list of what you think you have, post pics of what you do not know, look up gunbroker completed auctions, and list them here in the marketplace. They will sell quick. If you want to sell the entire collection, there are people here with deep enough pockets to do it. This will take a bit more time, however how you will get the most money. Obviously, make sure the guns are yours legally, etc. (left to you by will, etc.)
reloaderguy 30 Posted October 14, 2012 Gunbroker. You get the price you want. Not what a dealer wants to give you! Unless you are rich and want to only get 50% of what they are really worth.
Sixtytwo327 14 Posted October 14, 2012 I am looking for a one stop buy ALL that I have and not get ripped off shop. Don't think you'll find one - retail shops low-ball you because they're gambling that the gun might not sell for years (if ever) so until it does, they carry the loss. It agree it sucks but I like they say, its business, not personal. We did an estate sale for a deceased relative recently using an estate agency. They did all the cataloging, advertising and sales, and found lots of junk that when added up was worth several thousand - junk like old magazines - we would have thrown everything away or dumped it cheap. How big a collection - 10 or 1,000?
Old School 611 Posted October 14, 2012 One of the best ways is to check auction sites like gunbroker. Look at what ones have sold for and go by that This is an excellent point! You have to look what things have sold for not the asking price which may be two high. And to be honest dealers don't want to sell at full retail on used items either. The more attractive they make the price the quicker they will move the inventory. Thus get their money back.
kman 56 Posted October 14, 2012 AF Boyer hardware in Pennsylvania gives cash right then and there and they dont lowball either. Bring a few there and get money, bring the collectible ones to Sarco in Pennsylvania, get money from them. I hear there is a place near the sands casino in penn that pays cash too. You could do that on and off for a year or two and sell off what you dont want. Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk
2 trip_nick 0 Posted October 14, 2012 I was talking to a manager in Dunkelbergers yesterday and he said they're averaging 20 used guns per day walking in the door right now. He said people need money to pay their bills. I don't think it's a good time to sell a collection to a store.

mrg455 6 Posted October 14, 2012 in total there are 16. one is an air gun, one is a black powder pistol, the rest are split between shotguns and black powder/center fire long guns.
Purple Patrick 638 Posted October 14, 2012 I'd put them for sale here I know people would grab them all up I know I'm in the market for a reasonably priced shotgun or .
pbkid6974 1 Posted October 14, 2012 I've heard good things about sportsmans rendezvous in Flemington giving top dollar for used guns. I'm pretty sure they would even trade if you want something else. But at the same time they are not that knowledgeable from my experience and tend to seem a little standoff-ish at times.
Maksim 1,504 Posted October 14, 2012 The other option, take them to a dealer and put them on consignment. Dealer gets 20% cut of whatever they sell for.
chumo00 0 Posted October 14, 2012 Avoid the shop sell on GunBroker..In the end much less of a headache and you get the most for the entire collection. It is just like Ebay and very simple to use they have help section and just call your local Fedex/UPS shop and ask for shipping instructions. Best way to go to get most cash and sell it quickly..
