Harry Reid shoots down AWB

Recommended Posts

I don't think it's quite dead yet.. Certainly we can't let our guard down or stop calling/writing.

I think this was a matter that Reid didn't want to lump the AWB into the main gun control bill that would be brought to the floor since he know it would poison the whole thing. From what I read the bill they bring to the floor will include some mix of Gun Trafficking (straw purchases), Background Checks, and Mag limits. Most think it will be the first two with Mag limits and the AWB being allowed as amendments on the floor.

Politico article

There are two likely paths: Reid could advance a gun trafficking bill with a school safety provision; some form of background checks and the assault weapons ban would then be offered as amendments. In the other scenario, Reid might offer a background checks bill that includes the gun trafficking and school safety provisions, with assault weapons again offered as an amendment.

The Judiciary panel also approved a bipartisan gun trafficking bill backed by Leahy, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), among others, that dramatically boosts penalties for “straw purchases”of weapons, in which a person buys firearms on behalf of an individual barred by law from possessing them. Thanks to its support from Republicans, Reid and Leahy want to see this bill as a foundation for the Democratic gun package on the floor.

The interesting thing is that the Democratic-version of the Background check bill is not supported by any Republicans so it may not make it in the bill... or will be loosened before going to Reid.

Republicans, for their part, strongly oppose any gun-related provisions beyond the gun-trafficking measure, meaning Reid and other top Democrats have to determine which provisions can reach the 60-vote threshold to overcome an expected GOP filibuster.

Do not let your guard down. There was a reason for this. They removed the most-objectionable parts of the proposed legislation package so they can beast the other parts into law. After they wrangle their way with the other parts of the legislation, they can always introduce the AWB and magazine ban legislation. It's easier to do so if they don't have to say the legislation was voted on and failed the vote.

The AWB and the Magazine Capacity BILLS have been tabled. However, the possibility remains that they can be added on as AMENDMENTS to bills that likely will get passed (Universal Background Checks, etc.).

Of course, we're in the NJ. So we're still in hot water. But it's good to know the chances of something Federal happening have diminished.

As others mentioned, this is good news, but it is certainly not the end of it. Harry Reid simply did not include it in the bill that they want to introduce, likely because it will be met with a heavy amount of resistance. Parts of AWB2.0 will likely resurface as amendment in other bills that would likely draw more Republican support.

We need to be vigilant and if anything seems fishy we should investigate and share it.

They can be added as amendments but that they are not part of the base bill spells doom for them.

That said, don't let your guard down.

The comments on politico have me lmao, especially the ones about the 2A and hunting...

IMHO it would be better if the whole package was introduced and voted down. By allowing the watered down version, Harry Reid is just helping this pass. And the AWB and magazine limits will show up later attached to a bill to fund medicine for school children or shelters for battered women, or something else that will be difficult to vote down.
