New Tool to Find Cheapest Gun Price. Great for Black Friday/Cyber Monday

Recommended Posts

First let me start by saying that this site is a hobby by a couple of programmers and I. We are making 0 money off of it and are paying for the servers/hosting/ etc.. entirely out of our own pocket. There is not a single ad or even a donate button on the site. It is a free tool for other gun enthusiast.

About 2 years ago I wanted to create a way to quickly find the cheapest price on any gun I wanted. I was lucky enough to find some extremely talented programmers to help me out here locally. So after a long time testing and grabbing some good deals for ourselves , we are ready to release it to everyone right in time for Black Friday/Cyber Monday. We hope you guys enjoy it, its been fun!

The url is Search For and Find Guns for Sale Online - GunWatcher.com the site is COMPLETELY FREE.

how it works: You type in the gun you want and it searches dozen's of gun stores, AS WELL as auctions ending with 6 hours, or auctions with a Buy it Now. It returns these results in a table and you can quickly click a link to go straight to the page. you can also use the "watch this gun" feature. This allows you to save that model to your "watch list" and everytime you login you can quickly check the current cheapest price of all of your saved guns. It will let you know if the price has raised or lowered since the last time you checked.

I have put more hours than i can count into this project along with a few other programmers. We love any feedback good or bad, just use the contact us link on the page. If you guys like the website please tell your friends, family, social media, forums, etc.. We appreciate any help we can get! Hope you guys enjoy the site, and go save yourself some money!

PS. If any forum sponsors want to be placed on the site just email me and we will get working on it.  It cost absolutely nothing to be added

thanks! The group of us have added 10 stores in the last 24 hours so we are well on our way.  We just wish some smaller mom and pop stores would approach us.  It is hard for them to get online sales especially when their marketing budget is pretty much none.  We are working with a few now, but hopefully as people help spread the word we can get a ton of sites on there and help them out.  Do you guys have any favorite stores in mind?

Great tool.  Thanks.

Maybe an explanation of how search terms are searched or an option for "exact phrase" might be nice.  I searched 10/22 and got everything with these two numbers but no Ruger 10/22 rifles.   "10/22" gave no results.

Very cool!   Hopefully, a future update might include more than 5 watched guns in your gun list.  :D

I would love to offer way more than that, but i dont want to give our database guy a heart attack yet.  Our data has almost quadrupled in one week and we might already be close to outgrowing our current database.  He has been working on a custom db just for our site but its not quite ready yet.  Hang in there and i will guarantee you will see more than 5 in the near future

i like the exact phrase option and will pass that along!  Could you use the "share this search" link the site gives you so i could see what exactly is going on?

Many thanks for what you've done already.  Like I say... "future." :)    This is gonna get big!  Plan for it. :)

i talked to the database programmer tonight and thought he was going to kill me when i asked about some more saved searches.  I think we can get something in place within the next week.  he showed me the new custom db he has been designing for the site and its ridiculous.  Searches that were 2-3 seconds were a few hundredths of a second. He thinks he can get some time over the break and have it ready to roll.  Problem is the other programmers and I have to rewrite every bit of code that has anything to do with searching for items since its a totally different db  :icon_e_sad:

Don't rush it. Take your time and do it right, and do some stress testing on it. You've got a gem of a product here!  You want to make sure it scales proprotionately with the growth of your customer base (which I'd suspect will be "explosive"). :D So, if that means taking  a little extra time before a release to do some additional testing, that's time well spent.

All of us, I'm sure, would be more than happy to volunteer as "beta testers." :D  Just curious... I'm own an IT Consulting firm. What DB software are you using?   php/MySQL?   MS-SQL?  Something else?

It sounds like they originally created it with an MS Access DB and are switching over to probably MySQL, which is definitely a much better option. That would require the new connection strings and sql requests/updates, etc.

Its running MySQL 5.6 currently.  Innodb full-text search isn't scaling well at all.  We are running on windows which makes it hard to find precompiled versions with other features, so the db guy compiled his own using the mysql windows binaries with some open source features added to it that would help us out.  The front end is MVC written in C#.

Gotcha.  I'm sure you'll figure it out.    Let us know if you want beta testers. :)

I searched for a pistol and it came back out of stock. Is it possible to leave out places that are out of stock?

I do my ABSOLUTE best to remove any item that is not in stock automatically.  Any way you could let me know where this happened at?  Data is updated just about every hour.  A few sites I cant do anything about, like Atlantic Firearms and Aim Surplus.  Atlantic won't tell you it is out of stock until you try to add it to your cart.
