Considering Charlotte area move

Recommended Posts

I'm currently mulling over an opportunity to fill an open role with my company in the Charlotte area in Free America. This is all happening very quickly. I've been there a few times on business and thought it was pretty nice. I'm actually looking on the South Carolina side of the border. Does anyone have any experience with the area? I'm open to hearing the good , bad, and any helpful tips.

Once it becomes more real like it is going to happen, the wife and I are going to go scouting down there.

The biggest positives for me so far are a larger/nicer house for the same money, great weather, great schools (obviously depends on where we buy but it is a must), slower/less stress lifestyle, politics, lower taxes, and of course gun laws.

NC is much better than NJ but I think they still have things like handgun purchase permits, etc.

SC is on my list of places to look as well.   I wish they allowed open carry and didn't have "No Guns" signs with the force off law, but again it's 1000x better than NJ with no limits on the hardware (mag limits, evil features, NFA, etc.)

Move, you'll love it.

The climate is mild most of the year, but the 1" of snow you get twice a year will paralyze the state except the mountain areas.

The people I know and have known were in the Greensboro area except one in Charlotte but the story is the same.

The only problem is all the dark blue voters moving out of NY/NJ.  It won't be long before NC turns into a socialist cesspool.

Am I going to be the last gun owner in NJ in a few years?  Please don't do it to me :crying:

Considering that you will be the last, just remember to turn off the lights when you leave New Jersey.

And blowing the bridges on your way out would be appreciated :)

I'm leaning more towards the SC side of the border. They unfortunately have all of the prohibited carry areas and signage rules. Easy fix, not to patronize posted establishments. The big problem I see are schools. For instance, it would be illegal to pick up my daughter at her school with a gun in the car unless she met me on public property. Otherwise, its pretty much a cash and carry state when it comes to purchasing and owning. Gasp!, I don't understand how the streets aren't running red with blood. <sarcasm off>.

Plus fireworks are legal there, another hobby that I enjoy and is denied in NJ.

I'm also concerned with the amount of dark blue folks moving down there. Just like what is happening to Colorado with the hippies from the west coast. I can only hope that they don't build critical mass and that the natives keep them at bay. This is also another reason I'm looking at the SC side. It appears to get a decent share of transplants, but not as much as the NC/Charlotte area. The dark blues coagulate together like a fungal colony. They fear being surrounded by red and hopefully it will contain them there.

This is all still up in the air, but my fingers are crossed.

We have been looking in that area as well. We went to the Fort Mill area(Tega Cay) because the schools are very good there. We met several people in the neighborhoods we looked in and most were transplants from just about everywhere. FWIW, all were very nice and said pretty much what you're thinking. Lower stress, friendly area, easy to get around. Pertty much the opposite of NJ. Overall the cost of living is lower, but depending on what kind of work you do, the salaries are lower as well. It's all relative. I have found that tech workers, and project managers tend to be closer in salary to NJ.

Thanks for the info, confirms what I have been researching. I take it you are still looking around? Feel free to pm me with any info or areas that you come across and I'll do the same.

Me and my woman were looking to move down to NC last year when a job opportunity came up for her and we both just couldnt up and leave, and i wish we did. For us, its taking the plunge that holds us back. I would personally go anywhere south of Virginia.

It probably won't be a determining factor, but the reciprocity with a NC carry permit (they only issue resident) is incredible.  It gives you just about every state except the usuals (NJ, MD, CA, etc).  SC's reciprocity has a few less states.

Its official, my transfer is approved. I'll be looking to sell up here and move down sometime between now and July. I have to say, I've been through ups and downs with this decision, and was very close to calling it off. I'm glad that I didn't and things are moving full speed ahead from this point on. I have to say I'm very excited to GTFO of this state for multiple reasons (including 2A rights of course).

I'm actually holding off on my .308 AR build until the move. It will be my first freedom rifle built in free America.

On that note, if anyone is looking for a good home in the Old Bridge area, drop me a note. ;)

Fort Mill area is nice....but everyone from the northeast is heading to Charlotte it appears. I've got a friend in Pineville and it's starting to look like little NJ. Fort Mill is now exploding cause of the over flow.

That said since i moved here a year ago SC has become the hot destination. Traffic in the Cola area is up a decent amount. I'm worried the liberals will take over soon here because of the lower population. Oh well I'm in the sticks of lexington County so I've got time.

Any who welcome to Free America! Get used to BBQ, biscuts, and guns!

Yea I hear about the influx of NJ/NY folks in the Charlotte area. I'm just hoping that the dark blue progressives are for the most part... staying behind. All that I can hope for is for the SE to hold out at least until I'm retired; whence I can then move once again to whatever last bastion of freedom is left in this country.

I'm in SC every 6 weeks looking for a house outside of Charleston Home prices are not much cheaper And SC CCW is not all that reciprocal but check it out. Has to be better than NJ. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've got SC and Utah, it covers most of the USA.

The laws aren't all that bad. Property must have a strict sign adherence to hold any weight.

Home prices not much cheaper then here in NJ? It's all relative if you ask me.  I can find homes in NJ that are very affordable, but just not in an area that I would want to live. I could also find homes in NC/SC that are way out of my league. When I compare where I live today with a similar type of neighborhood in the Charlotte area, dollar for dollar I feel I can get more of a house down there (along with 60% in tax savings). Just like anywhere, desirable areas will have commensurate prices.

See my location. I live in SC.

I also edited the post. I meant the no ccw signs must be a specific style, size and location to hold any weight.

Duh!! Sorry We even talked before about you being in SC.

Dan - Good Luck with the move. And Yep, I'm going to spend as much in SC as my house is worth up here.

Of course the taxes will be about 15% of what I pay here.
