usnmars 136 Posted July 15, 2015 I went to a local auction yesterday and picked up a nice 1945 Berlin Luebecker G43 sniper. The gun is 100% matching but unfortunately someone put a coat of shellac on the stock and some of the smaller hardware, which i will take care of shortly. The scope is original and a Luftwaffe Fallschirmjäger for a FG-42, the mount is original and numbered to the gun. The bore is 100% mint and internals are nice and clean. I ordered a shooters kit for it and when it comes in, I will give a range report. Someone made a comment of "why would someone want a gun with swastikas on it......." I laughed and bid and got it for opening bid.

mustang69 505 Posted July 16, 2015 It's a beauty, but I have to say I cringed when I saw it laying in the driveway...
BMWR12 35 Posted July 16, 2015 Very nice, I hope your stock isn't sanded like most German rifles that were shellaced and that the eagle proofs are still visible. I just picked up a beautiful Ac45 k43 that is coming next week. I will post some pics when it arrives.

fishnut 2,358 Posted July 29, 2015 sweet find! So whats the best process to remove shellac from a stock. someone put a few coats on my 1917 and I would like it gone without messing it up
BMWR12 35 Posted July 29, 2015 Laquer thinner works best. There is really no safe way to clean it off German wood without hurting the value to collectors. The scope mount on this rifle is also a reproduction unfortunately.
302w 83 Posted July 29, 2015 sweet find! So whats the best process to remove shellac from a stock. someone put a few coats on my 1917 and I would like it gone without messing it up I would try alcohol. Assuming it has BLO underneath, you may not even destroy that if it wasn't sanded.
T Bill 649 Posted July 29, 2015 Denatured alcohol and 000 steel wool in the direction of the grain, not across the grain.
fishnut 2,358 Posted July 29, 2015 I would try alcohol. Assuming it has BLO underneath, you may not even destroy that if it wasn't sanded. What type? Denatured, isopropyl ect? and how to apply it? I have applied all sorts of wood finishes and chemically stripped quite a bit of furniture but don't really know how to go about not sanding or damaging the wood somewhat. And sorry for the thread hijack!
302w 83 Posted July 30, 2015 I used paper towels and hardware store denatured alcohol. My Carbine had a sort of pimp shine to it and I was able to remove a ton of grime and god knows what, without stripping the BLO. The alchy will strip the oil if not careful. BLO is interesting. It is actually proper maintenance to oil it once a year. Surplus rifle forums has a good section on wood working.
