Inventory of known Firearms Lawyers

Recommended Posts

I think it might be helpful to have a pinned thread somewhere with a list of known firearms attorneys. I only know of two right now. Evan Nappen and Jonathan Goldstein (from that recent 2A panel Pizza Bob summarized). Since there seems to be a constant trickle of people that should probably consult an attorney when they post or soon after, these people could make use of that list. It would be unfortunate to lose track of attorney's like Jonathan Goldstein, who I never heard of until now, but appears to be experienced and is licensed in NJ. Some people have mentioned other attorneys that to find again would be a pain.

If the powers that be want to be formal, and contact the attorneys to ask if they'd like to be listed, that's fine I suppose. Just means more work. But I was thinking something more informal that included a statement saying "NJGF does not endorse any attorney. This just a list.. " ...or whatever is the right thing to say.

Great thread idea. My only input I can give is don't waste your time trying to contact Nappen unless you have a high profile case. I contacted him a couple weeks ago and a friend of mine did a couple years ago neither of us got a reply or return call.

That is unfortunate. I believe he lives in Maine so I can understand only wanting to take particular cases, but that doesn't excuse the lack of decency to reply.

New Hampshire...

Federal stuff, Ryan Cleckner is definitely someone I’d call. Does classes on getting FFLs and carry permits (didn’t try either, and have both categories). Ex-military (Army Ranger sniper), but worked for Remington as a legal consultant. Also does a lot for the firearms community in regards to education... whether shooting or legal information. Listen to some of his podcasts, as the legal ones really do take a boring subject and explain it in an interesting way.

I have a friend that could use someone to consult regarding NJ regs, NY regs, transfers, and estates.

Short description:
Friend's dad died, NJ resident. Will did not lay out disposition of his firearms collection.  We are assuming wife will be now legal owner after disposition of estate.  Her one son is a L.I. resident, and wants to take possession of the collection, and she's agreeable to that.  Need to find out if there's any procedural pitfalls to watch out for.

You need an estate lawyer for all that. Unless you can get the firearms inherited directly to the son, the mom will have to go through all the legal channels or transferring the firearms to him.

Wife can verbalize to the lawyer who disposed of the estate and the executor that the father intended for the firearms to go to the son and not her. The lawyer will know how to properly handle this.

Just wanted to chime in. I know it was mentioned on this topic years ago that Nappen no longer answers or calls back. I wanted to say that I emailed him and he got back to me in 2 days. He spent 15 mins with me on the phone. Even though I told him I wasn’t in need of paid counsel , he was  good about hearing my potential issue. Also I would like to say good things about Frank Pisano as well, he also spent time with me on the phone and allowed me to pick his brain.

fyi I have been a member since 09 but have been a way for a while. I changed my screen name and it looks like it removed my previous post count and other info. Hopefully I don’t have another hiatus

I called one of the ANJRPC on-call lawyers (a membership benefit) years ago and got a prompt callback with a clear answer to my question.  Unfortunately I don't recall who that attorney was.

I called Nappen last year with a question, and also got a quick callback, a clear answer, and we spent the next 20 minutes on the phone discussing old Mausers.    I suspect a lot has to do with how busy the attorney is when you call.   If you catch them when they're up to their eyeballs in work, it could be awhile before you get a response.

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in
    • I use an Alien Gear cloak tuck (IWB) with my Shield.  Neoprene back - in the summer it does feel warm but doesn't rub or chafe.   https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-iwb-holster.html Could also go with the shapeshift as it has multiple options - OWB/IWB, Appendix... https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-shapeshift-modular-holster-system.html
    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
