Holster preference for competitive shooting

Recommended Posts

OK, I'm going to begin the process of competative shooting and participating in matches. For the record I have zero expectation or anticipation of actually "Competing" and my goal is simply to enjoy the shooting sports more than punching paper.

With that in mind I need to get a holster and magazine holders.

After some research I'm thinking that OWB is the better option, but am not sure about the "cant" of the holster. I saw one company has them in "FBI Cant."

In your expereince are they more or less comfortable than a straight drop type. Again, I'm not looking for speed draw or anything. Just a safe and comfortable way to wear the gun while on the range.

If anyone has a recomendation for a 92FS it will be appreicated.

I use a SERPA for my PX4 Storm in both USPSA and IDPA.

Be very careful with the cant of your holster. In USPSA, the muzzle of your gun when in the holster has to be pointing within 3 feet of your feet. Also - a straight vertical holster is sometimes advertised by manufacturers as "Speed cant". I say keep it vertical unless your extremely familiar with drawing from a canted holster.

You might also mention what sports you are looking to get into. USPSA IDPA or any and all.. :)

Umm...yes?

lol. I don't know.

Between Phils write up on the beretta forum and your invite I'm just all jazzed up to go shooting.

I'd likely say USPSA but only because I've spent some time on the website and see that events are held at my club. I don't know much, if anything, about IDPA.

What would I need for the OBCATs or the other one run at your place on Friday's?

FBI cant is simply butt forward about 15 degrees. It is advantageous for concealment as it puts the heel of the grip up under your arm and prevents printing. For competition a straight drop holster will work well in either USPSA or IDPA. A muzzle forward cant is allowed in USPSA as long as it points within the circle Nick mentioned. IDPA does not allow a muzzle forward cant.

For competition, I prefer Kydex and of the Kydex holsters I own I have more Blade Tech than any other brand. They make holsters for a wide variety of handguns and make two types of belt interfaces - a thread through, called Stingray and a clip-over called Tech-Lok. Both are very secure, but the edge for stability goes to the Stingray. Do not get a paddle holster. Blade Tech makes an injection-molded line of polyethylene (I think) called their Revolution line, that is less money, but not as durable. I prefer the Kydex. The mag pouches from the revolution line work fine and are reasonably priced. They can also be had with the Tech-Lok belt mount, which is very convenient.

If you start off in IDPA you only need a holster and two mag pouches (or one double), and three mags. A good gun belt goes a long way in making everything work as it should - think of it as the foundation. Again, you don't have to spend a fortune - Uncle Mikes makes a polyethylene reinforced nylon "rigger's" belt for about $25.

This should get you started.

The Friday indoor matches are great for people new to action shooting. A holster is recommended but they do allow you to have a bag. MAg pouch or holders are great. 3 to 5 mags depending on round count recommended for USPSA, can get by with 3 at the indoor one.

There is a great series of videos in a sticky on the competition folder you might want to check out. They cover a lot of details and if you have any other question come and ask them.

As you have already seen here, BLADETECH.

If shooting USPSA, I recommend DOH (dropped offset) with teklok for the holster.

For the mag pouches, I would also go with Bladetech. I would suggest 3 double mag pouches. (I would get teklok as well)

If you ever plan on doing IDPA, get the belt attachment for the holster (mag pouch if you went with teklok) and you will be IDPA legal.

Also I highly suggest a good quality inner outer shooting belt like the ones from CR speed or Double Alpha. Makes a world of a difference.

I really appreciate all of the replies.

I spent some time on the bladetech website and looking over the catalogue, and frankly, a lot of the lingo confusted me.

I'm new to this and the acronyms for the varios stuff doesn't yet jive. As an example, I had no idea what OWB meant v. IWB until I google it. Such a noob but am willing to laugh at my self.

I'll keep plugging away. In the meantime, it seems like I should budget around $150 for the holster, belt and magazine pouches, no?

Again, thanks for the replies.

I've checked out Bladetech and can't pull the trigger, so to speak. The options (and prices) have me paused.

Someone on the Beretta site linked me to a distributor selling Uncle Mikes stuff. They have a line of inexpensive Kydex holsters. Like $9.99 inexpensive. Same with the double magazine pouch. For $40 bucks shipped I can get a holster and 2 mag pouches.

For someone who may only use this stuff once and while, can I go wrong?

I hear you.

I live by this rule but I will say if the videos and talk does interest you and you can see yourself getting into it, get good quality stuff you won't need to replace down the road, but I would say get out to a match and just list what kind of gun you have and what you might need to get through a match before you do buy, I know many of us are more than willing to lend you stuff for a match and with this group we probably have just about any gun mag combo covered. That way you can really get a feel for the sport/sports and see what direction you really would like to go and then make the purchase of equipment.

I did buy good equipment and some stuff I will use for a long time and not out grow (no not size wise, lol) but other stuff was gun specific and probably will be selling that stuff off over time. Like with anything, time and experience will teach you. We have probably all had the, if I only knew then what I know now moment. Just something to think about.

I was on a cruise and fell in love with this hot chick who played the EViolin like a champ, then went home did more research and further fell in love with its range.. Always wanted to play the violin and this seemed like a solution.. problem is that I suck and its hard to teach yourself this instrument, and have no time for classes.

didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Just to come back with status on this topic, I purchased an Uncle Mikes kydex holster from retailer on Ebay. $24 bucks shipped.

It arrived yesterday and fits my gun perfectly, is easy to draw from and reholster.

Mag pouches are also on the way from another online retailer.

Would have preferred to buy them at Brick and Mortar but my guy only sells leather.

I'll continue to learn and keep an eye on Blade tech. The lead time together with my infamiliary iwth the products kept me from buying from them. We'll see how things go in the future, but for now I have a much better holster than the one I borrowed and will be much more comfortable during my next shoot.

Thanks to all who replied.

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
