Need help with tire choices for Jeep Wrangler JK model

Recommended Posts

Alright jeep guys, I need some help.

This past May I picked up a less on Jeep Jk freedom edition and I've been dying to upgrade the tires. I've explored the idea of adding a lift but the cost of buying and installing it plus the fact it's a lease is keeping me from going that route.

So my question is, how large of tire can I fit a stock JK suspension using the stock wheels? I was hoping to fit 33s but two places gave me conflicting stories of "yes it will fit" and "no it won't fit". I understand I'll need spacers given the width of the 33's.

So, let me hear your opinions...if you can recommend some tirs choices that would be great as well.

I'm contemplating doing the same thing. I don't have an answer for you but I offer reading material that will. I'm still doing research.

I would be running BFG AT on my truck except they don't make them for the 20" rims I have on there so I put a set of the BFG Rugged Terrain instead. 20k miles and I'm happy with them - good grip wet or dry and good wear too.

What do you need the tires for?

I have 35"x12" M/T-R kevlars on my wrangler with no lift.. it did require spacers, flat fenders and some minor cutting of the front air dam.. hell my air dam is already cut and taken off if you want it or need to cut yours and don't want to.

Tire choice depends on what you plan on doing with the jeep... you mall crawling this bad boy? My jeep handles like poop on the road, but is a beast off.

Also take a hard look at your gearing, i run 4.10 gears(rubicon) and its ok for 32" snow tires... sluggish with the 35"s. I know the sports come with much lower gears unless your find one with the tow package. and kiss your MPG away... i get 16mpg.

For the most part I'm just looking for a more aggressive / wide stance. I will be taking it off-road (Rousch park) but nothing hard core since the jeep is not armored the right way.

As for gears, I'm pretty sure they are the stock 3.73 on the sport X with trailer package. Right now I'm leaning towards the nitro Terra Grappler 295/70R17 with spacers. The 2nd choice looks to be the general grabbers...

Not a Jeep, but I've got Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs on my Silverado and loved them in the snow and off road. A little on the pricey side but they have a decent tread wear rating.

I have BFG AT on my Ford F150 Raptor now but will go with Goodyear Duratracs next.

The Generals are great tires, just be careful what you use to clean or shine the sidewalls with if you get the red lettering. I used to run Boggers, but couldn't take the noise any longer. I actually installed a system so I didn't have to hear them anymore. The Irok's are much quieter. I usually trailer my rig out to Rausch Creek or AoAA, too far from home when I snap an axle or blow a drive shaft. I actually drove it all the way to OC jeep week in MD this past august on the Irok's, wasn't too bad. Except the top speed of 67mph with the 4:88's.

That's the trouble with leasing...you have to really limit yourself on mods, lest they really try to pin it to you at the end (unless you buy it out of course).

And forget offroading.  The only offroading I do is across my front lawn if the kids block me in.  :picknose:

Green trails are dirt roads lol. I like Blacks and reds myself. 8792806426a625f6e0a89ccd6937ecbc.jpg not my rig (a buddy of mine from Hudson Valley 4Wheelers) I was already at the top. Just to show some of the trails at Rausch Creek. This is Yellow Jacket. (Not a green trail)

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in
    • I use an Alien Gear cloak tuck (IWB) with my Shield.  Neoprene back - in the summer it does feel warm but doesn't rub or chafe.   https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-iwb-holster.html Could also go with the shapeshift as it has multiple options - OWB/IWB, Appendix... https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-shapeshift-modular-holster-system.html
    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
