So I've been on the forum for about a month or so... and have unfortunately developed something of an addiction to it, which I must curtail. One thing I've noticed, is that it's usually the same bunch of guys posting. Not that there's anything wrong with that - you guys are way cool and very knowledgeable, but it seems like there's about 20 or so very active members, whose screen names I can list from memory and the other 1,000 or so members seem to be silent. I just wonder why that is...

I don't post for the sake of posting. Of someone asks a question and someone else answered it the same way I would have then I don't write anything. Also people don't often leave themselves open for smart a** comments, so I'm outta luck there. I like to read peoples conversations and learn a little from them.

status quo for most established forums.......

especially when a forum starts to crack down on the childish posts.....

I prefer quality over quantity ...... and I am very happy with where this forum is now headed, and proud to be a part of it.

yah, that's what I thought... I just have a big mouth (so to speak) and leave myself open to smarta** comments (as was noticed recently). I'd prefer quality over quantity too. I'll take Shane & Wojo over 500 guys that don't know what they're talking about.

I was just wondering. I don't participate in any other forums at all, really. Never cared. This is the only one that really caught my interest.

the problem, at least what we thought it came to, is you have a few very vocal people, whom have very little experience, or no purpose to post, post... and either they are wrong, or not the best answer, and it gets taken seriously by otherwise unknowing people.

I do have that problem to some extent, however I always make sure to put I do not know 100% if I dont.

Within the forum owner/admin community I have serious issues with a few other philosophies about having people post for the sake of posting. What it does do is increase the post counts, however does nothing to improve the overall fiber in the community, or increase the post quality. there are no doubts about that leading to a very quick and dramatic failure of a forum when a few key blabber mouths stop posting and it dies. That business model is all around having alot of eyeballs on the screen and clicking on ads.

My vision for the forum is the complete opposite, and see it as an online community to an extension of the offline friendships that are created. Post quality and quality of the overall advice is the top priority. If we have to loose a few blabber mouths to accomplish that, like we did this week, I am all for that.

All of the sudden, 90% of the posts are quality firearms related posts. Who doesn't like that?

I know I do. thanks Maks. your philosophy I agree with. quality firearms advice and intelligent discussions are much preferred to name calling and general mischief (like sexy soda ads and links to semi-porn sites). I think "girls with guns" is all that's appropriate in that vein for this forum.

I'm on one or two other forums, and pretty much have the same view as to my participation. I am new to firearms, and am a civilian, so when questions get asked, and answered, concerning firearms, I sit back and absorb.

When it comes to politics, I'll put my two-cents in. I was a history major/poli-sci minor in college, I teach social studies, and I act like Glenn Beck when I've had a few adult beverages.

That's why you'll find my posts mainly on the politics pages, and an occasional "Ooooh!" on the Chicks with Guns forum!

And I can't stand when people post "bump!" "bumpity bump!" "Bumpilicious!" etc. just to get to 4,000 posts.

That's directed towards me. It's okay, I have a big mouth and can type as fast as a retired secretary (my mommy)! But I'm here to discuss guns and meet shooters all over the state, which I try to do. The forum has gotten waaaaay better since the switch and we've gotten rid of some trouble makers (matt6669).

POST WHORE!! :icon_e_biggrin:

Why didn't you just edit your post prior to this one and add to it?

Now, Now, Paul...Unless he's getting paid it SHOULD be "Post Slut" or "Post Bimbo" since he does it for the "Love of the Sport" :icon_mrgreen:

I'm pretty sure post whore works just fine as he is being paid in the form of having a higher post count and the higher the post count of someone the smarter and better looking they are, or something like that right? :icon_mrgreen:

Like any form this one has its core people this will change over time people will leave and new people will join the group that is life though. For me personally I know that the majority of my useless posts come after a few beers, well except this useless post no beers involved in this one.

my curiosity, I guess, came from the fact that I'm as new to forums as I am to firearms. It was the first thing I was interested enough in and curious enough about to actually get on a forum. Other guys have been on motorcycle/car forums and all that, so I guess are more familiar with the dynamic. Most of my useless posts come from sleep deprivation. :icon_eek:

I've been on forums of some form or another since 1984 during the days of Fidonet, often in a staff position. What always happens, and I mean, every single time is that there will be a small group that churns along until it grows past a certain point. There will then be a rift that forms and grows over time. Eventually Some folks will run off, start a new forum and take a chunk of the people with them. Some will people disappear forever, others will "ride it out" and the process starts over. It's always about control and direction the forum is going. It will happen at every forum you post to and eventually if the forum gets big enough, it shrugs off the fleas fairly regularly. If the forum gets big enough the folks that post there eventually realize that no matter how privileged they feel, they don't get to control the rudder.

These events are very disruptive and one thing I've learned is not to "talk people out of it". There may be a short term gain in peace, but it just means that the final explosion is going to be worse. It's just best to ban some bad apples and strike their name from the record. Yes, seriously. heh.

One of my other forums(I helped form it) is just such an offshoot. The reason we started the new forum was that the owner of the other place outed himself as LIHOP that hinted at MIHOP. Quite a few of us took issue with that.

It's just a dynamic that is always there. If you are aware of it, you can mitigate the damage before it becomes fatal. I believe that Maks did such a thing here. The cancer wasn't malignant yet.

what's that mean? pardon my ignorance...

not that I know any different, but I think Maks is doing a great job with this forum. I've gotten to like the changes. I don't think it's so huge yet as to cause rifts. and anyway, he's the "Intrepid Leader" and has the control. I think for any other forum member to think that they have anything other than an ability to input and give opinions, not the "control of the rudder" would be ... silly.

Let It Happen On Purpose regarding 9/11.

Made It Happen On Purpose.

The site was ostensibly about ufo/anomalies/conspiracies, that type of thing, but when the owner is selectively presenting or not presenting information which supported his LIHOP/MIHOP view, we were done with him.

We were all staff at the place too.

We didn't go out in a blaze and flood the forums or anything, we just left and started our own place. The one thing you must always remember is that whoever owns the forums owns the content. They are dictator. They can be benevolent or iron-fisted, but no matter what, they own the keys to the Kingdom. If I have a major ideological problem with the king, I leave the kingdom, there is no other logical recourse.

Maks owns this place. Good bad or otherwise, we exist here at his pleasure. My screen name exists in other forums, so if it were to become onerous to post here or if I was not wanted, I'll move on. Don't go away mad, just go away.

This forum is a bit of an anomaly for me. I'm a member of at least a dozen forums.. but I rarely post more than a handful of times per year. For whatever reason, when I first found this place I felt right at home... and once I started shooting somewhat regularly with some of the forum members that feeling was solidified.

That said, most of my posts are rambling gibberish... I get bored easily, and this place is largely an attempt to help pass the time while it's slow at work.
