Iran To Send Naval Vessels Off U.S. Territorial Limit

THIS is what happens when a country and its image, its reputation and its world standing is devalued by a clown and his entourage in the White House and the State Department.

We should wait until and if they stray a nautical mile within our limits and then send them to the bottom. This BS from these despotic regimes needs to stop and stop now.

Naw, just have a fleet close around them and board in international waters. Claim a navigational error. We can hold them hostage for 2 years and release them when we get payola, or they can rot. Either is acceptable.

And then start another senseless war? We park our naval ships on peoples front door all the time. This is no reason for an outrage if you ask me.

That's why they need to initiate jamming ahead of time. Then it's just a missing boat.

Well I am bringing my camera to work this time. Might be a little interesting since I work in international waters in the Gulf of Mexico.... heres an excerpt from the article.

"When we are in the Gulf of Mexico, we will establish direct contact with the United States," he was quoted as saying, according to AFP.

I read another article on this and it seems to be widely thought in the naval community that Iran doesn't have the resources to do this. They have no aircraft carriers or destroyers, and have nowhere to refuel and resupply once they reach the atlantic. The Iranian Navy could in theory resupply somewhere in south america that shares their dislike for this country, but it seems that the threat is empty as it stands right now.

Agreed that any Iranian naval presence in this hemisphere is nothing to worry about in a practical sense. Buuuuuttt, and I'm just spitballing here, imagine the propaganda value of a photo of the Iranian flag flying in the Gulf of Mexico or off the coast of Florida. They do have a handful of submarines, destroyers and frigates. In any confrontation with the USN, the Iranian navy would be toast Day 1, so why not get some real value out of them before that?

If we can assume that Iran is expecting a US/Israeli attack on their nuclear facilities, which would probably lead to another regional war over there, then having a few ships on hand over here would make more sense than leaving them in the Persian Gulf. At least over here they'd die on the offensive. I think that the last 32 years have shown us that these people have no problem with suicide missions, even an expensive one like this. And in the mean time they get to show the folks over in the ME that they can get in our face. It is a win-win for them, I think.

I agree that the propaganda value would be huge but with the tension right in their own region, I dont think it would be prudent to dedicate a large portion of their naval infrastructure for a photo op. I have an inkling feeling that this was someone mouth running a little bit too far, and writing a check their butts cant cash.

I can see where this can potentially cause issues. If Iranian ships are potentially threatening to enter our waters, our Navy is going to have to use resources to observe and prevent incursion. This takes away resources that can be used elsewhere. Alternately, we'd have to call up more reserves to man additional ships, and raise our overall readiness level.

That's an excellent point, there is a LOT of trouble stirring right in their backyard. But all that is coming from their own provocations or from their only natural predator -- US. If they had a local rival that could challenge them, then keeping their meager navy close would make sense. You're right, they probably will be conventional here and just keep everything close to home. But any non-ground assets they have are going to be useless in any confrontation with us. And they have a history with operating in South America in the form of sponsoring Hezbollah activity there (and in Mexico) and basing missiles in Venezuela. This would be a natural next step.

Being that it has taken them over 30 years to get to Syria I would guess it might take them another 30 to get to the Gulf of Mexico. There are also the logistics concerns the Iranians would have just to get the vessels close to the US. They have no capital ships with a frigate (same as a destroyer basically) their largest.

I'm not losing any sleep on this until they are on their way.

I don't think we would need additional personnel and resources to take care of anything the Iranians could get to the Gulf of Mexico. Many ways to track them and if needed a pair of F18s from NAS Boca Chica could deal with any threat.

I don't think the Iranian navy would stand much of a chance against even our coast guard!

That was my thought as well.

Our Coast Guard has the necessary weaponry to deal with them and eradicate them in my estimation. Plus if only half the CG's are as good a shot as RayRay, a CG alum, we have nothing to fear!!

So you take a bunch of naval vessels, put nukes them. Steam into international waters and sit there. After a while go flank speed at our shores, by the time this administration reacts and gets a plan together you are very close to shore. Light off the nuke and render our shipping fleets and ports inoprable. Discuss.

I don't think that would happen. The closer they get to our shores the closer they will be watched and when they are within a couple of hours of reaching our shores escorted 24/7. I can guarantee the rules of engagement for such a scenario are already in place.

Ok, I'll discuss.

What nukes? And we already have a plan.

Discussion over.

Iran is so full of propaganda and empty threats (that they know are empty) and just try and scare people. I cannot tell you how many times I've been flying up (or down) the Persian Gulf only to have Iran start yelling at us saying we are approaching their airspace and to identify ourselves blahblahblah only for the US navy to pretty much tell them we aren't and to shut up...in slightly different terminology.
