hiker88 22 Posted January 7, 2012 it's was a 7.62x39
tony357 386 Posted January 7, 2012 Not a good round to shoot at steel plates, especialy wolf or another imported military ammo since they are steel jacket possibly even the core.
hiker88 22 Posted January 7, 2012 I just couldn't resist. I was sighting in a scope for my AR. After doing that, I got out my Saiga and shot the plate with irons from 50 yds away. The 7.62 did give a louder ping I won't be doing that again.

tony357 386 Posted January 7, 2012 That will do it.. pick up some copper jacketed on sale put that plate out at 200 yds and have at it..
Krdshrk 3,878 Posted January 7, 2012 Really? Huh. I used Herter's 7.62x39 at futool's plates - no issues. Even 7.62x54R at 50 yards.
vladtepes 1,060 Posted January 7, 2012 I have shot steel with the same gun with missed results I think there is a variance in the plates I shoot.. some if can get through.. and other plates stop it..
tony357 386 Posted January 7, 2012 nick the herters may not be steel core it is russian though..
hiker88 22 Posted January 7, 2012 I might try some Herter's next time but will keep on buying Wolf. I just won't use them on my plates. Maybe an engine block next time lol

hiker88 22 Posted January 7, 2012 I have shot steel with the same gun with missed results I think there is a variance in the plates I shoot.. some if can get through.. and other plates stop it.. the hits on the center of the plate just cause a dimple. I think the two hits on the edge happened when the plate swung to one side and stayed there. i guess the edge was weak point.
hiker88 22 Posted January 7, 2012 hit the middle of the steel Rey! yeah, I know. I have "old eyes" and I suck shooting iron sights.
henrym 19 Posted January 7, 2012 Also could be how the plates were cut. Steel plates cut with a torch can be soft around the edged.
PK90 3,573 Posted January 7, 2012 Use frangible ammo. Did anyone see the new FPSRussia video where he shoots plates within a few inches?

henrym 19 Posted January 7, 2012 Old bridge does frangible steel inside in the winter. Its cool and you can buy the ammo at the match for a decent price.
NickC 23 Posted January 7, 2012 http://www.youtube.com/user/FPSRussia#p/u/0/6dxm_W3uNYw About 2 minutes in I shot fragile this morning at the indoor range. It was alot of fun. But that ammo DOES fly back at ya. I got hit more often then when we shoot outside. Granted we were alot closer.

Babaganoosh 192 Posted January 7, 2012 Also could be how the plates were cut. Steel plates cut with a torch can be soft around the edged. Was just about to say that. The heat weakens the steels hardness. Ar400 and Ar500 steel it best served by cutting with a water jet.
Vlad G 345 Posted January 8, 2012 Don't shoot steel with a rifle at 50yards or you will chew it up. Even AR500 with water cut edges from MGM, GT, and they other big guys will do that with rifle rounds at 50 yards. With normal ammo, and personally I haven't seen the steel jacketed stuff any more damage then normal jacketed ammo, through lots of matches both as a shooter and as an RO. Most targets are spec'ed for 100yards or more with rifle ammo.

hiker88 22 Posted January 8, 2012 Yeah, that too. I forgot to mention that you wanna move it out to 100 yards for rifles. thanks for the info guys... last time I brought it out to the 50 yd bay, my son and I were shooting 22 lr. I'll set it up at the 100 yd range next time for my AR.
alec.mc 180 Posted January 8, 2012 That plate looks pretty thin from the picture, is it 1/4" ? I've shot steel core ammo at my 1/2" ar500 plates at closer than 50 yards with no ill effect. It could also be the HAZ, like mentioned before ( heat affected zone ) when cut.
RecessedFilter 222 Posted January 8, 2012 What kind of steel is it? And how thick? That's probably the issue.

We've seen actual steel core AP stuff cut through steel like butter regardless of steel quality.
