Obama/Biden making statement on gun control NOW (12/19 noon)

Recommended Posts

This is a very limited and partial paraphrasing, was only able to listen to a couple of minutes. All typos are mine:

we know this is a complex issue

no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence

make mental health access as easy as access to a gun

actions must begin inside the home and inside the hearts

problem is complex is not an excuse for doing nothing

can't prevent every act of violence does not mean we can't steadily prevent violence or worst violence

vice president to lead cabinet and outside organizations to come up with a set of proposals by January that I will act on immediately

reforms, right now

Joe lead effort because he wrote 1994 crime enforcement bill which included assault weapons ban which was supported by former presidents including reagan

Majority of american support banning of military style assault weapons, support banning high capacity clips, support background checks

I urge congress to hold votes on this matters next year in a timely manner

Suggest this as a priority for BATF.

I believe the 2nd amendment guarantees and individual right to have arms. Across the country are regional differences, urban vs. rural. Vast majority of gun owners are responsible, buy them legally, use them safely, but I am also betting that the vast majority of responsible law abiding owners would agree than an unbalanced man shouldn't be able to get an assault weapon so easily.

Since Friday morning a police officer was gunned down in Memphis, two officersin Topkea, woman in las vegas casino, 3 people shot in Alabama hospital, 4 year old in a drive by in missouri, taken off life suport yesterday.

10K deaths per year, we can not accept this as routine. I will use all the powersof this office aimed at prventing more tragedies like this. We can't prevent them all, but that will not be an excuse not to try.

Ultimately if this effort is to succeed it will require the help of the american people.

It will take compromise and courage. Cooperation and common sense will prevail, we can make a sensible and intelligent way for the USA to be a safer place for our children to learn and grow.

I note that he mentioned continued deaths since the incident, but NO "succesful" defensive uses.

I'm sorry but I'm not seeing 'anti'. I'm seeing a politician, saying what he needs to satisfy the public. I'm no fan of the guy, but at least he didn't come out and just completely put the blame on firearms. His 'pro' comments towards law-abiding gun owners will have their own outcry in his own party.

Obama does make valid points in regards to mental health , and the gun show loophole. However, the fact that hes putting a very anti-gunner Biden in charge of this task worries me. The focus is going to lie entirely on assault weapons.

Biden is a hunter and owns Semi-auto Berettas.

So My fear would be another "assault weapons" ban, which really wouldn't make a difference in NJ since we have one (and so did Connecticut) or a magazine capacity ban. If Biden was smart, he would make the Capacity ban like NJ's or MA's and cap it at 15 or 17, so people with most handguns wouldn't be effected. Once people who don't have AR's breath a sigh of relief, there will be a lot less resistance to getting an AWB through.

Define "gun show loophole".

Define "gun show loophole".

When they say "gun show loophole" it means that you can do face to face transactions without an FFL being involved. It happens that a lot of this happens at gun shows, but it's also the way most of the transactions from this forum are done, as an example. I've bought and sold maybe 20+ firearms on this forum, and they were all transacted using the "gun show loophole."

That is inaccurate only in the sense that in a FTF for a handgun you still need a permit to purchase and a NICS is done there. If it is a long arm, you must have an NJFPID and in order to obtain that and retain it legally you have to pass NICS and not have been convicted of a prohibiting offense.

So, in NJ, we don't really have the loophole. The issue arises when in states that do not require FID or P2P also do not require NICS at point of sale in a face to face transaction.

That is how straw purchases are made. Either someone who is not prohibited buys firearms and resells them illegally. OR someone who may be prohibited does so FTF without a NICS and there is no scrutiny or trail.

No I know what it is (private sales) but I wanted iRace559 to define it. Trying to find out why some people have a problem with private sales. I've seen this discussed in other threads, but nobody has mentioned giving guns to your kids. Now, I know that NJ is different, because we don't have private sales without the government, but in other parts of the country, you can give your kids a gun as a gift and it becomes theirs when they are legal to possess it. Making all transfers go through an FFL or requiring a NICS check would affect those transactions too. Seems a bit extreme to me, especially since very few guns used in crimes are purchased through private FTF sales.

I .. a freedom loving gun owner have a problem with private sales because you lack the means to ensure you are not providing a prohibited person with a weapon.. you have no data to support how many guns used in crimes are obtained by FTF sales.. that is essentially untraceable....

I am NOT saying it is some huge issue... but how would you feel as a seller knowing that you actually sold a gun to a guy with a protection order against him... and he goes home and paints his walls with the blood of his family... that is an extreme exaggeration and can happen even with NICS.. but why not run it through a background check just to be safe... weed out the ones that are definitely a problem..

Well, duh, the fix is in already. DiFi and Lautenummy juuussstt happeeenn to have this bill all ready. You just have to pass it, to find out what's in it. Now where have I heard THAT before???

This is Obama/Holder's REVENGE opportunity against the NRA and all the gun owners, whether they voted for them or not. I would be 100% certain there will be NO sunset date, IT WILL BE PERMANENT IF PASSED.

The NRA/GOA/SAF/NSSF better get their brass knuckles on. I am printing out letters to my US rep, Smith who can be quite wishy washy on guns. Am also sending to Lautenmummy and Whorechaser Menendez, for all the good it will do--

I don't see that he'll come up with anything that's meaningful, given the deadline.

FTF sales are not liked by the government because they can't track guns. Plan and simple.

Wake up Vladtepes, the "loophole" isn't an issue since a minute number of those guns that are sold are actually used in crimes.
