9 pointsWhat’s wrong with you? Show me on then doll where the bad man hurt you. Not a single person in this thread said they thought it was correct to require mandatory training and qualifications prior to being awarded a CCW permit. However, this is where we are and this is the process we have in place. ”My brother in law is a cripple in a wheelchair” “What do all you macho guys say about that?” You sound like a jerk. Completely unnecessary and useless comment that will not win you friends or influence people. One of the most competent shooters I know is a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair after being shot in Fallujah. He trains constantly and has developed workarounds for all of his TTPs that you and I take for granted. I was in a CQB course with him in Ohio. He was an absolute stud and was always an asset.
-
6 pointsFirst, there should be no qualification shoot to exercise a constitutionally protected right. Now that I have that off my chest...Your brother in law should have a course of fire modified so that he can shoot it from his wheelchair. I don't know anything about his disabilities or if he's capable of handling a firearm safely. Assuming that he is, he is the poster child for why right to carry matters so much. It levels the playing field for someone who isn't able to physically defend themselves. If he wants to carry and can't find a place to qualify, contact me and I think I can help. I'm not interested in getting into the qualification game but I am an NRA instructor and I would be willing to meet you and your BIL to figure out a CoF that works for him and sign off on the paperwork - assuming he can demonstrate safe handling and can shoot some type of course so he has scores to submit.
-
5 pointsIf the instructor didn't give you any time to reload off the clock, he's not being reasonable. I'm assuming he was aware that you were running a 5-shot revolver? I would suggest not giving him any more money - there are lots of other options out there.

4 pointsI dont know this guy or this place I have found after 55 years, people that boast connections are usually impotent.... So many others have given good advice... A lot is in your head.... I was with a nypd guy (retired) who claimed a s&w 36 'chiefs' pistol was terrible gun and he couldn't hit anything with it.... I can hit 4" steel with it at CR.... Get some good working gear...practice...get your mind straight... be positive... practice... and if the connections guy has some snake oil..don't buy it.

3 pointsNo. You need to dry fire* your ass off! 10-15 minutes a day is all you need. You can improve your administrative handling of the firearm (draw and re-holstering, loading, presentation) by a million percent without ever firing a shot simply by dedicating a few minutes a week to dry fire. Then go to the range and confirm your progress (identify any sustains and needs improvements) with live fire. To get the most out of it, you need to take notes about what is and isn’t working and what skills need low round maintenance practice and what skills are going to require ammo intensive skill building improvements. Then, when you go to the range, you need to go with a plan on what skills you are maintaining, what skills you are working on, and what skills still need to be evaluated. If you just go and shoot, you are wasting ammo/money - which is OK too, if your goal is to just have fun - I have days where I just blast away turning money into noise. But, when I want to improve a particular skill, I plan and document. * Follow all appropriate safety measures when you are dry firing - most importantly no ammo in the room, and a backstop that will stop rounds.
-
3 pointsRespectfully, you sound like a jackass. Most (if not all) of the people who have posted in this thread have stated at one point or another that requiring a 'qualifier' for a Constitutional right is absurd. It's like requiring some kind of test to vote in the next election. With that said, the law of the land requires a qual. If you're going to take one it makes sense to prepare for it. That means understanding what the course of fire is at different locations, selecting the one that's right for you, and preparing for it. I would have your brother in law contact Gun For Hire. They seem to be the tip of the spear on most things concerning the current CCW process so I would expect they would do as much as they could within the current laws to accommodate someone with a disability.

2 pointsI like this one: https://www.amazon.com/01-100-09-Original-Emergency-Keychain-Seatbelt/dp/B01G6C18EC/ The window breaker is essentially a spring loaded center punch, so you don't need to have the room/ability to swing your arm to open it. The body pulls away from the cap. I zip-tie the cap to the interior grab handle on the driver's side. Don't have to worry about it flying out of reach in an accident.

2 pointsWell here's an ATF agent confronted as a potential perp. Wonder how he liked it?
-
2 pointsState police did not ask me for the receipt. They just said go get fingerprinted and gave me an instruction sheet for the CCN. They also said results will be sent directly to the station.

2 pointsPractice doesn't all have to be at the range. Revolvers are particularly well-suited for dry fire practice. You can load up some snap caps or spent cases and dry fire a LOT. Watch your front sight and if it is moving when the hammer drops, practice until that movement is almost eliminated. If you are jerking the trigger, it will be very obvious. With snap caps you can also practice your reloads until they are fluid. Lots of repetitions. Fiddle with the holster until it doesn't interfere with drawing or reholstering. Or replace it with a different one. Then practice your draw, a lot. Hundreds of repetitions isn't a lot. Start slow, focus on the mechanics of not sweeping your support hand and not getting your finger on the trigger prematurely when you come up on target, then start to focus on having the sights fairly well aligned by the time you come up on target, then focus on minimal movement of the sights as you squeeze the trigger. There are free downloadable shot timers for smart phones. Download one, set it to give a start beep after a random delay, and a stop beep after the par time that you set. After you get the basics down as described above, start doing them on the clock. Best of luck (though with more prep, you won't be depending on luck).

1 pointJust returned from NJSP, Hamilton, Mercer County. Trooper was nice enough, but clueless. And I couldn't see him. They have the glass tinted so dark it is basically one-way. I find that disrespectful to the public. I'm sure they would claim safety, but it's already bullet proof glass and the doors are locked 24x7, you cannot get into the lobby without being buzzed in. Once in the lobby, you have no place to go either. Years ago, the outer doors were unlocked and the glass, while tinted, allowed you to see the person you were speaking with. With that small rant over, on to the topic. He didn't know what I was supposed to turn in and went by what I told him. I did the 1.5" square passport photos. Side note: the passport photo software has an option for 40mmx40mm, 1.5" is just about 38mm. So I bought the 40mmx40mm and cut them out myself. The pdf on the NJSP website for instructions to apply and the application itself had a different format for the payee on the MO. I asked the Trooper which to put down, he said the one on the application. I don't think he knew he had to witness me sign the Mental Health form. He didn't know what proof of ID was required. I had already made a copy of BC and provided that. He looked at everything said, looks good, you'll get contacted if there's a problem. I said wait, I need info from you for fingerprinting. He said go to the website and schedule it. I said I need a code that identifies this Barracks and a case number. He asked another Trooper and all they knew to give me was the ORI number. Knew nothing else besides to tell me to call between 9-5 and ask for the Firearms Investigation Unit. I tried the ORI on the identego website, it rejected it. I went back inside and showed him just because. So now, I wait to call in the morning. In the grand scheme of things, it probably doesn't matter if I was able to book something today or tomorrow. Either way I figure I will need to travel to Pa for an appointment on Saturday. Possible benefit is I will find out a little bit more about the process when I call. Doubtful, but you never know.

1 pointWhen the NJSP instructions first came out, they did NOT have "passport" - only birth cert or naturalization cert. NJSP has since updated their instructions to include Passport. GFH still has old instructions. You are good to go with passport and DL.

1 pointSounds like a car salesman to me..... a good revolver and knowing how tonuse it will not fail you.... Move on from this guy.... I know where there is a nice Glock 26...if you need info ping me. I used to carry it, it's now my daughter's up in VT... she handles it quite well and I am sure you would too. However don't give up in that wheel gun....

1 pointAgree. I submitted my paperwork to local PD on July 25 and I have zero expectations that there will be a 'quick' turnaround. Honestly there's part of me that doesn't expect that the carry permit will be issued at all. I was going to go the "wait and see" route and submit at a future point when everything was worked out, but if there aren't enough people FORCING the PD's and courts to act, that 'future point' would never come, so I got things done early and put them in.

1 pointNo duty to inform. And no license plate or DL are NOT tied to NJ PTC as of now. If the line of questioning is around getting harassed for having NJ PTC, one should not worry about it for now. Since I started to drive, I was never asked to step out of the car at any traffic incident. Should that happen or other circumstances put me in situation where the firearm may be exposed, or show up or be searched, I am inclined to inform the cops ahead of time. In summary, I hope to use common sense in informing the cops about my carry.

1 pointDepends on the town. My town didn’t allow it and they needed me to enter a case # into the identgo website that was provided by the Local PD

-
1 pointRealistically we are atleast looking at 60 days (local PD) + 14 days (prosecutor) + 30 days (court) + whatever temper tantrums along the way = 3.5 months at the least. Some of us applied around Jul first week - so we are looking at mid to late October if they play just enough shenanigans.

1 pointDid you show him NJ State Sanctioned 5 shot revolver HQC from the NJ DCJ Firearms Instructor Handbook? That’s what I run my guys that shoot JFrame through during quals.
-
1 pointNone My pd told me when i went to hand in my second pistol qual that the njsp sent out a memo that one qualification is good for all of them. So i said. Here just take this anyway and add it to my package. Thats where im at
-
1 pointWho said he had to stand to qualify? I'm pretty sure if he showed up at GFH they would tell him to load up mags, and shoot the distances from his wheelchair.. In fact, did you or he contact anyone about accommodations? Or u just pissing in the wind?

1 pointYears ago I was in a steel competition. Township cop rolls up and see's a hundred people with handguns in holsters. He never even got out of his car. I was thinking he was the one out of place not us. Never thought we'd be able to step off the club property with a loaded handgun but here we are now. I'm split with carry options. In the country or woods open should be fine. On the streets in your neighborhood, well it will take a while for people to get used to the idea. I'd recommend concealed for now. If too many people freak out the legislature may write a bill stating no open carry which then as someone pointed out, can led to trouble with PD. If we remain a carry state then if your muzzle or grip butt pops out from under cover, PD can't harass you or worse. It's like an NRA sticker on your car. You're inviting someone to follow you home to see where some guns are for a future robbery. We should all be smart and carry discreet. My two cents.

1 pointGet a new holster, kydex IWB or OWB...try crossbreed holsters, it will make reholsetting a cinch..... and practice, your age should not be your liability, physical incapacities aside if they exist. We look forward to your report, and passing the qual. And as others have said...practice....shooting effectively is a perishable skill... I shoot probably twice a month, maybe more...and while I am getting my.paperwork together I am practicing...and practicing some more... not just for the qual, but for life. You CAN do this, but if you have in your mind you cannot, then you will not. Burn it into your mind that you can and will.do this, and practice....

1 pointDid qualification at Shooters today. It was.... different. $90 plus tax (plus plastic surcharge if you use one) gets you up to five guns. I don't think any of us needed to shoot more than one gun, since they were all bottom feeders. He did do the induced stress factor deal. Basically, you had to listen to commands, move your target, top off your mags, reload as required all while taking your shots. I would not say it was very rushed, but it was not slow paced either. There was one required tactical reload called for. That string was three shots, reload, six shots. Turned out at the start of that string I only had two rounds. So I did two, emergency reload then seven shots. I think I needed one other emergency reload. I'd top off and/or swap mags in between the shooting commands. More single and support hand only shooting than I expected, but they were at the shorter distances. Speaking of distances, he didn't call them out. He'd move one target and tell everyone to move theirs to that distance. Nothing crazy, 15 yards max, maybe? I was too focused on other things to care what the actual distance was. Biggest hassle was the shore traffic on 539. No regrets going there.

1 pointThis is total nonsense. 1) Police have to qualify with every gun they plan on carrying - both on and off duty. There is a “Significantly Similar” clause in the AG Directive, but a full-size pistol compared to a sub-compact one aren’t significantly similar. Maybe a G17 size to a G19 size would qualify, but not a G26. 2) A shorter barrel doesn’t make it harder to qualify or put you at any disadvantage. That’s all in your head and is completely a software issue and not a hardware one. The G26 is the most mechanically accurate pistol in the Glock 9mm lineup. I have shot a qual course with a Ruger Gen1 LCP .380 and scored 100%, repeatedly. The fundamentals are the fundamentals. 3) Also, there is no rule that says you can’t CCW a G17 if that’s your choice based on what you shoot the best. “Listen to your friend @Mr.Stu. He’s a cool dude.” /Zoolander

1 pointThe statutes say possession of a handgun without first obtaining a permit to carry a handgun is a crime. Possession of a rifle or shotgun with first obtaining an FPIC is a crime. Possession of a loaded rifle or shotgun is a crime. Note that for the last one there is no permit mentioned. You cannot possess a loaded long gun, full stop.
