RobCo 16 Posted April 11, 2021 Would you say that $75 for a transfer fee a bit excessive? I won't mention any specific shops names but someone I know recently purchased two lowers online and they were charged $75 transfer fee per lower. And is it common to charge a transfer fee for each? chocodove 65 Posted April 11, 2021 Seems excessive to me. Local shops around here are anywhere from $35-$50 transfer plus NICS and will discount if more than one transfer in a single transaction.
The_Matrix 105 Posted April 11, 2021 $75 seems like the new norm. My friend went to two different FFLs, and they both charged $75. The FFL knows you have no choice since no more Face to Face COE transactions thanks to the Murph. They got us by the balls.
Displaced Texan 11,748 Posted April 11, 2021 I sold a pistol to a forum member here recently and he used a FFL that’s local to both of us. On my recommendation. I bought several guns from this dealer, and his transfer fee was $45+ NICS. When we met to do the transfer, he had raised his fee to $85( I think). Plus NICS. I was pretty taken aback when I heard this....IMHO, way over the top. Buyer wasn’t happy either. (That reminds me, we still need to get together for a beer or three on me, @axeman_g). On one hand, I somewhat understand the FFL transfer fee being higher for a private sale. He’s not making any profit on the firearm sale. I get that...he’s got to keep the lights on. On principle though, wow....personally I think it’s a bit excessive.
Sniper 6,372 Posted April 11, 2021 I just used one of my permits to buy a pistol from an online supplier, and my local guy charged me $25 for the transfer and $15 for the NICS, for a total of $40.

Displaced Texan 11,748 Posted April 11, 2021 I don’t plan on buying any more firearms in NJ, so for me, it’s a self correcting problem.

I think we should name the ffls and their prices. Nothing wrong with helping forum members save money.
Krdshrk 3,877 Posted April 11, 2021 Where in NJ? North/South? I expect higher prices in Northeastern NJ closer to NYC... I always head over to Steve at Monmouth Arms. $35 Transfer + NICS and a discount on additional transfers.

Displaced Texan 11,748 Posted April 11, 2021 Always call an FFL and ask the price of a transfer first, especially if you’ve never used them before. Hell, even if you have used them before. They may have raised their price.
marlintag 223 Posted April 11, 2021 It's gouging and you do have to shop around. I recently paid 50 for a transfer which I thought was reasonable, I have paid 75 dollars in the past. There are still many FFL's in NJ that are reasonable on their rates.

Either they don't respond, or the guy I went to said his suppliers couldn't get what I wanted, and he told me order online and have it shipped to him. I'm purchasing more on Ebay these days not because I want to but because the products I want/need are not available locally, the prices are insane or they've substituted a lower quality item, or both. People are going to regret the demise of brick and mortar stores. When competition is eliminated selection goes down and prices go up.

PM this FFL please. 50 for a transfer is fine. But when you have multiples and there is a charge for every add-on. That is bad business!
Sota 1,191 Posted April 12, 2021 @remixer Steve @ Monmouth Arms is still my guy, if I ever get the scratch to buy anything.
winmag45 14 Posted April 12, 2021 Also a +++ for Steve at Monmouth Arms.If it is a new gun I will always see if Steve can get it before I go to Gun Joker. His prices are always fair.I would rather support my local dealer then save $15 going to Bud's. DirtyDigz 1,812 Posted April 12, 2021 Steve @ Monmouth is great, but he is stupid busy lately. Be ready for delayed responses and limited windows of availability/appointments required.
InFamous 311 Posted April 12, 2021 Hackettstown Firearms is my go to. $46 includes transfer, NICS, and tax. No appointments needed.
winmag45 14 Posted April 13, 2021 I know Steve is super busy,I've been telling him to get a secretary hahahha. I have a really crazy work schedule and he's always made time to take care of all my smoke wagon needs. That is why I use him exclusively.
