Has NJ decided to be like the rest of the country and use regular online NICS? Or are we going to still act as a "hub" (i.e. employ staff to run NICS for the FFL, no Sunday hours, etc)?

My educated guess would be that the same people at NJSP NICS Unit will get the info and do the check, which may take longer then normal.

Its only an Inline submission. Nics operators will still process the Nics and email the results.

 

So this means NO 24 hour nics, NO Sunday nics and who knows how well the email reply will work.

It appears the online system will only be a submission form. the leg work is still done by hand in the NICS unit.

this is not for us. they'll make it look like it is, but it isn't. it's just a way for them to make a more accurate database of who owns what. they will use a slow server. they will delay things when/where they can. it's bullchit.

Why would you say that? They dont know exactly what your buying when you run a nics. All they know is long gun or handgun.  I think its just an attempt to somewhat automate things a bit. Might work out fine but when i got the letter i was expecting something more then just a submission script.

I agree 100%. There will be no sense of urgency for them to do the check right away like when it is a phone in. We will be back to the same problem we had with faxing in checks. Website will crash on busy days like Saturdays and holidays. Can you imagine how hammered the system will get on Black Friday!!

So this replaces (eff 10/11/13) the fax submission system and also allows them to skinny down the number of bodies manning phones to handle verbal call-in submissions, making a new 'state-approved' (I wonder who got paid off??) vendor responsible for getting our private info from your local FFL to the NJSP (or directly into the FBI database) for NICS checks.

 

I smell a huge clusterf^ck in the works.

Was really hoping this would be a near instant check. When I bought my Ruger back in June, the check took a week. I was hoping to take ownership of an M&P 15 this weekend, so I may have to call my FFL tomorrow and get the ball rolling.

My wife had a check done Saturday, took about 5 minutes too.

I would recommend getting the M&P before this new and improved system is implemented--technology is great, but the state usually finds a way to screw it up.
